Sun and Sights in Lisbon
Nightlife
1
Estado Líquido
One of the seminal clubs in the Santos area has a
relaxed DJ vibe and live music at weekends. A hip sushi
bar opens till late upstairs.
2 Foxtrot
With a rambling series of rooms, a courtyard, pool
tables and kitschy decor, this old-style bar has become
a quintessential Lisbon milieu.
3 Incógnito
The name and door bell might suggest otherwise,
but this is one of Lisbon’s best venues for dancing the
night away. The 80s nostalgia has been a constant; now
it’s mixed with newer sounds (see Incógnito ).
4
Paradise Garage
Check out this ex-warehouse venue for live music,
often from outside the mainstream, by local and
international bands. The weekend after-hours sessions,
with softer DJ sounds, are legendary (see Paradise
Garage ).
5
Zocco Ultra Lounge
This recent makeover of Indochina is one of a
quartet of purpose-converted warehouse clubs in the
riverfront area between Santos and Alcântara. Zocco is
retro-modern in style, with a restaurant above the bar
and dance floor.
6 Kremlin
This classic Lisbon dance-music venue is still
throbbing to the sound of house. Nearby Kapital and
Konvento have the same owners, if somewhat different
crowds – but at dawn all converge on Kremlin, arriving
through internal passageways.
7 Speakeasy
This easy-going live music venue and somewhat
overpriced restaurant is found down at the docks. Jazz,
blues and funk are its specialities, with Monday night
jam sessions.
Alcântara Club
The current heir to Lisbon’s now-legendary
Alcântara-Mar club is living up to most of the high
expectations placed on it. Expect serious dancing,
drinking and flaunting (see Alcântara Club ).
9 Paródia
Dating from the mid-1970s, this miniature bar has
retained the decor of that era. If you remember the 70s,
the effect is nostalgic; if you don’t, it’s intriguing. Ring
the bell.
Buddha Lx
Housed in the attractive Modernist Alcântara port
terminal, Buddha Lx offers deep-house dancing, drinking
and chill-out lounging in an oriental-inspired setting.
Bars and Nightclubs
1 Lux
Lux is Lisbon’s most stylish and varied nightclub.
With a downstairs dance floor, an upstairs bar and dance
area, a roof-top terrace, groovy retro decor and a string
of hot DJs, there is substance to the hype.
2
Alcântara Club
In the same warehouse
premises as the revered
1990s Alcântara-Mar,
Alcântara Club still kicks up
a dancing frenzy.
➤ Rua da Cozinha
Paradise Garage
One of Lisbon’s best-known live venues contrasts
up-and-coming, occasionally alternative bands with a
pretty mainstream club scene on other nights.
➤ Rua João Oliveira Miguéis 38–48 • Map D5
Buddha Lx
Not affiliated with other
Buddha Bars, but not unlike
them either, Buddha Lx
offers a cosier, less
rigorously designed space in
which to soak up its
deep-house sounds. The
summer terrace is a treat, though the Indian knick-knacks
clash with the building’s Modernist soul. The first-floor
den is reserved for VIPs and big spenders.
5 Kremlin
Kremlin was the first big dance club in Lisbon and
it is still a great place to go if you really want to get down
and dance the night away. There is just a whiff of danger
about the place; the doormen always seem to be on
edge.
➤ Escadinhas da Praia 5 • Map E5
6 Incógnito
This veteran of 18 years has unobtrusively kept on
doing what it does best and draws a mostly low-profile
crowd. Sized between a bar and a club, it accommodates
both chilling and grooving. The music is a mixed bag,
with recent dance sounds on week nights, a broader
spectrum at weekends.
➤ Rua dos Poiais de São Bento 37 • Map F4
7
Clube do Mercado
This bar and club is now crucial to the Lisbon scene.
It has an ambitious programme covering hip-hop, funk,
