2 BOTTOM FISHING IN THE NOTTINGHAM STYLE.<br />

st<strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong> flam<strong>in</strong>g forge, or busy shuttle, <strong>and</strong> are slowly<br />

poisoned by <strong>the</strong> foul, smoke-polluted air, are glad to get away<br />

to <strong>the</strong> river side, <strong>and</strong> brea<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong> pure breath of heaven.<br />

These are <strong>the</strong> men who feel <strong>the</strong> bless<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> river side,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re is no wonder at it, after be<strong>in</strong>g " cab<strong>in</strong> 'd, cribb'd,<br />

conf<strong>in</strong>ed " <strong>in</strong> unhealthy workshops <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> heart of our large<br />

towns. These men see <strong>the</strong> beauty of <strong>the</strong> country <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

brief sojourn by <strong>the</strong> water side, where country-bred people<br />

would fail to observe it. Probably <strong>the</strong>y often wondered why<br />

<strong>the</strong> poet-priest wrote<br />

" Sweet fields beyond <strong>the</strong> swell<strong>in</strong>g flood<br />

Are clad <strong>in</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g green,"<br />

when <strong>the</strong>re are such beautiful fields, <strong>and</strong> sweet scenes <strong>in</strong> this<br />

vale of tears, without hav<strong>in</strong>g to cross <strong>the</strong> mysterious borderl<strong>and</strong><br />

to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m. What health <strong>and</strong> vigour aga<strong>in</strong> have <strong>the</strong>y<br />

not drawn <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong>ir lungs, arid how <strong>in</strong>vigorated do <strong>the</strong>y not<br />

feel ! <strong>and</strong><br />

how much better can <strong>the</strong>y not cope with <strong>the</strong> cares<br />

of <strong>the</strong> world, when <strong>the</strong>y go back to its duties after a day's<br />

<strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong> ! These are <strong>the</strong> men, I say, who feel <strong>the</strong> benefits of<br />

<strong>the</strong> water-side, <strong>and</strong> it is to <strong>the</strong>se thous<strong>and</strong>s of my fellow<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g-men anglers to whom I am more particularly writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

I am one of yourselves, only my l<strong>in</strong>es have been cast <strong>in</strong><br />

pleasant places, <strong>and</strong> a splendid river flows as it were past my<br />

door, so that I have had every facility for follow<strong>in</strong>g my<br />

favourite pastime, <strong>and</strong> I am will<strong>in</strong>g to convey a little of this<br />

it will be<br />

knowledge to my less fortunate brethren ; <strong>in</strong> fact,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own faults if <strong>the</strong>y do not know as much as I do after<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g me carefully through <strong>the</strong>se pages.<br />

Most works upon angl<strong>in</strong>g, I have heard, are noth<strong>in</strong>g but<br />

learned discussions on <strong>the</strong> natural history of <strong>the</strong> fish (which are<br />

all very well <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir way), <strong>and</strong> when our tyro has read <strong>the</strong>m<br />

carefully, he does not know <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> best way of tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

various fish. Moreover, most works upon angl<strong>in</strong>g, as I have<br />

before h<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> my preface, treat so fully of salmon, trout,<br />

<strong>and</strong> grayl<strong>in</strong>g, that <strong>the</strong>y don't do justice to <strong>the</strong> so-called<br />

coarse fish. Salmon, trout, <strong>and</strong> grayl<strong>in</strong>g are utterly beyond<br />

<strong>the</strong> reach of thous<strong>and</strong>s of our humbler anglers, so I shall<br />

content myself by only giv<strong>in</strong>g a short chapter on worm or<br />

bottom <strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong> for salmon, as it is practised on <strong>the</strong> Trent, <strong>in</strong>
