WELCOME
NOTE
Alot of effort goes into improving the experiences
Jetstar offers.
Destinations are one example. We’ve just added three
cities in Japan — Sapporo, Fukuoka and Okinawa — to our
network, alongside Tokyo and Osaka. These will be fl own by our
new airline, Jetstar Japan, which is taking to the skies months
ahead of schedule on 3 July 2012*.
We know that being on time is important. Our A320 aircraft in
Australia and New Zealand are being equipped with cutting-edge
navigation technology, which reduces weather-related delays. It
means less time spent circling above heavy cloud and more time
at your destination. It also improves safety and burns less fuel.
On-board service is something we’re always working to
improve. Jetstar recently became the fi rst low-fares airline in the
world to be recognised by Business Traveller magazine for its
wine. That might surprise some but it’s the result of us revitalising
the Business Class service we offer on long-haul fl ights.
The wine that won us an award (Waipara Hills Sauvignon Blanc,
2010) is from the famous Marlborough region in New Zealand. I
can personally recommend a visit. Fly to Christchurch, jump in a
great experience.
MARCH
THE BEST
GIGS TO
GET TO
ART BY
THE OCEAN
Sculpture by the Sea returns to
Cottesloe Beach this March. We
talk to founding director David
Handley to fi nd out more
HOW HAS THE EVENT EVOLVED
SINCE IT STARTED IN 1997?
Sculpture by the Sea began at Bondi
as a one-day event with the aim of
creating a major free-to-the-public
event for the people of Sydney and
its visitors. The exhibition quickly
grew to become the largest annual
sculpture exhibition in the world
featuring over 100 sculptures and
attracting 500,000 visitors. In 2005,
Sculpture by the Sea went across
Australia to Perth where last
year’s exhibition attracted over
200,000 visitors.
WHY CHOOSE THE BEACH
AS THE VENUE?
The beach is quintessentially
Australian and where we like to
play. It’s also a site of natural
beauty which excites and inspires
sculptors. The stunning coastline
and terraced lawn of Cottesloe
Beach provide a wonderful place
for artists to exhibit their work
with varied locations and dramatic
backdrops for the sculptures.
EVENTS /// PROFILES /// FOOD /// DRINKS /// PLACES /// STYLE
HOW MANY SCULPTURES WILL BE
EXHIBITED THIS YEAR AND WHAT
ARE SOME TO LOOK OUT FOR?
We’ll see works from more than 70
artists. Crowd pleasers will include
Paul Caporn’s (WA) giant yellow
sculptural dump truck on the beach
and Wang Shugang’s (China) red
meditative fi gures.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE
WILL TAKE AWAY FROM
THIS EXHIBITION?
To enjoy the sculptures they like and
not worry about not liking others.
All of us have different tastes and
there’s something that everyone will
fi nd to enjoy at the show.
Sculpture by the Sea is on 1–19
March at Cottesloe Beach, Perth.
ROUGH AND TUMBLE
Tough Mudder is set to test the mental and physical
endurance of its competitors. Chief marketing offi cer
Alex Patterson shares what to expect
WHY BRING TOUGH MUDDER
TO AUSTRALIA?
It’s “probably the toughest event
on the planet”, and internationally,
there’s a perception that Australians
consider themselves to be a nation
of athletic and resilient men and
women, which is why we thought
Australia would be the perfect place
for the event.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE
TOUGHEST CHALLENGES IN
THE EVENT?
With obstacles designed by British
Special Forces, coupled with a
20km course, Tough Mudder gives
participants the opportunity to test
themselves in every way — all in
one place and all in one day.
WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE
FOR COMPETITORS?
Tough Mudder will punish you, no
matter your shape, size or current
level of fi tness, so we encourage
all participants to increase their
physical training. Check out
the Tough Mudder Workout for
training tips. The event is as much
about mental toughness, grit and
camaraderie as anything physical.
FESTIVAL
FEVER
Paul Grabowsky, artistic director
of the Adelaide Festival, tells us
about this year’s showcase
IT’S YOUR LAST YEAR AS
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR BUT YOUR
FIRST AS THE EVENT GOES
ANNUAL, ANY PRESSURE?
It feels a bit easier this time
around. The 2010 festival marked
its 50th anniversary, so there
were quite large expectations. I
feel that with this festival I have
an opportunity to focus on the
content for its own sake, and I’m
very happy with the results.
WHY MAKE THE ADELAIDE
FESTIVAL AN ANNUAL EVENT?
Both of our partner events, the
Adelaide Fringe and WOMAD,
have been annual for a number
of years, with great success.
There was a feeling that having
the festival remain biennial
meant that it was in a sense out
of sync with its environment.
WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR?
The revamped Writers’ Week,
which has a much broader focus,
and a shiny new infrastructure to
refl ect it. The other is the Barrio,
our dynamic, interactive and
totally cool late-night club.
Adelaide Festival is on 2–18 Mar at
various venues in Adelaide. Details
We catch up with funnyman Wil
Anderson who is set to have
audiences in stitches during
Australia’s comedy season
HOW HARD IS IT BEING A
STAND-UP COMEDIAN?
My dad is a farmer. That job is
hard. Comedy is indoor work with
no heavy lifting. I get paid to tell
people jokes, share a night of joy
with them, and I can drink while I’m
at work. They don’t let you do that
as a pilot.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN PEOPLE
DON’T LAUGH AT YOUR JOKES?
Write better jokes. The thing about
comedy is that you’re only as funny
as your last joke. You can’t rest on
your laurels. Rich Hall described
stand-up as a “joke-by-joke job
application”. If an audience doesn’t
laugh, you can’t say: “But hey, I’ve
won awards!”
HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH
NEW MATERIAL?
If you write a hit song you can sing
it forever. Comedy is all about new
material. No one comes to gigs and
yells out: “Do your ‘klim is milk
spelled backwards’ joke from 1998!
We all know the words to that one!”
I have a simple way of coming up
with new material: I sit alone in a
dark room and I remember that I
have a hideous mortgage and no
other skills. That does the trick!
have are people who book in groups
to get a concession price.
Lauren Messiah is Westfi eld’s
at bringing designer fashion to
clients at a fraction of the price.
We ask her how to travel in style
HOW CAN WE STOP OVER-
PACKING FOR HOLIDAYS?
Planning is the key. People
typically wear about half of what
they pack. Try packing versatile
pieces that can be mixed and
matched to create fresh looks.
WHAT FABRICS TRAVEL WELL?
Jersey is lightweight, comfortable,
stylish, and when packed
correctly will stay crease-free.
Denim is always crease-free and
stylish. Go with dark-wash jeans
in a classic cut.
YOUR PET TRAVEL
FASHION PEEVE?
Nothing says “not only am I on
vacation but my wardrobe is too”
like a tracksuit. If you’re seeking
comfort, go with a nice pair of
leggings paired with a pullover
sweater or a cashmere wrap.
Finish the look with practical and
stylish accessories.
WHAT IS INDISPENSABLE FOR
GOING FROM DAY TO NIGHT?
A statement necklace — it can
take a day dress into the evening
and dress up jeans and a top.
The same can be achieved with
a scarf. And always pack a
versatile pair of fl ats and heels to
transform an outfi t.
SWOOP
We bring you some of the more
unusual ways to scare yourself
2
SWOOP: ROTORUA
Daredevils of any age can
experience the Swoop, a
40m-high swing that sends up to
three people hurtling through the air
at 130kph. Each rider is suspended
in a full-body sling which makes it a
bit less scary. Kind of. Anticipation
builds during the slow winch to the
top of the ride, especially if you’re
not the one holding the release
cord. Swooping is a great choice
for families with children who don’t
make the height and/or weight
requirements for other rides.
BRIDGE BUNGY: AUCKLAND
Thrill seekers get a double
rush with this heart-pumping
experience which starts with a
hair-raising walk along a metal
gantry under Auckland Bridge and
fi nishes with a bungy jump over the
ocean. AJ Hackett’s new world fi rst
is one of the few sites in the world
offering every possible jumping
option: ankle tie, harness jump or
tandem — which makes it tempting
to repeat this bungy (second jumps
are half price). If the tides are right,
you’ll get to touch the sky and
ocean. Enjoy the view rather than
looking down while walking across
the bridge! Tel: +64 (9) 360 7748.
A FEW TRAIL
RUNNING TIPS:
Before registering for an event, visit the event
website and read course descriptions carefully.
Train adequately for the distance
you’re attempting, incorporating some hill
training sessions.
Buy proper trail running shoes — they’ll
boost your stability and protect your feet from
bruising and injuries.
Practice running a section of the course,
preferably with a mate.
Go slowly, giving yourself time to adapt to
the terrain.
Use a water bottle or hydration pack.
ALPINE SKYRUN
If you’re new to alpine running,
where it
began
From representing Australia on the world stage,
to embracing her new TV role which honours her
performance roots, Tina Arena is truly a national icon
WORDS JOSIE GAGLIANO
STAR STRUCK //
027

STAR STRUCK
You could kick off a story about
Tina Arena citing all the obvious
descriptions and accolades —
cut her teeth in showbiz at age
seven; a huge star in France; one
of the most enduring talents
of our time. But you could
also start a piece on Arena
highlighting she’s one of the
nicest, most giving, honest, funny women
Australian showbiz has ever seen.
Born Filippina Lidia Arena to Sicilian
immigrant parents Giuseppe and
Franca in East Keilor, Victoria, 44
years ago, Tina clearly had a natural
knack for entertaining from an early
age. She made her TV debut on an
Australian talent show called Young
Talent Time (YTT) at the tender age of
“seven and a half”.
Arena recalls: “Our time
wasn’t as complicated as it
is today; we were much
more happy-golucky,
nonchalant
kids. It wasn’t
a generation
of high
technology
and internet,
so we didn’t
have all those
‘stumbling blocks’.
It was a very
innocent time.”
Indeed, witness
footage of Arena on
the original YTT
of the 1970s, and
you wonder,
Tina Arena herself
STAR STRUCK
what would she like to tell that
“Tiny Tina” (as she was dubbed)
today? “Ah, interesting! What
would I tell that girl? Be very
aware of what lies ahead. Good
and bad, absolutely.”
Indeed, her fame on the
defunct show — recently revived
and spectacularly re-booted on
Channel TEN with Arena now
a judge and mentor — didn’t
automatically mean an easy ride
for the girl who left YTT at age 16
(the show’s offi cial “graduation”
age). She launched into club gigs
until landing a recording contract
album, Strong As Steel, included
the hit “I Need Your Body”. Watch
it back now and it seems
miles away from who
she is today. Arena
happily puts it all
in perspective.
“I don’t look at
that and think,
‘Oh I’ve come so
far!’ I look at it as a
tapestry; it’s like a
blanket or a piece of
work that has evolved
with time. It was never
going to stay the same. The
most interesting aspect of it has
been the reinvention. Looking
back — without knowing back
then that reinvention was such
an integral part of what it is that
I do, and anybody in the music
business who wants to have a
career has to continue to reinvent
and evolve — it all makes complete
sense now.”
Arena’s next step in her
evolution was to release the wellreceived
second album Don’t
biggest selling album of 1995 and
“Reinvention was
singer to date. It sold more than
two million copies worldwide and
was certifi ed platinum 10 times in
Australia, with the song “Chains”
still one of her most well-known.
This was followed up with the
album In Deep, which actually
spawned many country music
covers of songs she’d penned. But
it was the next step which proved
to be the most life-changing
for Arena. After collaborating
with Marc Anthony on “I Want
NORTHERN
ADVENTURE
Darwin has all
the ingredients
for a memorable
this winter
HUB //
Darwin is not like the rest of Australia. I
get a few hints of that on my fi rst morning
in town: the taxi driver talks about 10m
crocs in a nearby billabong, there’s a
UFO story on the front of the paper and a
guy standing in the middle of the mall is
wearing three hefty snakes.
I’m in the Top End for the fi rst time to escape winter.
The dry season up here runs from April to October
and I soon discover it’s true to its name. Every day
dawns blue skies and warmth, builds up to a baking
heat by mid-afternoon and fi nishes with a textbook red
golden sunset. The locals move around slowly in the
heat and you soon fi nd yourself doing the same.
There’s plenty to do in Darwin. It’s got a rollicking
history and there are indigenous art galleries on
every corner. Blocks of open-air cafés and bars on
Mitchell Street get rowdy most nights. But it can wait
— I’m keen to see the Northern Territory’s outback.
BULEY ROCKHOLE AND TERMITE MOUNDS: GETTY IMAGES
I hire a car and point it down the long, straight
Stuart Highway. An hour-and-a-half south of
Darwin is Litchfi eld National Park. The country
is parched and the trees in the red dirt are fi reblackened.
But water runs through it, cascading
off waterfalls and carving out glorious, unexpected
swimming holes. Litchfi eld is a showcase of these
swimming holes, termite mounds, wildlife and
pockets of rainforest on an easy driving circuit.
Florence Falls is particularly majestic, with a
basin almost surrounded by sheer cliff s and thick
greenery. The water is surprisingly cool, crystal
clear and completely invigorating. Families splash
around happily. I dive under the waterfall and all I
can hear is the roar as I peer through a window of
white water.
Getting out of the water is almost as good as
getting in. You don’t need a towel when you can wait
a couple of minutes for the same eff ect.
After eight swims in eight diff erent waterholes
and creeks, I camp at Walker Creek campsite, where
each site has its own private swimming hole. I cook
a simple dinner over the fi re and kill dozens of
mosquitoes, which get busy under bright stars.
but they can see, hear and smell everything with 99%
of their body underwater.”
Within 15 minutes we see three large salties
and a freshwater crocodile swimming or sunning
themselves on the bank. The second one takes a good
look at us with yellow eyes before launching into
the water and swimming straight under the boat.
Everyone slides away from the edge.
The half-day tour is a kaleidoscope of wetland
wildlife — a pair of iconic jabirus stalk the shallows, a
water buff alo appears for a drink, a sea eagle and kite
fi ght over a fi sh and “Jesus” birds appear to walk on
water as they skip across the lilies.
Only in Darwin would you fi nd hundreds of crocs
Cove is a great place to see and learn a bit more about
the leathery reptiles. This is where I fi nd myself in a
small perspex cage being slowly lowered into a pool
with a 5.5m croc called Chopper. I’ve just been told
Chopper’s bite power is the same as a 3.5 tonne truck
there are bite marks all over the cage.
and six-time taekwondo world champion
American Gemma Nguyen will play the
For anyone who’s seen the animated
fi lm, it’s hard to imagine how some scenes
— of dragons swooping over oceans and
spiralling to earth, breathing fi re and
smoke — can be re-created in a stage show.
“It’s seriously going to be the world’s most
ambitious show, using the most cuttingedge
technology,” says Rarmian.
But for all the technical wizardry, it
will be the dragons that will amaze, and
each of them has been built in a workshop
in Melbourne. Global Creatures is the
company behind the incredibly successful
Walking With Dinosaurs show. One person
to see that show was head of DreamWorks
Animation, Jeff rey Katzenberg. “At the time,
we were fairly far into making How to Train
Your Dragon,” he says. And just as Global
Creatures were wondering what production
would showcase their technology next,
Katzenberg came over for a visit.
According to creature designer Sonny
Tilders, each of the 24 dragons appearing on
stage takes about three months and 25 people
to build. The largest, Red Death, has a 12m-high
head and a tail that stretches for 20m.
044
All the dragons use the most
cutting-edge technology —
animatronics that allow it to blink,
cause muscles to move under
the skin when it fl aps its wing, and
let it smile.
Sarah and Rarmian can’t wait
until the show premieres in
Melbourne this month.
“Not only are the audience
going to be watching the show,
they get to be part of it too,”
says Sarah. “Every aspect of the
show is going to be a spectacle.”
Adds Rarmian: “It really is
HIT THE HARBOUR
It’s been a long time coming, but
at last the Museum of
Contemporary Art (MCA) is
reopening after a AU$53 million
redevelopment. The reopening,
on 29 March, will be marked by
a series of talks by international
artists and special events,
including what can only be
described as an extreme art event.
If you want to see it in its entirety,
you’ll have to stay awake for
24 hours.
“The Clock”, by Christian
Marclay, has caused an
international sensation in the
art world — it won the Golden
Lion for best artist at this year’s
Venice Biennale, and has attracted
record-breaking crowds wherever
it’s been screened.
“The Clock” is a 24-hour video
consisting of thousands of short
movie extracts, each suggesting
a particular time of day, edited
052
TOP/BELOW: Rafael
Lozano-Hemmer’s summer
exhibition preceded the
MCA’s reopening
together to form a single fi lm. It will be
shown in its entirety on the MCA’s opening
day, then played continuously during
regular museum opening hours. Every
Thursday there will be a special 24-hour
presentation of this work.
There are plenty of other things to see.
As the museum now has an extra 700m 2 of
exhibition space, it can fi nally show works
from its permanent collection. Curator
Glenn Barkley’s exhibition, “Volume One:
MCA Collection”, features highlights from
the past 20 years of Australian art.
There’s also an exhibition called
“Marking Time”, about how artists see
time, and a fabulous new sculpture terrace
overlooking the harbour.
Beyond the island
nation’s all-inclusive
resorts, an adventure
lover’s paradise is
waiting to be discovered
WORDS ROB MCFARLAND
ADRENALINE //
When you’re about to tackle
24km of tumultuous
whitewater in deepest
darkest Fiji, it’s good to feel
like you’re in safe hands. First
impressions are encouraging. My guide’s
name is Moses.
Moses works for
Rivers Fiji and I’m on
their Upper Navua
rafting trip, an all-day
adventure that follows
the river as it slices
through a chasm of black
volcanic rock in the
remote highlands of Viti
Levu island. At times,
the sheer-sided walls
of the canyon narrow
to just seven metres
wide while waterfalls
tumble down through
a dense canopy of ferns
and bamboo. All around
is the unmistakable
background music of
the jungle.
Rivers Fiji has been running this trip
for 12 years after negotiating leases on a
narrow strip of land along the river from
local landowners. By leasing the land, they
have stopped the logging that is threatening
to decimate much of the rainforest in this
area. It’s Fiji’s fi rst land-lease conservation
project and the initiative has won them
several accolades, including three
eco-tourism awards.
Getting to the river involves a 6am start,
a bumpy two-hour drive up a logging track
and a strenuous 30-minute hike along
a jungle path that provides tantalising
glimpses of the river. But it’s a small price to
pay for the privilege of rafting through this
spectacular wilderness.
ADRENALINE //
The seven guides on the trip are all from
local villages and the camaraderie and
banter between them is a joy to watch. All
day Moses entertains us with anecdotes
about his childhood and the characters he’s
met since working on the river.
It’s a reminder of how simple life can be
in the less accessible parts of the island.
Until he started working for Rivers Fiji,
Moses had never seen a sandwich. The fi rst
time he tried to make one, he put everything
on the table in it, including a cookie.
Twelve years on, he’s guiding the likes
of Bill Gates, Jessica Simpson and Chuck
Norris down the same river he used to play
in as a kid. It’s a compelling demonstration
of how tourism can help both local
communities and the environment.
While the rapids are on the tame side,
Moses spices them up by going through them
backwards or spinning the raft midway. Each
one is celebrated with a whooping cheer and a
clattering high-fi ve of paddles that echoes off
the ancient canyon walls.
Nearby is Massage Waterfall where the
more adventurous take it in turns to be
pummelled by a torrent of water cascading
from the rocks high above. Others choose
to lie back on the beach and gaze in wonder
at the towering canyon walls fringed with
dense jungle foliage. It’s a scene you simply
couldn’t see any other way.
After an early start and
n four hours of paddling, almost
s everyone falls asleep on the bus
on the way back. Some people
still have a two-hour transfer back to Nadi but
the rest of us are returning to a nearby town
that has become known as the adventure
capital of Fiji — Pacifi c Harbour.
057

ADRENALINE
Pacifi c Harbour represents the “other”
side of Fiji — outside the all-inclusive resorts
for which the country is so well known. If
you want to interact with the locals and have
access to a wide range of adventure activities,
this is the place to come.
I’m staying at Uprising Beach Resort,
a laidback property in Pacifi c Harbour
that looks out over one of Fiji’s fi nest
beaches. White-water rafting, shark diving,
horse-riding, jet-skiing, surfi ng, sailing,
golf, game fi shing, hiking, kite boarding
and even zip-lining can all be done nearby.
I spoke to a guy who has dived all over the
world and he said the shark dive here was
the best he’s done. No cage, just you sitting
on the ocean fl oor while fi ve-metre tiger
sharks slowly circle above.
The following morning, I try my hand at
zip-lining. Zip Fiji has built a one-kilometre
course comprising eight zip lines that range
from 15 to 220m. What’s impressive is that
the platforms are suspended from the trees,
not bolted into them, and the pathways for
the lines were cleared by gently pulling the
trees apart, not cutting them down.
While Pacifi c Harbour is primarily
known for its adventure activities, it’s not
a complete cultural void. The nearby Arts
Village is a large integrated shopping centre
and cultural hub that contains more than 50
stores and 14 restaurants. From Wednesday
to Saturday, there’s a daily program of
tours and shows that includes a canoe ride
through ancient Fiji and a tour around a
chief’s house. Particularly compelling is the
show by the legendary Beqa fi rewalkers,
who walk barefoot across white-hot coals
and perform a series of war dances.
It’s a reminder that as recently as 100
years ago, Fijian tribes were still killing
and eating their enemies. Now that’s one
adventure activity I’m happy to pass on.
The nation’s fi rst commercial crops of cocoa
are proving a hit with growers, consumers
and restaurateurs in tropical Queensland
Back in the 1960s it was
a radical idea. Now it’s
a reality — the idea of
cocoa grown in Australia
and used to produce our
very own fi rst origin chocolate.
We all know chocolate is said
to be an aphrodisiac, but what
could be more romantic than
cocoa grown in the foothills of the
world-heritage listed Daintree
Rainforest — a place where rare
fauna and fl ora are constantly
being discovered?
Just a few small plantations
in this unique region are now
home to 2m-tall cocoa trees that
are producing Australia’s only
WORDS ROBYN RANKIN
commercial crops. And although
Daintree Estates chocolate was
only launched in November 2011,
the company is already having
trouble keeping up with demand.
Cocoa was an experimental crop
at a research station in the Cairns
hinterland in the 1960s and was
grown by individual farmers
who imported seeds from Papua
New Guinea to learn whether it
could be viable. Some of those
fi rst trees still produce pods. But
things got serious in 1997 when
Cadbury Schweppes (Australia)
approached government agencies
in Queensland, the Northern
Territory and Western Australia
about the feasibility of a cocoa
industry in northern Australia. A
research project started in 1999,
trialling cocoa in three northern
Australian growing regions and
mechanisation opportunities.
Trials in Far North Queensland
(FNQ) excelled, with good yields
and quality, and no major pest or
disease problems.
However, that is where the
concept ground to a halt — until
Daintree Cocoa Pty Ltd (DCPL)
came on the scene in mid-2010
with a new business model that
didn’t rely on the need to compete
on a world commodity cocoa bean
price. This, together with ensuring
Daintree Estates has developed
innovative nursery processes
to produce healthy seedlings
as well as eco-friendly and
environmentally sound
farming practices that result
in superior yields.
The company has also designed
and built an automatic pod splitter
and wet bean remover, a specially
adapted fermentation process,
and solar driers that cope with the
changeable rainfall conditions in
the region.
In the process, Daintree Estates
to take a punt on the new crop
in addition to the sugar cane his
family had grown on the farm for
70 years, says the business is a
win-win in every sense. “It’s a big
investment and it’s very labour
intensive, but growers are paid not
only for their crop, but as they’re
DCPL executive chairman
they’re in discussions with a
Daintree Estates could snare even
consume in Australia is made
from cocoa grown overseas,
but now in FNQ we’re growing
and making Australia’s fi rst
chocolate,” Durrant says. Just four
farmers are currently supplying
the new enterprise and although
they only launched in November,
Durrant says they’re already
desperately seeking more growers
in the region.
INSTRUCTIONS
The objective of Sudoku is to fi ll in the
missing squares so that each row, column and
3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through to 9.
To get you started, here are a few tactics...
Scan each horizontal and vertical band
consisting of three 3x3 boxes. It’s often
easiest to start in a spot with the most
numbers already given. If you can fi nd the
same number in two rows, you know that
number must be in the third (the same goes
4 3 8
5 9 3
3 1 5
3 2 5 6
for columns). Now see which intersecting
rows and columns can be eliminated because
they also contain that number. (This method
is called slicing and dicing.)
Some Sudoku fans like to pencil in
possible answers in the corners of individual
squares. Once you have a few numbers fi lled
in, you may also fi nd it handy to jot down a
list of missing numbers for each row, column
and box.
A TOAST
Jetstar’s has achieved another fi rst, taking out the
Best Business Class White Wine at the Cellars in
the Sky Awards in February. Cellars in the Sky is
an international award program run by Business
Traveller Magazine. The awards recognise the
quality of wine available on long-haul fl ights.
The winning white, a 2010 Waipara Hills
Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand (NZ), achieved
a total of 95 points from a possible 100. Judges
described the wine as: “Crisp, fresh and herby with
a hint of celery. Not too acidic and not too much
residual sugar. A good core — balanced, focused
and intense.”
Jetstar formed a dedicated wine panel in 2011 to
design and update Jetstar’s wine list. Expert Matt
Skinner, who sits on the panel, said Jetstar were
proud to be showcasing good value Australian and
NZ wines. “These awards are not only a testament
to Jetstar’s Business Class service, but to the
outstanding talent and professionalism of the
winemakers based Australia and New Zealand,”
said Skinner.
One Year On
This month marks the anniversary of the devastating
earthquake and tsunami in Japan and one year on,
World Vision is still helping communities recover
Without warning, the
earth jolted. A vast
wall of water engulfed
homes, cars and
buildings. Desperate families
searched for missing loved ones.
Many were never found. And then,
a nuclear emergency. Freezing
weather conditions. No food, power
or running water. Destruction.
Devastation. Japan, one year ago.
QUICK ACTION IN A CRISIS
World Vision responded
immediately to provide relief.
Thanks to the support of StarKids
and the Australian and international
community, World Vision assisted
more than 84,000 people in the
most severely affected areas in
northern Japan.
For people who had lost
everything, essential items like
blankets, clothing, nappies, hygiene
kits, bottled water, kitchen utensils
and bedding brought some much
needed relief. World Vision also
provided food through community
kitchen projects.
Mrs Saijo and her 16-monthold
daughter Kouka stayed in an
evacuation centre supported by
World Vision. “We adults can bear
going without meals and clean
clothes for a couple of days,” she
said. “But it’s really diffi cult for
small children without milk and
nappies. So it was very helpful that
nappies were supplied in
this centre.
“Thank you very much. I lost my
084
house, possessions and everything
else, but I am so grateful to
everyone who is helping us,”
she said.
PROTECTING CHILDREN
Following the disaster, many
children who lost family, friends,
homes and schools showed signs of
stress and sleeping problems.
World Vision set up seven Child
Friendly Spaces to support children
affected by the disaster. Children
could play and learn in a safe
environment and were reassured
by a normal routine. World
Vision also helped schools with
educational supplies, uniforms,
gym equipment, temporary
classrooms and a school bus to help children return
to school.
Tokura Primary School was washed away by the
tsunami. A World Vision Child Friendly Space gave the
evacuated children a place to play games, study and do
art and craft activities. When classes fi nally resumed
the students were given notebooks and pencils. Mr
Asokawa, the school’s head teacher, was glad the
children could move on. “This is a really big step for
us in rebuilding our lives. We really appreciate World
Vision for supporting us,” he said.
THE RECOVERY CONTINUES
One year on, World Vision continues to help rebuild
lives through Child Friendly Spaces, assistance for the
elderly and support for local fi shing industries. Friday,
11 March 2011 was a dark day for Japan, but thanks to
support from World Vision and StarKids, the sun will
rise again in the land of the rising sun.

BILLIONS
OF YEARS IN
THE MAKING.
The earliest and simplest life-forms on this planet contain near
perfect ratios of nutrients needed by humans for complete health.
The microscopic fresh-water plants known as Spirulina and
Chlorella were here long before humans walked on this Earth.
They are both key components of our Super Greens blend and
here’s why you should consider taking them instead of vitamin
and mineral supplements.
In nature, we fi nd only foods that provide a whole spectrum
of nutrients that work together in ways science is yet to fully
comprehend. There are no “vitamin C” fruits growing on trees,
and no “calcium leaves” on vegetables.
Super Greens is the total wholefood package; a blend of four
of the most nutrient-dense, green superfoods on this planet—
Spirulina, Chlorella, Barley Grass and Wheat Grass.
Collectively these miracle-class superfoods provide an astonishing
array of vitamins, macrominerals, trace minerals, omega fatty acids,
enzymes, anti-oxidants, protein, chlorophyll and phyto-nutrients
too numerous to list.
To control weight, gain energy, look and feel great, take Super
Greens powder with juice and your favourite fruits to make
delicious fruit smoothies. Or try tablets if more convenient.
Nature spent a long time getting it right; it’s much quicker for you.
Woolworths and Safeway supermarkets, selected health food stores and pharmacies.
All our products, including Spirulina, Chlorella, Barley Grass and Wheat Grass
are also sold separately and can be obtained in all sizes direct from our website or
