By Mike Howes On a bright day in September, 12 members of the Probus Club of Chipping Norton visited 47 Squadron based at Brize Norton. This was organized by one of our members, Air Commodore Peter Merriman, who was the Squadron Commander of 47 Sqn 60 years ago when it was based at RAF Abingdon. 47 Squadron and the Hercules Force have been on deployment in Iraq since 2001, and in Afghanistan, where they still remain aconstantpresencesupportingUKtroopswithvital tasks and resupply. 47 Squadron also provide a constant standby of two crews and two aircraft 365 days of the year at Brize Norton. This is part of the UK Search and Rescue requirement, covering any situation which requires the need of UK Special Forces Worldwide. We had presentations by the officer commanding 47 Sqn and others from those on the Hercules aircraft, reminding us that part of the training requirement allows them to fly at low level to avoid enemy radar which (to name one example) was used operationally on the extraction of British Nationals from the recent Libya conflict. We had a hands-on opportunity to climb in and feel what it would be like to be flown out to Afghanistan on the RAF C-130 Hercules (sad to say there was no time for an actual flight). One should not complain when you fly with a budget airline when you consider the conditions for the aircrew and the passengers sat down the back of these for 6 to 10 hour flights, with no gin and tonics and what can only be described as a glorified bucket for a toilet. Peter was also responsible for setting up JATE, now known as JADTEU (Joint Air Evaluation and Test Evaluation Unit) also based at Brize Norton. JADTEU has a range of duties involving the setting up, rules and regulations covering the safe conduct airborne dispatch of equipment from a variety of different aircraft types to any theatre in the world, including Afghanistan, Libya and the South Atlantic. It also measures, monitors and checks the vast range of equipment the RAF transport fleet has for different roles for safe carriage worldwide. We had explanations on how the parachute teams work across a range of altitudes, from high altitude para jumps requiring oxygen to low level exit without any reserve chutes, with men carrying all sorts of equipment from search dogs to fully inflatable RIB speed boats. We learned that parachutists have an extra £3 per day when testing parachutes, falling 58 from some 30,00 feet at circa 200 mph in free fall before opening the main chute, then discarding it and relying on the reserve for the final landing to terra firma!! There was a brief on how the Chinook Helicopters, one of the workhorses of the air force, form an integral part of the chain, testing equipment to make sure it will withstand being manhandled and dropped in a range of climates and conditions, as well a range of other services and duties performed by the Squadron. The whole team includes flight personnel, fitters, engineers, administrators etc., etc. to keep the JADTEU on schedule. IampleasedtoreportthatAirCommanderPeterMerriman,whoinhis time was an advanced flying Instructor, gave all the presenters, including Flt Lt C Lofthouse who was our guide and mentor, A*s for their clarity and response to his in depth and detailed oral questions. A great time was had by all and should not have been missed.
