28 BOTTOM FISHING IN THE NOTTINGHAM STYLE.<br />

centre-p<strong>in</strong> reels, as just noticed, are splendid articles for <strong>the</strong><br />

Nott<strong>in</strong>gham style of <strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, <strong>and</strong> are generally made of <strong>the</strong><br />

very best <strong>and</strong> hardest well-seasoned walnut (<strong>the</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>dle does<br />

not come right through <strong>and</strong> is fastened outside with a nut,<br />

like <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary reel) <strong>the</strong> ; sp<strong>in</strong>dle itself is steel, <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong><br />

end it is reduced to nearly a po<strong>in</strong>t, which runs <strong>in</strong> a hole<br />

that is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre of <strong>the</strong> front plate, <strong>and</strong> is held <strong>in</strong> position<br />

by a strong spr<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

These very best centre-p<strong>in</strong> reels are ra<strong>the</strong>r expensive, a<br />

real good one cost<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g like fifteen shill<strong>in</strong>gs, while<br />

a good ord<strong>in</strong>ary one would only cost five ; however, if <strong>the</strong><br />

angler can afford a " centre-p<strong>in</strong>," by all means have one ;<br />

if he<br />

cannot, why, he will make very good shift with a first-class<br />

ord<strong>in</strong>ary one. These reels are admirably adapted for throw<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out a long l<strong>in</strong>e with only a very light float <strong>and</strong> tackle.<br />

I have been asked by several correspondents lately to send<br />

<strong>the</strong>m a description of <strong>the</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>gham reels, <strong>and</strong> how much<br />

<strong>the</strong>y differ <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir construction from <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary brass<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ches, because <strong>the</strong>y say I only just refer to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> my<br />

book, <strong>and</strong> do not fully describe <strong>the</strong>m. It would take up too<br />

much of my time to answer all <strong>the</strong>se communications by<br />

letter, so <strong>in</strong> this edition I will go more fully <strong>in</strong>to this question<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>gham reels. The ord<strong>in</strong>ary brass w<strong>in</strong>ches<br />

or reels are of no use for <strong>the</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>gham style of <strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong>,<br />

because <strong>the</strong>y do not revolve with anyth<strong>in</strong>g like sufficient<br />

freedom for cast<strong>in</strong>g out a bait, or <strong>in</strong> " traveller "<br />

<strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong> for<br />

chub down a swim. I have just h<strong>in</strong>ted that a reel with a<br />

solid cross-back to it is to be preferred, <strong>and</strong> perhaps it would<br />

be as well here to expla<strong>in</strong> why. The back of a Nott<strong>in</strong>gham<br />

reel is generally made of hard wood, ei<strong>the</strong>r walnut or<br />

mahogany, about half an <strong>in</strong>ch thick <strong>and</strong> this is hollowed<br />

;<br />

or recessed out about one-third of its thickness, so that it<br />

forms a rim round <strong>the</strong> edge (this rim is to act as a cover <strong>and</strong><br />

protection for <strong>the</strong> back edge or plate of <strong>the</strong> revolv<strong>in</strong>g portion<br />

of <strong>the</strong> reel). Now this wooden back be<strong>in</strong>g so th<strong>in</strong>, it is<br />

manifest that if it had no protection it would be liable to<br />

warp ; <strong>and</strong> if this did happen, <strong>in</strong>stead of <strong>the</strong> reel <strong>sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

round evenly <strong>and</strong> truly, it would be a nasty wobbl<strong>in</strong>g affair,<br />

<strong>and</strong> very disagreeable to use ; especially is this <strong>the</strong> case
