YOU CAN’T CONTROL
THE MARKET
BUT YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR DECISIONS.
Sometimes the market reacts poorly to changes in the economy. But just
because the market reacts doesn’t mean you should. Still, if current events
are making you feel uncertain about your finances, you should schedule a
complimentary portfolio review. That way, you can help make sure you’re
in control of where you want to go and how you’ll potentially get there.
MAKING SENSE OF INVESTING
Emergency Services Capt. Chad
Arp urges all parents to have their
child’s safety seat inspected.
“It’s the responsibility of every
single parent and caregiver to
make sure their children are safely
restrained—every trip, every
time,” said Arp, who is also the coordinator
of Safe Kids Cherokee
County. “We are urging everyone
to get their child safety seats inspected.
When it comes to the safety
of a child, there is no room for
mistakes.”
As part of National Child Passenger
Safety Week, public safety
officials encourage parents to ensure
their child’s safety seats are
installed properly.
The National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration research
shows that 8,325 children younger
than five years old have been saved
by using properly installed safety
restraints over the past 30 years.
More than 400 lives of children under
the age of five were saved in
2006.
Children of different ages,
weights and heights require different
safety seat measures. Arp
suggests parents using the following
guidelines to decide how their
child should be properly restrained
in a motor vehicle:
■ Keep infants in a back seat,
rear-facing safety seat as long as
possible. Public safety officials
and car seat manufacturers recommend
keeping children in that
type of seat until age 1 and 20
pounds unless he or she reaches a
height or weight that exceeds the
limit for the particular seat, Arp
said.
■ Children who outgrow rearfacing
seats, should be moved to a
forward-facing seat, still in the
back seat, until they reach the
height or weight limit for the seat,
as recommended by the seat’s
manufacturer, which is usually
age 4 or 40 to 80 pounds.
■ Older children who outgrow
their forward-facing seat should
begin using booster seats in a back
seat until the seat belt in the vehicle
fits properly. Parents can tell
when the seat belt fits properly
when the lap belt lays across the
child’s upper thighs and the shoulder
belt rests on the shoulder or
collarbone. This usually happens
when the child is between 8 and 12
years old and is about 4-feet, 9inches
tall and weighs between 80
and 100 pounds.
Children should always sit in
the back seat to minimize risk of
injury from air bags.
Safe Kids Cherokee County is a
nonprofit organization that works
to prevent accidental childhood
injury, the number one cause of
death for children ages 2-14. Members
the Woodstock Police Department,
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,
The Hope Center, Safety
Town, as well as private individuals
and local area businesses.
It was founded in 1991 and has
and Emergency Services since
2003.
