Over 60 years ago, Mr. Bachofen opened an agricultural
machinery business in his father‘s rabbit shed. This same business
is now a technology company with a staff numerous more
than 100, modern premises and production facilities and a
worldwide distribution network.
BMB is known today as a leading manufacturer of highperformance
converting machines.
The production facilities at Bülach have supplied more than
1000 systems for master coating, coating, laminating, varnishing
and waxing of paper, board, plastic film and aluminium
foil.
BMB benefits from a team of highly motivated and technically
instructed staff who can think and act „quality“ at each stage
of the process; they are the foundation of its reputation as
first-rate mechanical engineers.

The converting systems produced by Bachofen + Meier AG are
known worldwide for their quality and durability. For more
than of 60 years, BMB has successfully produced and delivered
systems that meet the diverse needs of its customers.
Backed by many years in the industry, BMB today supplies
a broad range of equipment - from individual machines to
complete, turnkey production systems - acting as either project
leader or main contractor. It can deliver whatever is required
for individual production processes including coating mix

TECHNICUM R&D CENTER - for product
development and process improvement
The R&D Center is where new ideas and processes are tested
and developed to production standard. The test system is the
global leader, allowing as it does production-scale tests under
realistic operating conditions.
The integrated process control system provides immediate and
objective test reports. Tests and trial production runs provide
customers with the required certainty before opting for a
specific system.
The R&D Center is a fundamental element of our service
concept: In addition to the ability to test new and improved
materials (paper, film, foil) and check whether formulations are
compatible with the machines, it can also be used for the
training of future operators and specialists even before the
delivery of a new BMB system.
BMB is your contact at each stage in the process: for advice
prior to purchase, the supply itself, commissioning and a comprehensive
after-sales service.

ADHESA - economic systems for adhesive labels
The market for adhesive labels is a high growth area. The
adhesives are either solvent-based or more environmentally
friendly aqueous and hot-melt formations. The type of adhesive
depends upon the end use.
The coating medium determines the choice of process system:
With aqueous and solvent-based adhesives, the liquid components
are cured, evaporated or volatized after application
by hot air in the dryer section. By contrast, hot-melt adhesives
are heated to a liquid state for coating and then solidified by
cooling.
These products often require a silicone-coated base material.
The release layer - either paper or film - must protect the sensitive
adhesive coating and yet still be easily removable.
Both processes – coating adhesive or silicone – represent a
major challenge to the manufacturer of the machine. In addition
to the chemical and technical requirements for these coatings,
machines must also comply with the relevant safety and
environmental standards.
Adhesives and silicones can be applied separately on individual
systems or together on tandem coating lines - with the latter
coatings are applied inline.
Ecology meets Economy
If it is impossible to use other than a solvent-based adhesive,
BMB can lend further support by providing suitable pollution
control systems.
BMB also ensures that noise levels from its systems are kept to
a minimum.

REPRO – systems for the new generation of products in
communication and reprographics
Communications are a growing market and demand new substrates,
e.g. projection transparencies, magneto-optical data
carriers, photographic papers, thermosensitive and carbonless
papers and films. Such specialist materials require modern coating
systems working to the highest standards.
BMB produces and supplies the complete systems for all these
needs. Its modern machines incorporate high precision application
systems with settings and parameters that are fully and
accurately reproducible at any time.
The complete systems produced by BMB for the communication
and reprographic markets give constant coating weights within

COMPAFLEX – combined operation for a wide range of
packaging functions
Most products require suitable packaging whether to protect
the product for transport and storage, keep foodstuffs fresh or
enhance the marketing effect - or a combination of all three.
BMB converting systems are designed to coat, lacquer or laminate
paper, board, plastic film and aluminium foil in a way that
is compatible with the specific packaging function.
Multiple applications with high precision and economy
The configuration of a system depends upon the product
specification. A finished product often requires the application
of several coatings whereby each must be even, odour-free and
provide a sealed surface, etc.
BMB engineering reflects the latest developments in coating
technology. The required multiple PVDC coatings are applied
efficiently in a combined operation. Using heavy-duty construction,
precise settings and appropriate drive systems, BMB
machines produce first class results that are highly repeatable
and give precise coating volumes.
Such systems allow to gain FDA approval for the pharmaceutical

PROTAPE - systems for adhesive tapes and protective
foils and films
Numerous adhesive tapes and protective foils and films have
been developed for a diversity of applications.
The associated production systems must be able to process a
wide range of coatings from extremely thin protective foils /
films to extremely thick adhesive tapes. The adhesives used are
either aqueous or one of any number of solvent-based sytems
and so the demands on coating and drying machines are
equally diverse.
By combining customer product knowledge with BMB‘s considerable
expertise in machine construction, we can provide
flexible, durable and future-oriented solutions; i.e. the optimal
machine configuration. If necessary, our modern Technicum
R&D Centre can help select the right coating system and ensure
that the selected system meets customer requirements.

film and foils. It can, therefore supply unwinders and rewinders

Superroll turret winder
Large-scale winders suitable for very large and heavy reels
operating at high speeds.
The winders have a direct-drive connection to winding axles;
this ensures a backlash-free mechanical operation allowing the
use of drive mechanisms with maximum dynamic response. A
range of options is available - from guide roll drive mechanisms
to non-adhesive reel change on the winding element. This gives
customers considerable choice at the detailed-design stage.

CURTAIN COATER - new coating method with continously
variable coating width
A new high speed coating method that meets the most challenging
demands of the coating industry.
The BMB High Speed Curtain Coater is particularly easy to use.
The coating is applied through a nozzle running over the moving
web, granting an even and contactless coating. The weight
of the coating is controlled by the flow of the coating medium
and the speed of the web.
This method of coating originated in the photographic industry
has been further developed by BMB. It is now used for the
application of adhesives, Ink-Jet coatings and thermal and
silicone coatings.
The BMB High Speed Curtain Coating has the following advantages
over conventional processes:
- low maintenance costs
- lower drive rating requirement
- no components subject to wear and tear through contact-free
coating
- fewer web breaks by pressure reduction on the web
- no coating interruption
- no readjustment required if web thickness changed
- contour coating

Coating can be applied in a single-layer or simultaneously in multi-layers
The BMB High Speed Curtain Coater produces a contour coating; this means that the coating
thickness is uniform over the entire web. This process is extremely gentle to both the web and the
coating medium as the coating is applied without contact and at high speed. The result is a unique
coating quality.
The system has the additional advantage that the coating medium is not subject to a return flow or
circulation. The coating medium is applied in full when it flows through the nozzles onto the web.
The lateral guides, continously variable – patented by BMB – can be used to keep coating away
from the edges of the web.
