DEAR AMY: I have been<br />
dating “Steve” for more than six<br />
weeks, and things are going great.<br />
I love him very much. He has told<br />
me that he loves me too.<br />
I met him two years ago<br />
when he was going through his<br />
divorce with his first wife.<br />
Last night, Steve introduced<br />
me to his friends. Over the course<br />
of the evening, we had a lot of<br />
beers and had a blast. One of his<br />
best friends, “Chris,” told me that<br />
I was the best thing that ever happened<br />
to Steve.<br />
Then I committed a terrible<br />
faux pas. I said, “Yes, I feel the<br />
same way. Chris — I mean<br />
STEVE — is the only man I want<br />
to be with!”<br />
Chris laughed it off, but I was<br />
mortified. I stopped drinking for<br />
the rest of the night, but I feel so<br />
horrible. I feel as though I<br />
betrayed Steve, and I wonder if I<br />
should tell him about this.<br />
Steve has been through a<br />
rough divorce. His ex-wife cheated<br />
on him.<br />

doesn’t think anything or say anything<br />

DEAR SLEEPLESS: Clearly,<br />
this has been a very dramatic<br />
event for you.<br />
So let me put things into perspective.<br />
A terrible faux pas worthy of<br />
explanations, confessions and<br />
sleepless nights is waking up next<br />
to Steve and calling him Chris.<br />
What happened to you is<br />
akin to the time I raised my hand<br />
to answer a question in 10th-grade<br />
history and eagerly addressed my<br />
teacher, Mr. Lange as “Grandma.”<br />
Forget it. Very likely, everybody<br />
else who was present at the<br />
time already has.<br />
DEAR AMY: Although my<br />
friend of 60 years and I live 200<br />
miles apart, we talk several times a<br />
week on the phone.<br />
One day, I phoned her, and<br />
her call waiting “beeped.” She<br />
took the other call, and after 10<br />
minutes of waiting on the phone<br />
and her not coming back to our<br />
call, I hung up. More time elapsed,<br />
and she phoned back saying that<br />
it was a call that she had to take.<br />
I asked why she didn’t come<br />
back to me and tell me that it was<br />
an important call. She told me<br />
that she was speaking to a professional<br />
and that she would never<br />
do that to a professional person.<br />
Then she asked if I would put a<br />
physician or professional person<br />
on hold, and I said that I would. I<br />
