<strong>the</strong> Esocidse family, to which belongs <strong>the</strong> pike; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Cypr<strong>in</strong>idaB, or carp family, to which belong <strong>the</strong> carp, <strong>the</strong><br />

barbel, <strong>the</strong> chub, <strong>the</strong> roach, <strong>the</strong> dace, <strong>the</strong> tench, <strong>the</strong> bream,<br />

<strong>the</strong> gudgeon, <strong>the</strong> bleak, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>now.<br />

The structure of fish <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir animal organization present<br />

endless subjects of <strong>in</strong>terest ; though <strong>the</strong>y live <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> water,<br />

yet air is as necessary for <strong>the</strong>m as it is for mank<strong>in</strong>d. Says<br />

one writer, "Just as our warm red blood is purified <strong>and</strong><br />

restored to its vital <strong>and</strong> arterial qualities by air pass<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through our lungs, so is <strong>the</strong> cold red blood of fish by pass<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through <strong>the</strong>ir gills <strong>and</strong> as ; by <strong>the</strong> process of breath<strong>in</strong>g we<br />

extract <strong>the</strong> oxygen <strong>and</strong> so vitiate <strong>the</strong> air, <strong>in</strong> like manner do<br />

extract from it <strong>the</strong><br />

fish, tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> water <strong>in</strong> at <strong>the</strong>ir mouths,<br />

air held <strong>in</strong> suspension, <strong>and</strong> pass it out under <strong>the</strong> gill-covers<br />

<strong>in</strong> a vitiated state. A man submerged <strong>in</strong> water cannot extract<br />

air enough from it a fish ; submerged <strong>in</strong> distilled water,<br />

which is water m<strong>in</strong>us air, can get none at all, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> result<br />

is <strong>the</strong> same <strong>in</strong> both cases <strong>and</strong> as most ; anglers know, or<br />

should know, a fish drawn down stream is simply drowned,<br />

because <strong>the</strong> water is thus prevented enter<strong>in</strong>g its mouth <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> usual way <strong>and</strong> escap<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> gill-covers." This<br />

is <strong>the</strong> reason <strong>the</strong>n, I should suppose, that fish mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

way down stream for any distance travel tail first. How<br />

admirably, too, are fish formed <strong>the</strong>ir elongate, smooth bodies<br />

suit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m exactly to <strong>the</strong> element <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y live <strong>and</strong><br />

;<br />

observe <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>s, how well <strong>the</strong>y are suited for <strong>the</strong>ir various<br />

purposes.<br />

I will just describe <strong>the</strong>se f<strong>in</strong>s, for an angler, or would-be<br />

angler, ought to know at least <strong>the</strong>ir names : <strong>the</strong>re are <strong>the</strong><br />

two pectoral, or breast f<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> ; dorsal, or back f<strong>in</strong>s (some<br />

fish have one <strong>and</strong> some two back f<strong>in</strong>s) <strong>the</strong> ; ventral, or belly<br />

f<strong>in</strong>s; <strong>the</strong> anal f<strong>in</strong>, situated between <strong>the</strong> belly f<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

tail ; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> caudal f<strong>in</strong>, that is <strong>the</strong> tail itself. These f<strong>in</strong>s<br />

give <strong>the</strong> fish <strong>the</strong>ir different movements <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> water; <strong>the</strong><br />

caudal f<strong>in</strong> gives <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>ir chief means of gett<strong>in</strong>g along ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> dorsal <strong>and</strong> anal f<strong>in</strong>s effect <strong>the</strong>ir lateral movements ; <strong>the</strong><br />

pectoral f<strong>in</strong>s promote <strong>the</strong>ir elevation <strong>and</strong> depression, while<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir suspension <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> water is caused by <strong>the</strong> ventral f<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

Perhaps I ought also to say that <strong>the</strong> air bladder, which is
