PLAYING on the greens The lake region boasts six courses that are open to the public and one private club. And while the weather in northeastern Oklahoma is fairly moderate, the season to golf is as long as some of the fairways. Golfers play all twelve months at Grand Lake. PUBLIC COURSES Cherokee Grove Golf Club With doglegs, uphill, downhill and side hill trees, this 9-hole course will challenge even the seasoned golfer. New greens should be in great shape for 2007. This course is located on the arm of Carey Bay in Grove and is open daily during the season. Moderate green fees, carts, pro shop, snack bar, driving range and putting green will have you visiting this course on a regular basis. Grove 918-786-9852 Grand Cherokee Golf Course Set against the backdrop of the Pensacola Dam, this challenging 9hole course places an emphasis on accuracy with bent grass greens and well-placed bunkers. Tree-lined fairways and Bermuda grass tees with 3133 total yards, make this par 36 course fun as well as challenging. This is an Oklahoma State Park course and offers a pro shop, seasonal grill with patio and inside seating. This course was designed to allow all levels of golfers to enjoy the game. With bent grass greens and beautiful views of Grand Lake from almost half of the holes, you will find this golf club to be an experience not easily forgotten. Pro shop with pro on staff, first rate practice facility that includes a driving range, a chipping green with two sand traps, a large putting green and weather protected hitting area for lessons in inclement weather. A pro shop with pro on staff, driving range, putting and chipping greens as well as a snack bar round out course amenities. STATE PARKS around the lake Honey Creek State Park Situated on a hillside area overlooking Grand Lake on 30 acres down State Park Road, off US Highway 59S. The Park offers RV sites with water and electric hookups, tent camping, picnic area with cooking grills, and two group picnic pavilions that can accommodate 100 to 150 guests. A courtesy fishing dock and 4 stall courtesy boat dock is also available. An outdoor swimming pool is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The park offers a children’s play area with playground equipment and a 2 mile walking path. Grove 918-786-9447 Bernice State Park Gradually sloping to pebble beaches and shallow waters makes this Park a favorite spot for swimmers and sun worshippers. Houses the only 3,000 square-foot nature center along the 1,300 miles of Grand Lake shoreline. Park facilities include camping sites for the RV and tent camper. A group picnic shelter will accommodate up to 200 persons equipped with electricity, water and a cookout grill. Two lighted boat ramps and a low water fishing bridge located just west of the park. A hiking trail, naturalist activities and nature programs are offered. The park is 88 acres in size, with recreational facilities on approximately 15 acres, located one-half mile east of Bernice on SH 85A. Bernice 918-786-9447 Cherokee State Park Located just below the Grand River Pensacola Dam east of Langley to River Road, then one mile south, this Park sits on 187 acres. A nine-hole golf course, the Grand Cherokee Golf Course is an added activity available here. The park includes semi-modern sites for RV camping as well as tent camping, day-use picnic areas, a swim area and marina as well as 3 group picnic pavilions with electric and water that will each accommodate 150. Langley 918-435-8066/Camping 918-435-8727/Pro Shop Disney/Little Blue State Park This 32 acre Park is located two blocks east of Disney on SH 28, between the floodgates of the Grand River Pensacola Dam. The Park has a boat ramp, 80 campsites some with electric and water and others that are primitive. There are picnic areas and a playground as well as a sheltered picnic area. Disney 918-435-8066 Twin Bridges State Park At the north end of Grand Lake, this 63acre Park has both semimodern and primitive camping along with an RV dump station. There are picnic shelters, grills, restrooms with showers and a playground. There is a swimming beach with a bathhouse as well as a fishing dock and boat ramps. Bernice Nature Center Completed in 2006 this 3,000 square-foot facility is destined to become one of the “must see” places along the shores of Grand Lake. Live exhibits of native creatures, a view inside an active beehive and a 1,000 gallon aquarium filled with local fish are just a few of the highlights which can be found inside. There is a full-time Park Naturalist on-duty along with classroom facilities. Tours are available by calling ahead. Contact the Bernice Nature Center at 918-257-8330. Explore the Bernice Wildlife Refuge Nature Trail Walk along the onehalf mile paved trail or venture on the primitive trails that wind through woodlands, across two creeks, along meadow land and out onto the shoreline of Grand Lake. Climb the observation tower over looking the lake to watch a variety of water fowl bathe in the sun along a quiet beach. While walking the trail, keep an eye open for animal tracks. You might even surprise deer as they stop to enjoy the plum, persimmon and honey–suckle thickets. Fox, coyote, beaver, as well as other critters call the area home.
