TKENT FISHING. 31<br />

v<strong>in</strong>ced most fully, that for <strong>the</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>gham style of general<br />

<strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, that comprises both float <strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>sp<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, this<br />

reel is worthless. In <strong>the</strong> last Fish<strong>in</strong>g Gazette tournament,<br />

those pleasant anglers' ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>gs that were <strong>in</strong>troduced<br />

<strong>in</strong>to this country by <strong>the</strong> worthy editor of <strong>the</strong> paper just<br />

mentioned (Mr. R. B. Marston 1<br />

this reel ), was allowed <strong>in</strong><br />

competition <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>gham style of cast<strong>in</strong>g but ; <strong>in</strong> my<br />

humble op<strong>in</strong>ion it ought not to have been so allowed, as it is<br />

more of a Thames style than a Trent ; but, however, that<br />

event proved that that reel had to put up with a third place,<br />

as regards <strong>the</strong> distance cast by <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary Thames <strong>and</strong><br />

Nott<strong>in</strong>gham styles. I do not know that I should have<br />

noticed this reel at such length, if <strong>the</strong>re had not been claimed<br />

for it <strong>the</strong> title of " Nott<strong>in</strong>gham style," <strong>and</strong> I am <strong>in</strong> duty<br />

bound, as giv<strong>in</strong>g a full description of that style, to notice most<br />

fully such an important article as <strong>the</strong> reel.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> fashion pursued by <strong>the</strong> Thames fishermen, <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

is drawn off <strong>the</strong> reel, <strong>and</strong> laid loosely <strong>in</strong> coils at his feet,<br />

unless he happens to be skilful enough to ga<strong>the</strong>r it up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

palm of <strong>the</strong> left h<strong>and</strong> as some do. Suppose <strong>the</strong> angler to be<br />

<strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong> from a reed bed, or an osier holt, <strong>and</strong> his l<strong>in</strong>e to be<br />

coiled at his feet, it would be constantly catch<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> twigs,<br />

or pieces of rubbish, <strong>and</strong> a tangle at <strong>the</strong> r<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong> rod<br />

would be <strong>in</strong>evitable at every cast. If we add to this <strong>the</strong><br />

fact that <strong>the</strong> Nott<strong>in</strong>gham style requires <strong>the</strong> very f<strong>in</strong>est <strong>and</strong><br />

lightest of silk runn<strong>in</strong>g-l<strong>in</strong>es, made of what is called Derby<br />

twist, <strong>and</strong> scarcely thicker than cotton, it is manifest that if<br />

it were laid <strong>in</strong> coils or ga<strong>the</strong>red <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> palm of <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>, it<br />

would tangle up <strong>in</strong>to <strong>in</strong>extricable knots. Hence my reader<br />

will see it is necessary that <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e should be able to run off<br />

<strong>the</strong> reel with <strong>the</strong> greatest freedom, <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong>re should be<br />

a m<strong>in</strong>imum of friction. Indeed, it not unfrequently happens,<br />

when throw<strong>in</strong>g out a long l<strong>in</strong>e, or a heavy tackle, that <strong>the</strong><br />

reel runs with too great a freedom. It sp<strong>in</strong>s round quicker<br />

than <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e can run through <strong>the</strong> r<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>and</strong> if this happens,<br />

a sad tangle will be <strong>the</strong> result. This difficulty can easily be<br />

1 Mr. Malloch's reel is very useful to those anglers who cannot cast<br />

from <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary Nott<strong>in</strong>gham reel. It answers admirably for pike<br />

<strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong>, ledger<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> bottom <strong>fish<strong>in</strong>g</strong> for salmon, E. B. Marston.
