Lightning fire destroys home
TIM CAVENDER | SPECIAL
The Sept. 8 storms that passed through Cherokee County caused several
public safety incidents. Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services
responded to a fire (pictured) at about 5:45 p.m. near Interstate
75 and Ga. 92 in the southwest part of the county. Residents told fire
officials that there was heavy lightning in the area. The one-story
home was abandoned at the time of the fire and was fully involved
when firefighters arrived, said Tim Cavender, director of public affairs
for Fire-ES. The house was destroyed. Another call came in 10 minutes
later regarding a structure fire in Towne Lake. The fire was extinguished
before it could cause extensive damage. Fire officials believe
lightning caused both fires, Cavender said. There also were calls about
fallen trees and downed power lines due to the storm.
attempted to return the
same items at the Home Depot
on Sandy Plains Road.
The complainant said the suspects
entered the store and
took two Makita combo kits,
two deadbolt locks, two lock
sets and two door closers and
put them into the cart. One of
the suspects walked to the outside
garden and hid one of each
of the items among the plants,
the report said. The same suspect
went to the register and
paid for the items left in the
cart and the other suspect left
the store. The suspect who paid
for the items gave the receipt
to the second suspect, and he
went back inside the store and
took the items hidden in the
plants, the report said. One of
the items was returned with a
receipt for cash at the Sandy
Plains store, and another item
was returned without a receipt
for store credit, the report said.
The other items were not returned
at the time of the report.
The items involved total
more than $900.
■ Canton police arrested a
woman Sept. 4 after she allegedly
stole more than
$700 worth of merchandise
from Belk on Riverstone
Parkway. The loss prevention
officer told police the suspect
took bags from behind a register
and placed items into the
bags, the report said. The loss
prevention officer stopped the
woman before she could leave
the store. The loss prevention
officer told police the woman
attempted to steal $751 in
clothes, jewelry and other merchandise.
Stephanie Darlene
Jones, 39, of East Ellijay, was arrested
and charged with felony
theft by shoplifting, the report
said.
■ Cherokee County sheriff’s
deputies responded to a burglary
Sept. 6 on Chesnut
Walk in Canton. The homeowner
said someone entered
his home and took two Microsoft
XBox gaming consoles
and a 37-inch flat screen TV, the
report said. He told police that
the suspect could have entered
the home through the front
door or rear basement door,
which apparently are easy to access
even if locked, the report
said. There also were two notebook
computers, XBox games
and movies that were not
stolen from the residence, the
report said. The estimated value
of the items taken is about
$1,000.
