HAMILTON COUNTY HERALD Friday, March 2, 2007 19 Hodes Continued from page 9 “But I could also see what was happening,” said Hodes. “And everything moved forward from there pretty quickly.” As an active member of the Jewish community, Hodes built his client base from there. “There are different ways to get started in real estate,” he said. “Marketing to people you know takes the longest because they know you’re brand new. If you’d met me at an open house you may not know that I got my license yesterday. So it took a little while, but it’s golden business as it goes forward.” After 3 1/2 years at RealtyCenter, Hodes saw an opportunity to get in on the ground level as an investor when Keller Williams moved to town. “It was just a right match for me—where our company is run by the agents, not by an owner who doesn’t sell real estate, and who doesn’t realize what we do day in and day our,” said Hodes. Keller Williams also provided an atmosphere that encouraged team building, which Hodes has taken advantage of. He now works with two other agents, a full-time administrator and a director of logistics. “It’s a waste of my time to deliver fliers to a house,” he said. “You don’t need me to do it. You need me to get in front of other people. Our director of logistics can go take pictures, can go deliver fliers, can go to the bank and do things that we don’t need to be doing. We need to be getting in front of people and sell- The National Association of Realtors®, underscoring its mission to make home ownership viable for all Americans, made a $1 million contribution to the Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation. The presentation, made at the U.S. Capitol today, emphasized the conclusion of Black History Month. Johnson, Sr., ing real estate.” While Hodes acknowledges that building the team has been a big investment of time and money for all involved, he sees a big payoff in the future. “The idea is that as time goes on, not only will I have a better life, but we’ll all have a better life because we’re not working seven days a week, 24 hours a day,” he said. “We can all have weekends off, we can all have nights off. And we can all still make good livings, but most importantly we can have a better life.” And it’s already getting better. “Growing my business has been difficult on my family,” said Hodes. “But the last year when I started my team, I had a better family life and more quality time with my family than I’ve ever had before.” His family includes his wife Melody and two sons, 5-year-old Micah and 17-month-old Jonah. “I want to be with my kids, I want to take them places,” said Hodes. “I don’t want to be a slave to real estate.” That is why one of his goals is to be able to take off two months a year—a goal that he hopes to accomplish within the next five years. Having his team together is the first step toward reaching that goal. “When I was away last week, things were hopping in here,” he said. “Whereas if it was just me, I would have been on the phone all the time, han- president of the MLK National Memorial Foundation. “NAR is an outspoken advocate for fair housing, an ally in the fight against predatory lending practices, and an organization that prides itself on building communities,” said Combs. “We are proud to be a part of the effort to build a permanent home to honor Dr. King on our National Mall.” NAR led industry efforts in 1988 to get important amendments made to enhance fair housing laws in the Fair Housing Act. In addition, NAR expanded and implemented fair housing education requirements for its dling stuff. I got to go to a conference and I got to learn and not really worry about what was happening here. Sure, we spoke a couple of times a day just to make sure everything was going in the right direction. But as time goes on that’ll be less and less. “It’s very important for me to provide a very high level of service to our clients, to provide expertise that’s unparalleled in Chattanooga. We all understand every word of the purchase and sell agreement in real estate. We understand it, we understand how to explain it, and we understand how to work it, so our clients are well protected and the level of service we deliver as a team parallels and exceeds the level of service that I was able to deliver as a solo practitioner. “So I want a better life, but I also want my customers to get an even better level of service as a result of what I’ve put together,” said Hodes. In addition to his real estate business, Hodes continues to teach at least one class a year at UTC. He also teaches prelicensing courses and has an Ask Andy class at Keller Williams for new agents. Hodes is also active with the Tennessee Association of Realtors and the Chattanooga Association of Realtors. He serves on the board of directors and on a task force promoting the image of Realtors in the Chattanooga area. members and has continued to educate Realtors® on the importance of inclusive housing practices and the promotion of minority homeownership through a unique training program, At Home with Diversity. To further remove barriers to minority homeownership and focus public attention on this vital issue, NAR, along with a group of minority real estate organizations, implemented the HOPE (Home Ownership Participation for Everyone) Awards to recognize outstanding projects and programs that increase minority homeownership, revitalize communities and expand affordable housing SSubscribe u b s c r i b e ttoday o d a y ! !!! ! ! “I don’t think a lot of consumers understand the difference between a real estate agent and a Realtor,” said Hodes. “A Realtor has a real estate license, just like a real estate agent. But a Realtor has joined the National Association of Realtors and has agreed to ascribe to and be held accountable for the code of ethics of the National Association of Realtors, which far exceeds the laws of the states of Tennessee and Georgia.” According to Hodes, there are 14-17,000 real estate agents in Tennessee who are not Realtors. As president of the Friends of East Brainerd, a communitybased organization of businesses and residents, Hodes helps implement the Hamilton Place Community Plan. “That’s the communitygrowth plan of how the Hamilton Place area is going to grow, where homes go and where business go,” he said. “We monitor that and we advocate for a balance of residential and commercial interests in the Hamilton Place area. We also advocate for parks and public space. East Brainerd has only one park, and that opened only three years ago.” In addition to making the area more pedestrian friendly with the addition of sidewalks on busy streets, the organization recently planted the exit ramps at Interstate-75 and Shallowford Road with trees and flowering shrubs. It hopes to be able to do opportunities. “We see our contribution to Dr. King’s memorial as a natural extension of our ongoing efforts and commitment,” said Combs. “I am proud that the National Association of Realtors® has joined our family of major donors which are making history by building a lasting memorial to Martin Luther King, Jr. on the National Mall in Washington,” said Harry E. Johnson, Sr., president and CEO of the foundation. “Having the financial commitment from the Realtors® is very important to our efforts, but having their every day commitment to enable people to live their dream is cru- • • • $15 for one year • • • the same beautification on the entrance ramps soon, once funding has been raised. “When you come down I-75 and you pass Shallowford Road—and there’s some huge number of cars that do that every day—but all these people drive by, and don’t even know they’re entering Chattanooga,” said Hodes. “It’s our welcoming mat from the north. If they stay on I- 75, they’re not going to see the downtown, they’re just going to drive by this big mall.” In his spare time, Hodes loves to read—mainly books to improve himself—traveling, and cooking. “I love to eat, but I’m trying to do less of that these days,” he quipped. “I love having people over for dinner and being out in the community, socializing.” But his favorite pastime is his family. “My 5-year-old is my best friend,” said Hode. “He’s fun, he’s cute, he’s wonderful. I just can’t spend enough time with him and doing things with him.
