TONE STYLE<br />
The Costco scotch is lighter<br />
in color than the Macallan 18<br />
and has a nose full of oak and<br />
earth, with light hints of fruit,<br />
including pear and apricot.<br />
Its palette is a bit spicy, with<br />
notes of clove and orange<br />
zest, followed by a slightly dry<br />
finish. I also pick up on some<br />
leathery flavors (in a good way),<br />
with hints of dark berries and<br />
currant from the sherry finishing<br />
cask. Pour the whisky over<br />
rocks to open up some of the<br />
sweeter notes of vanilla and<br />
caramel—which is how the label<br />
recommends you enjoy it—and<br />
you’ve got yourself a damn<br />
respectable 20-year-old single<br />
malt, especially considering its<br />
$50 price tag.<br />
Just as you wouldn’t expect<br />
a $1,500 turntable to compete<br />
with a $15,000 turntable,<br />
you should not expect the<br />
Costco whisky to replace the<br />
Macallan 18 on your home bar.<br />
The Kirkland scotch is a solid<br />
everyday drinking whisky, while<br />
the Macallan 18 should be<br />
cherished and best enjoyed on<br />
special occasions, with good<br />
friends and, of course, with<br />
good music. l<br />
