WELCOME NOTE DECEMBER
As we come to the end of a fabulous year full of travel to new places,
we are fi lled with anticipation that 2012 will hold more exciting
experiences that we can share. December is Jetstar Asia Airways’
seventh anniversary, so expect lots of special fare deals coming your
they get rolled out through the fl eet.
We start fl ying direct from Singapore to Hanoi mid-December, so our story on
page 32 about the Tay Ho district will encourage you to explore outside the Old
Quarter. Discover the energy beneath the tranquil surface of this West Lake area
— its restaurant and bar life as well as its creative beat.
We also have Australia’s favourite Vietnamese chef Luke Nguyen on the cover.
A fi rst-generation Vietnamese-Australian, Nguyen steps into a new season with
his travel-food show Luke Nguyen’s Greater Mekong and the launch of his new
cookbook, Indochine. Journey with him as he reveals ever more delicious dishes
and cultural gems along the way. Find out more on page 26.
Whether it’s our suggestions of the best places to wind down and have a
drink in party-town Phuket (page 38), how to be on a perpetual high in Macau
(page 63) or deciding which local Singapore designer to buy into next year
(page 56), Jetstar Asia Magazine is always ready to help you make the most of
your trip.
HOW MANY RACES HAVE YOU
GOT UNDER YOUR BELT?
I haven’t done many yacht races
in my life. I started sailing in Italy
10 years ago with my cousin. We
took part in several winter series
at the local yacht club and a few
national championships. My career
as a professional sailor started in
2006 on a Farr 70’ racer cruiser.
I’ve done the Rolex circuit in the
Mediterranean, the Giraglia, the
Trofeo Zegna and the Maxi World
Series in Sardinia, among others.
After that, I crossed the Atlantic,
Panama and the Pacifi c where
I landed in New Zealand at the
end of 2007. For three and a half
years I raced regularly on a couple
of 50-footers in the fi rst division
doing inshore and off shore races.
WHAT’S YOUR STRATEGY TO WIN
THE RACE?
The fl eet seems competitive. A
good strategy would be to stay
ahead from the start and keep
the lead.
The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta
is on 3-10 Dec at Kata Beach
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT
SHARING THE STAGE WITH SOME
OF THE WACKIEST ACTS AROUND,
LIKE THE DIM SUM DOLLIES AND
KUMAR IN THE UPCOMING CRAZY
CHRISTMAS SERIES?
It’s great fun, especially backstage
where the seriously crazy antics are
performed! It’s always a real pleasure
working with friends who are all
committed to putting up a show of
high standards.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM
YOUR PERFORMANCE?
More of what our fans have come
to expect of us: lush harmonies and
great arrangements, but we’re going
to try something different as well this
year. Since there’s going to be a swing
band, we thought we’d try to work
something with them as well.
YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN PERFORMING
TOGETHER A LONG TIME. HOW
WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR
RELATIONSHIP WITH ONE ANOTHER?
We have had many different
members in the past but I would say
that this combination is the best
so far in terms of friendships over
and beyond the singing. We all have
very strong opinions and want our
say. Despite that, we easily resolve
our issues with a good meal and a
shopping trip. We share the same
sense of humour and can laugh
at the same joke time after time.
Honestly, while we may ‘bitch’
about each other like crazy (behind
each other’s backs), we truly love
LEFT-RIGHT:
Timothy Huang,
Gerald Tan, Simone
Khoo, Sam Kan,
Hazrul Nizam
each other and cannot see anyone
being replaced.
ALL OF YOU HAVE DAY JOBS. HOW
DO YOU FIND THE TIME TO GET
TOGETHER AND SING?
We commit to meeting at least once a
week, either on a Saturday or Sunday.
But if there is the need, we will meet
more frequently. It’s so much a part
of our lives that all our partners are
involved in some way or another.
WHO’S THE BIGGEST DIVA IN
THE GROUP?
All fi ngers are going to be pointing
at everyone else! Let’s just say the
smallest diva is the only female.
It’s time to head out to the great
outdoors and do something healthy
for your heart
“For most individuals, aerobic
exercise at least three times a week
for 30 minutes each will suffi ce”, says
Dr Michael Lim, medical director and
senior consultant cardiologist at the
Singapore Heart, Stroke and Cancer
Centre. That’s 90 minutes a week.
Many people cite lack of time
as a reason for not exercising. But
consider this: 90 minutes is nearly the
amount of time — 87.5 minutes, to
be exact — that an average American
user spends on Facebook every week.
If we can take out enough time
to regularly update status and feed
FarmVille animals, surely some time
can be made for working out as well?
The need to keep fi t is not restricted
to the older generation, either. That
heart problems do not affect the
young is one of the most common
misconceptions in vogue, according
to Dr Lim. Young or old, the heart
it out.
WELL + GOOD
“As a rule of thumb, the level of
exercise is considered suffi cient if
you can achieve 85 per cent of your
calculated maximum heart rate (220
– age). Hence, with age the intensity
of exercise should be decreased,”
remarks the cardiologist.
Before you charge out of the house
though, there are some things to
consider. Once you’ve been given
the medical all-clear, the good news
is that there is a variety of exercises
to choose from for those who are
put off by running, whether it’s on
the pavement or on the treadmills.
“Roller blading, skating, cycling and
dancing are aerobic exercises which
can be both enjoyable and yet gentle
on your knees as compared to jogging
or running,” advises the doctor.
It’s a no-brainer, really. Indulging
in something enjoyable that is
actually good for you? That’s a rare
situation in any walk of
life and one that should
be pounced upon
RELOAD AGENCY
I’ve long been a fan of Red
Lantern, Sydney’s edgiest
Vietnamese restaurant run
by brother and sister Luke
& Pauline Nguyen and Pauline’s
partner, chef Mark Jensen. I knew
Nguyen to say ‘hi’ to but had never
sat down with him for a long chat,
so I was delighted to pin him
down recently at MasterChef Live
to learn a little more about his life
and various projects. His story
is fascinating and his natural,
enthusiastic manner is contagious.
As he talked, I found myself
immersed in his discovery of his
parents’ homeland, a country he
didn’t even set foot in until he was
19 years old.
In 1978, Nguyen’s parents fl ed
southern Vietnam along with
thousands of others, and shortly
afterwards his mother gave birth
to him in a Thai refugee camp.
A year later, the family made it
to Australia, ultimately settling
in Cabramatta in south-western
Sydney, where his parents ran
a restaurant.
Nguyen recalls that in those
early years “it was impossible
to even fi nd lemongrass — but
slowly, as other Vietnamese
refugees were drawn to the area,
a community developed and soon
Cabramatta had the familiar
sounds, smells, language and
produce that my parents had left
behind. When I left, at the age of
17, and moved to Surry Hills, it
was like leaving Vietnam.”
After school, Nguyen headed
to university to study computer
science as his parents expected.
“I lasted a week,” he admits. “It
wasn’t for me; I always knew I
wanted to open a restaurant.” He
explains: “My parents had worked
so hard in their restaurant out
of necessity; they didn’t think it
was a worthwhile thing for their
children to do. They said I was
‘wasting my education’, but in
Australia we have choices and
options — here you can follow
your passions.”
Nguyen also knew that once
he opened his own restaurant
it would be hard to get away for
holidays and travel, so fi rst he set
off to see the world, back-packing
through 14 countries, fi nishing
up in Vietnam. He was the fi rst of
his family to ‘return’ to Vietnam.
“Of course, for me it wasn’t
returning,” he explains. “I was
born in Thailand, but even so, it
Luke Nguyen wants
to showcase the ‘real’
Vietnam through
its cuisine
felt like coming home. But it was
only once I arrived in Vietnam
and met aunties and uncles and
grandparents that I started to
understand my own parents;
things suddenly made sense — the
strictness and the work ethic. Dad
would always say, ‘We risked our
lives coming to this free country —
you can’t waste the opportunities.’
They were always working in the
restaurant, and so were we; while
our friends were off playing, we
were working.”
“When I was researching my
second book, Songs of Sapa, I met
a young girl at a fruit stall in a
market in Hoi An; she was peeling
mangoes and mixing them with
condensed milk and ice to make the
classic fruit shakes. She was tiny,
only about 10 years old, and such
a perfectionist I said ‘Gee, your
mum’s taught you well’, looking
at the older lady at the stall, and
she said ‘Oh she’s not my mum,
she’s my boss.’ I said: ‘What do you
mean she’s not your mum? Why
are you working here — why aren’t
you at school?’ and she said ‘I don’t
go to school — it costs $100 a year
and I can’t aff ord it.’ I was like wow,
I just never thought that there’d be
10-year-olds that weren’t at school.
I felt guilty — I’d bought jeans for
$100 and that’s a kid’s education
for a year. So Suzanna Boyd, my
partner, and I set up The Little
Lantern Foundation in conjunction
with Reach, a charity in central
Vietnam, to train disadvantaged
youth in hospitality.
“As I was researching Songs
of Sapa, which is about regional
Vietnamese cuisine, I was
intrigued to learn about the
ingredients the French had
introduced. Before the French
came, beef wasn’t used in
Vietnamese cooking — buff alo
were working animals so they
weren’t eaten. Then the French
arrived and said ‘Look at all
these cattle — why aren’t you
eating them?’. Coff ee, asparagus,
artichokes, dill, tomatoes, beer...
We didn’t drink beer — now I
think we’re the second biggest
beer-drinking nation. Baking’s
probably the best example: I used
to take a baguette to school in my
lunch box every day with pâté and
cold cuts and pork terrine — to me
this was Vietnamese food.
“So I started researching
my latest book, Indochine. I
travelled around the country and
interviewed 90-year-olds who had
lived through the colonial times
— they were so full of stories. In
every home I visited there was an
old cabinet called a garde manger,
which was used to store food
before the days of refrigerators. If
you ask any Vietnamese kid what
it is they’ll tell you it’s a garde
manger — and they assume it’s a
Vietnamese word — but of course
it’s French. We don’t have a word
for it in Vietnamese — we’ve just
adopted the French word.”
And what’s next in Nguyen’s
discovery of his ancestral
homeland? “I fell in love with the
Mekong the fi rst time I went to
Vietnam. So my next television
show, Luke Nguyen’s Greater
Mekong, follows the Mekong
from its origin in China, through
Myanmar then northern Thailand
into Laos and Cambodia then
fi nally into Vietnam — along the
way I discovered the diff erent
cuisines and cultures and also the
diff erent landscapes that it fl ows
through. Next year, I’ll also start
taking boutique culinary tours to
Vietnam. Culinary tours seemed
the next logical step. There’s so
much to see and experience all
over the country — I want to
showcase the ‘real’ Vietnam.”
Hanoi’s Tay Ho district is getting livelier
as it gets an injection of new residents
HANOI
Rising rents in more
central parts of the
city have pushed local
restaurateurs to the scenic
shores of West Lake,
known locally as Tay Ho,
and now this unique, up and coming
quarter is a great place to experience both
modern and traditional Hanoi.
Hemmed in by two of Hanoi’s most hectic
thoroughfares, yet one of the city’s most
tranquil and diverse areas, the West Lake
area is a charming locale in which to enjoy a
Vietnamese ca phe da (iced coff ee), pick up
gourmet goodies and unique pieces for the
home and wardrobe, or take a seat at some
of the city’s top fi ne-dining tables.
Built entirely over the water, the
InterContinental Hanoi Westlake is one of
Hanoi’s best hotels. Guests enjoy panoramic
views over the lake from palatial-sized
operators to recognise the area’s
potential. He says that when he
established Vine restaurant there
in 2003 there was little in the
way of development; the area was peppered
with water-fi lled bomb craters and people
said he was “crazy” to open a fi ne-dining
restaurant in a Vietnamese residential area.
Today, Vine Restaurant and its sister
wine and cigar shop Vine Cellar Door have
built a solid reputation. Berger left Vine
to start his own business in 2007, and
the four-storey, glass-fronted
Don’s, set on the lake opposite
the Sheraton Hotel, has become
synonymous with fantastic
international cuisine, from pizzas
for locals and expats after dark.
Buckle up for an excursion to this vibrant Indonesian town a couple of hours’
drive from the Indonesian capital of Jakarta
WORDS AULIA R SUNGKAR PHOTOGRAPHY TIMUR ANGIN
Located some 150km south-east of
Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia’s West
Java province has a quaint atmosphere.
With a population of approximately 2.5
million, Bandung has a laid-back lifestyle
that is diff erent from the country’s capital
with all its hustle and bustle.
Just a two-hour drive from Jakarta
puts you within reach of Bandung’s
crisp mountain air, historical buildings,
fusion food and great shopping deals.
It’s no wonder the city folks of Jakarta
hit the road so often for a weekend
getaway there.

UNFORGETTABLE HISTORY
Dubbed the Paris of Java,
Bandung has a mix of European
elements that blend with Eastern
culture. As we drive around, we
witness the presence of historical
buildings that maintain the city’s
aesthetic value.
Literally meaning ‘Independence
Building’, the art deco-styled
Gedung Merdeka was the venue for
the momentous 1955 Asian-African
Conference. Today, it serves as a
museum displaying the conference’s
related historical artefacts.
On the same street is Bandung’s
oldest hotel. Originally built in
1870 as Societeit Concordia, the
hotel was revamped and expanded
in 1937. Upon completion in 1939,
the name was changed to Savoy
Homann. Featuring Dutch art
deco-colonial architecture, the
historic hotel is perfect for those
seeking a laid-back sanctuary.
Braga Street was the most
famous address during the golden
age of the Dutch Indies. Today, the
street can be seen as an outdoor
museum of architectural styles.
and now serves as the offi ce of
West Java province’s governor. The
design of the building’s central
pinnacle evokes the shape of
Indonesia’s satay dish. In 1925, it
was the only big building in the
NATURE REVELRY
Bandung is also dubbed the City of
Flowers owing to her beautiful landscape.
On our way to Lembang, the highest
point of Tangkuban Perahu Mountain, we
visit Dago Tea House. This cultural park
is basically a tea plantation featuring a
restaurant serving authentic Sundanese
(West Javanese) cuisine and its own tea.
While enjoying the beauty of the
panoramic landscapes, we have Sundanese
teh po ci (hot tea from a clay teapot),
bandrek and bajigur. The last two are
traditional drinks made from various local
ingredients that warm your body. The
drinks are also best paired with fried corn,
which you can buy from street vendors on
the way to Lembang.
En route, The Peak Resort Dining
sits on the highest hill of Girindah and
off ers European dishes. The restaurant is
surrounded by the beautiful spectacle of
the mountains of Tangkuban Perahu and
from food stalls to fi ne-dining eateries. The
locals we encounter tell us there are more
than 500 places serving a wide array of
cuisines, from traditional Bandung fare to
Chinese and European cuisine.
There are also dozens of Chinese food
restaurants spread over the city. One of the
most famous is Queen, a semi fi ne-dining
eatery that serves a variety of authentic
Chinese dishes. And those in search of
upscale Western dining should reserve a
place at either The Wind Chime or
The Peak.
Coff ee lovers should not leave Bandung
without paying a visit to Kopi Aroma.
Located on the corner of Banceuy Street in
the city’s old Chinatown, this art deco-style
shop produces and sells what people say
is arguably one of the best coff ee blends
in Bandung — if not the archipelago. “We
produce our own coff ee blends, using the
same grinder machine and roasting tools
that my father used since he fi rst opened
the shop in 1933,” says Widya Pratama, the
SHOPPING NIRVANA
Bandung houses the country’s
brands centralising their
production here.
Cihampelas Street is the city’s
oldest centre of factory outlets,
selling everything from jeans,
shoes, T-shirts, accessories and
other apparel.
Many of Bandung’s factory
outlets have gone upmarket.
Locals tell us there are now as
many as 50 outlets spread over
the city. But note: the quality is
variable. “Some of the sales items
may be rejects, having fallen short
of export quality, but there are so
many of good quality,” says Andre,
a local who comments that many
visitors are fi nding these outlets in
Bandung a great bargain.
Rumah Mode seems to be the
hottest factory outlet and sells a
broad range of men’s and women’s
clothes. Andre says those seeking
to buy kids’ clothes should visit
Victoria and “for handbags and
shoes, you should go to Toko Diaz”.
MY JOURNEY //
have always dreamed of one
I
day walking, breathing and
touching the land where my
ancestors roamed. The only
connection to Cambodian
culture I had was through
the food my mum cooked and
the wat my family and I would
visit at New Year. One day, my
dream became reality and I
touched down at the Phnom
Penh airport with my mother,
grandfather and boyfriend Peter,
to be greeted by the humid air. The
best time to travel to Cambodia is
between November-March when
temperatures are merely warm;
otherwise it can be too hot to see
Angkor in its full glory.
We arrived in the afternoon but
still managed to try some babar
(a type of porridge with chicken,
pork or fi sh) at Psar Thmei,
Phnom Penh’s central market, and
that day, I indulged in prawns
barbecued to perfection with
banchau (omelette with pork and
beansprouts served over fresh
salad and peanut fi sh sauce).
My style is to mix it all up in a
big porcelain bowl and drench
the mixture in the peanut fi sh
sauce — this is one of my absolute
favourite meals of all time. This
one was even better than my
mum’s version and that is pretty
hard to beat.
When night descended, I found
myself lingering along the Tonle
Sap footpath. Here, I found heaps
of food stalls and tried everything
I could fi t in my hands. Phnom
Penh really comes to life at night;
we drove along Sisowath Quay
towards the Naga Casino. I was

Phnom Penh appeared surreal,
eccentric and fl amboyant — a
complete contrast from the Pol
Pot years. My mum, Peter and I
stopped at Naga and had a couple
of fancy cocktails.
A tour is the best way to cover
a lot of ground in a short time.
Venture out to the Killing Fields
situated 15km from central
Phnom Penh. Here at Choeung
Ek, thousands fell during the
Khmer Rouge regime. While
here, remember to keep your
voice down and wear appropriate
clothing to demonstrate respect.
We visited Phnom Tamao, a
that Cambodian monkeys are
character but still valued among
Khmers. She told me a story of
a monkey (swar) that set her
neighbour’s house on fi re. It got
hold of a lighter and that was the
end of the house and the monkey.
After dinner, we headed out to
The Heart of Darkness nightclub,
which plays the latest English
traditional Khmer music. Locals
love the fl aming shots (I had fi ve).
Our friendly front desk staff
had booked us bus tickets for
Battambang, 290km from Phnom
Penh. It’s best to take the day
a visit because it captures the
essence of everyday life in rural
Cambodia. It is the second largest
city in Cambodia and where my
family is from, so it holds strong
connections to my roots for me.
Battambang has several famous
sites, including Wat Ek, an 11thcentury
temple. In the last century,
Phnom Sampeu (phnom means
‘hill’) housed the Killing Caves of
the Khmer Rouge, and the Lang
La’Coun (Punishment Cave) was
used for torture. The summit
If you’re lucky you may even see
a snake or two. We visited a local
MY EPIPHANY
I found myself lost in wonder
at children kicking their shoes
around; contented with the
simplest of games. We get lost
in a materialistic world, where
the meaning of happiness is big
brands, fl ashy cars and more
zeros in your bank account. To the
Cambodians, happiness is peace
and not war. These are a few
lessons in life we all can learn from.
Wildlife Park
We headed to Siem Reap on
the fi fth day — the pinnacle of
our trip. When we arrived, we
went shopping at Psar Chaa, the
old market, where there were
souvenirs galore.
Angkor Wat should have been
one of the wonders of the world;
it is unlike anything else you will
ever see in your lifetime. It’s hard
to believe that this inspirational
structure, built between the 9th and
13th centuries, was once lost, only to
be rediscovered in the late 1960s by
archaeologist Henri Mouhot.
Here lie untold stories and
magic, a strong testament to the
mysterious Angkorian history.
Cambodia is full of rich structural
design and an infectious beauty
with unprecedented history and
culture, and this is refl ected in the
temples of Angkor.
When you arrive, locate a
tour guide; they are found at
the entrance. Modest clothing is
essential — no bare shoulders and
legs or you will not be able to walk
up the Central Tower of Angkor.
Cambodia was every bit the
dream I had dreamt it would be. I
am already planning my next trip,
and the next trip after that.
was immediately snapped up by Front Row, Singapore’s
cutting-edge emporium for local designers. “It was
adventure destination with a host
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE
ADRENALINE-PUMPING ATTRACTIONS
IN MACAU?
Pansy Ho invited us over to Macau
to check out the tower. We were
given a beautiful brief which
was to do whatever we could to
create a unique experience at the
Macau Tower. We started with
less adventurous products to test
the market such as suspended
walkways, rock-climbing walls,
Skywalk and Sky Jump, a rapid
descent machine where customers
can jump off the tower from 233m
above the ground and descend to
the ground at 60km/h, James Bond
style. Seeing the tower was love
at fi rst sight. It was a beautifully
positioned and designed structure
and the perfect height for operating
the World’s Highest Bungy Jump,
Skywalk and Mast Climb.
HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN
AMONG ASIAN TRAVELLERS
IN PARTICULAR?
Amazing. We thought the products
we were offering would primarily
attract Western clientele, however
from the very start all products
have been very popular with the
Chinese and Japanese markets.
People from Asia are very
courageous and are eager to step
out of their comfort zone and try
something truly memorable.
HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THE
DESTINATION CHANGE IN THE TIME
YOU HAVE WORKED IN MACAU?
The biggest change has been the
transition from Portuguese to a
special administration district of
China. This change has allowed
Macau to grow and develop
into what it is today. Macau
has moved on from a back alley
gambling destination to become a
sophisticated, diverse, multicultural
destination ready to welcome all
visitors whether they are planning
on gambling or not.
DO YOU HAVE ANY NEW
ATTRACTIONS IN THE PIPELINE?
We’ve just fi nished installing
the world’s most technologically
advanced HD video system,
capturing customers’ Bungy and
Sky Jump experiences close up and
in broadcast quality. The system
took two years to develop and
offers jumpers the opportunity to
re-live their experience over and
over again from the comfort of their
living room. We also have plans
to add a giant swing and vertigo
product called ‘Xposure’ to the
Macau Tower, where customers
can step outside the tower high
above the ground and experience
vertigo in a completely safe and
controlled environment.
YU SHENG — SINGAPORE
The tradition of eating yu sheng
originated during Singapore’s
nation-building days. For Chinese
migrants, the dish was a reward
for a year’s hard work and
initiated the Chinese New Year
festivities. “It was created by the
‘Four Kings of Chinese Cuisine’
in the 1960s,” explains master
chef Steven Ng of Shang Palace in
the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore.
“These Cantonese chefs from
China thought it would be good
to have an auspicious dish to start
the year.”
They missed their provincial
appetiser of sliced raw fi sh mixed
with oil, ginger, sliced spring
onion and light soy sauce that goes
well with porridge, so together
they devised a dish that added
shredded vegetables and other
condiments to the raw fi sh slices.
Yu means fi sh, and pronounced
another way it means abundance,
and sheng means life or increase;
so the dish signifi es an abundance
of wealth and life.
SYMBOLIC YU
SHENG INGREDIENTS
FISH — abundance
LIME JUICE — luck and
PEPPER — money
VEGETABLE OIL — money
TOP LEFT/RIGHT: The
main dining hall at
Shang Palace and its
yu sheng
It is traditionally eaten on
the seventh day of Chinese New
Year to celebrate the symbolic
birthday of mankind. The fi sh
used originally was ikan parang
but as the dish gained popularity,
restaurants off ered options like
salmon and garoupa.
Senior executive chef Li Man
from Tung Lok Restaurants
explains: “The type of ingredients
in our yu sheng will symbolise the
current animal year. Since next
year is the Dragon year, we will be
having lobster meat in addition to
the popular salmon.”
Traditionally, each ingredient is
given its own auspicious greeting
as it is added to the dish. When
they are all assembled, everyone
gathers around and tosses the
dish seven times while shouting
Perth
Nestling on the banks of the river
Swan, Perth is a city where urban
buzz and rural aesthetics co-exist
in a calming confl uence. During
our memorable week there, made
affordable by a fantastic offer
on Jetstar’s Friday Frenzy, we
experienced sun-kissed beaches,
rolling hills, majestic wildlife,
premium wines and more.
Perth has a lot to offer and we
liked the serenity of Kings Park, the
bustle of malls on Murray Street,
the mesmerising sunset off the
marvellous Cottesloe Beach and the
buzzing nightlife at Northbridge and
Subiaco. We also loved our day trip
to neighbouring Fremantle, where
we ambled among historic buildings,
ate delicious fi sh and chips by the
harbour, sipped gourmet coffee
on the famous ‘Cappuccino Strip’,
gulped refreshing beer at the Little
082
Creatures brewery and shopped for great souvenirs
(Aboriginal hand-painted boomerangs, anyone?) in
the backstreets. We were also glad that we chose to head
south to the rustic and charming Margaret River.
The highlight of our trip undoubtedly was Caversham
Wildlife Park, a friendly farm that’s home to many animals
unique to Australia, and where you can feed kangaroos,
pet wombats and pose with koalas.
Thank you, Jetstar, for such an unforgettable holiday.
About the competition
stories will be rewarded with a S$500 travel voucher in $100
Taipei
It was more than fi ve years ago since
I’d last visited Taipei. When Jetstar
posted its weekly Friday sale for
Taiwan, I jumped at the opportunity
and booked myself a trip I will
never forget.
Despite this being my second
trip to Taipei, I decided to extend
my holiday by starting with the
breathtaking Taroko National Park.
I booked myself into one of the
luxurious hotels nestling within the
national park, and was totally blown
away by the magnifi cence of the
park during the car ride up to the
hotel. Never before throughout my
countless travels have I ever been
so overwhelmed by such serenity
— woods are juxtaposed against
awe-inspiring mountains and the rush
of mountain streams.
Totally invigorated by the magic
of the national park, I headed back
to Taipei city to soak up the vibrancy
of the colourful city. Needless to say,
eating, shopping and experiencing
the best karaoke only Taiwan can
offer ended my week-long trip on
a high.
I now look forward to Friday emails
from Jetstar to take me to more
outstanding places at great value!
Thank Jetstar it’s Friday!

It’s Just Lunch professional dating specialist
Anisa Hassan takes time out of her busy day to
talk about dating, chemistry and the perils of
too much technology.
WHAT IS THE SECRET TO MAKING A GOOD MATCH?
“For over 20 years, It’s Just Lunch has been taking the stress out of
meeting that special someone. We meet with you, do a face-to-face
interview, and then hand select matches for you to meet over lunch. It’s
personalized, it’s professional and it’s fun.”
HOW MANY IT’S JUST LUNCH CLIENTS HAVE TRIED ONLINE DATING?
It is amazing to know that a large number of our clients have attempted
online dating and they found the process time consuming. Plus, it’s
incredibly hard to sift through the wheat from the chaff. That’s why after
some frustrating attempts, many eventually give up on their search.
DOES TODAY’S TECHNOLOGY MAKE COMMUNICATING EASIER?
Communication has certainly gotten easier but not necessarily better.
Nothing could replace having the physical presence of a person sitting
across the table and sharing a great conversation over a meal. Genuine
connection happens when the five senses are fully engaged. There’s only
so much that a smiley face can do relative to the touch of the hand of
someone you like.
• Those who participate in vigorous physical exercise like marathons are also at
In most individuals, sudden death can be prevented if you have your
heart checked!
to detect blockage of the heart arteries and is the first in the Asia
Pacific region with a scientific published paper showing high
accuracy of CT Coronary Angiography.
BEST BREAKFAST: If you
aren’t enjoying the awesome
breakfast at Boao Inn B&B, you
might want to try your local Laoba
Cha. In Hainan, and in nearly every
Haikou neighbourhood, this local
institution provides fresh coffee,
meat-fi lled buns and a host of
sweet snacks. You can always
supplement it with some fresh fruit
picked up from the street stalls.
SURVIVAL TIP FOR
TOURISTS: Bring plenty
of SPF 30+ sunscreen and insect
repellant. And for some unknown
reason, Hainan people do not like
to take coins, so bring plenty of
paper money and don’t let the
sellers give you coins as change
because you won’t be able to get
rid of them on Hainan Island!
LOCAL DELICACY: My
favourite dish is anything
with Dongshan mutton: a blackwool
mountain goat fed on
camellias and orchids, and stewed,
roasted or cooked in coconut milk.
SAFETY, SECURITY & COMFORT
CARRY-ON
BAGGAGE
Liquids, aerosols or gels (LAGs)
must be in containers with a
maximum capacity of 100ml
each. Containers must be placed
in a transparent resealable
plastic bag with a maximum
capacity not exceeding one litre.
SAFETY FIRST
Please ask the cabin crew
for an infant seatbelt if your child
is under two years old. Return
the infant seatbelt to our cabin
crew upon disembarkation.
Sleeping on the aircraft fl oor is
not permitted.
Please read the safety instruction
card in your seat pocket, noting
emergency exits and location
of life jackets. Please watch the
safety demonstration prior to
take-off.
In an emergency, the crew will
give specifi c instructions. They
may speak assertively and will
require your cooperation.
SMOKING
Government regulations
prohibit smoking on all fl ights.
There are smoke detectors
in all toilets and penalties for
regulation breaches.
THE IMPORTANCE OF
BLOOD CIRCULATION
AND MUSCLE RELAXATION
DURING FLIGHTS
Compression stockings can
assist in preventing swelling of
the ankles and feet and they may
improve the blood return to the
body from the lower legs.
During your fl ight, move your
legs and feet three or four
minutes per hour, and move
about.
CABIN
PRESSURE
To “clear” your ears, try
swallowing and/or yawning
When you are fl ying with an
infant, give them a dummy or
feed them during the aircraft’s
descent. Sucking and swallowing
will help the infant equalise the
pressure in their ears
CABIN
HUMIDITY /
DEHYDRATION
Low humidity in the aircraft
cabin can cause drying of the
nose, throat and eyes and
can irritate wearers of contact
lenses. Do:
YOUR WELLBEING
• Drink water frequently.
• Drink coffee, tea and alcohol
only in moderation.
• Remove contact lenses if your
eyes are irritated.
• Use a moisturiser to refresh
skin.
JETSTAR
SECURITY
Jetstar has a strict policy
on denying boarding to
any passengers who are
inappropriate in fl ight or
on ground in comments or
behavior. Jetstar does not accept
as “jokes”. All matters are
referred to relevant authorities
