A
number of incidents, particularly in climbing gyms,
have resulted in climber ground-falls. Analysis shows
that there is a risk of ground-fall when clipping until
the fourth draw. Several factors may increase the risk of a
ground-fall:
• the length of rope out from the last clipped bolt
• the slack taken for clipping, particularly when clipping
with a fully extended arm
• the rope stretch
In addition, there are causes directly linked to belaying:
• the rope running through the system before jamming if
the belay technique is incorrect
• too much slack given by the belayer
• the movement of the belayer if he is surprised and/or too
far from the wall before the fall
By following the recommendations below, the belayer will
increase
the safety of the climber:
• remain attentive in order to anticipate any situation
• choose a good position at the base of the route
• manipulate the belay advice appropriately
