welcome
aboard!
Jetstar is growing rapidly and we have a lot to celebrate this
month. Recently we welcomed our 100 millionth passenger and
soon we’ll take delivery of our 100th aircraft; these two statistics cement
our position as one of the fastest growing airlines in the world.
It’s also a special month for Jetstar as a group of our passionate team
members head to Vietnam to participate in projects supported by our
StarKids partnership with World Vision. This partnership, formed five
years ago, raises money for families and communities in countries across
Jetstar’s network.
Our generous customers and team members have already donated
over AU$1 milllion to StarKids projects in countries including Australia,
Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam.
A team representing Jetstar, chosen for their fundraising leadership,
will visit projects that the StarKids program has been supporting. From
trivia nights in Tokyo, half-marathons in Melbourne, raffles in Singapore
and auctions in Auckland, the Jetstar team have come up with creative
ways to raise more than $20,000 for StarKids. I expect the trip will be a
life-changing experience for them, and I know they are looking forward to
sharing their experiences with their colleagues
and our customers when they return.
For me, it’s the people that make our
travels so unique, and we’re lucky now
to have the opportunity to experience
so many different cultures. Doing what
we can to support those communities
is important.
Thank you for choosing Jetstar.
An elegant, eat-all-you-can
event is an indulgent way to
greet Perth’s warmer months. The
inaugural Margaret River Gourmet
Escape has a fab location and
line-up, with lauded celebrity chefs
flying in from all over the world.
You’ll find the Gourmet Escape
Village set up in Leeuwin Estate
Winery, one of the founding
establishments in Margaret River’s
wine region. Culinary gurus like
Sydney’s Tetsuya Wakada and
Singapore’s André Chiang will be
showing off their knife-brandishing
skills while plating their trademark
dishes on the demonstration stage.
There are also Q&A sessions and
masterclasses.
When hunger pangs strike, weave
through pop-up restaurants serving
dishes like braised pork shoulder
and booths peddling samples of
all things artisanal, from chocolate
to cheese. On the more rustic end
of the scale, the “From Paddock
to Plate” section will showcase
Western Australia’s local produce.
Farmers and chefs will be on duty
to explain the farming process, and
dispense recipes that combine the
raw ingedients on show.
If you have a more extravagant
streak, fringe events such as tours of
private wine cellars and the tented
Gourmet Beach BBQ on Smiths
Beach – featuring menus designed
by chefs like Greenhouse’s Matt
The third edition of City of
Melbourne’s independent
music festival features artists like
cult British DJ Floating Points and
genre-fusing, San Francisco-based
electronic producer Eskmo. The
nine-day event brings
together a massive
line-up of artists, so the
organisers have
employed a crack team
to pull it off. “In total
there are 50 curators
involved in the
programming this year
– mostly record labels,
live music venues,
media and promoters
– but also individuals
who’ve submitted
proposals for their own
projects as part of our
Self-Made program,”
says Elise Peyronnet,
Melbourne Music
Week’s premier event
manager.
This year’s artistic
approach juxtaposes the old
and new, with cutting edge acts
performing against the backdrop
of Melbourne’s historic buildings.
“Infrastructure is an integral part
“For instance, the majestic
The location of
Where?House, the
festival’s cardinal
venue, is still shrouded
in mystery – all we’ve
learnt is that it’s an
abandoned space in
the middle of the city.
“Where?House
will turn into a
1,000-capacity concert
hall at night, with a
fully furnished café,
“There’ll also be a
of Melbourne’s best-loved
The Chaser guys are back
on television, this
time with a
comedy game
show The
Unbelievable
Truth
I like humour
that’s edgy or
uncomfortable,
and makes you
think
Tell us
abouT your
new show.
The Unbelievable
Truth is a comedy
game show where you try to
spot weird facts hidden in totally
made-up stuff. For example, if I told
you Queen Elizabeth was given
a pair of washing-up gloves by
Margaret Thatcher and a pair of
boxing gloves by Muhammad Ali,
which would you guess is true? It’s
the washing-up gloves. Apparently
the Queen does her own washing
up, so the Iron Lady gave her rubber
gloves. The heavyweight champion
offered Her Majesty boxing gloves,
but she said, “We already have a
pair for our kickboxing class.” On
the show, four comedians try to spot
unbelievable truths hidden amid
funny lies. I used to be a lawyer,
so hiding the truth comes very
naturally to me.
Describe your sense
of humour.
I like to think I have a broad sense
of humour, but then again I also like
to flatter myself. I’ve always liked
comedy that makes a good point,
which is why I like programs like
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
and Stephen Colbert’s The Colbert
Report. Coming from The Chaser,
it’s probably no surprise that I also
like humour that’s a bit edgy or
uncomfortable, and makes you think.
who is ausTralia’s all-Time
funniesT comeDian?
Barry Humphries. He’s a superb
writer and an amazing performer
who makes smart comedy that is
also popular and riotously funny.
The Unbelievable Truth airs on Channel Seven
from late October. http://au.tv.yahoo.com
the gossip » takeoff
why Do you chaser Guys
KeeP worKinG ToGeTher?
We keep working together because
when you combine the abilities
of the six of us, it adds up to one
mediocre comedian. We’ve been
working together since 1999, and
one of the things about working in
a group is that we’re very tough on
each others’ work. And while that
means that we all hate each other,
and these days only communicate
through lawyers, it does tend to
improve the standard of what we do.
if you’D chosen a DifferenT
career PaTh, whaT woulD iT
have been?
I would have stayed on as a lawyer.
I used to work in employment law,
helping to make sure workers were
treated fairly. The best help I ever
gave workers with employment law
problems was getting out of the law
so they could get a proper lawyer.
Australia raises the bar with its
new wave of gastropub menus
Australia’s gastropub
Keith Austin, the editor of The
won’t break the bank.
“It’s a phenomenon that’s been on
three or four years,” says Austin.
At the apex of the movement
is Melbourne’s iconic Builders
Arms Hotel in Collingwood, where
celebrated chef Andrew McConnell
has opened two new eateries already
packed with diners: a bistro with its
own dry ageing room and a seasonal
focus, and an intimate fine-dining
restaurant called The Moon
under Water. The latter, featuring
a weekly-changing
four-course tasting
menu, has been
particularly praised.
McConnell named
The Moon under Water
after a fictitious pub
described by George Orwell,
which details numerous criteria that
his ideal watering hole should abide
by. “Most of those qualities we’ve tried
to implement,” says McConnell, citing
informed and friendly service, garden
dining, a relaxed atmosphere and
“very refined, smart, bistro-style food”.
Among Sydney’s top pub
restaurateurs is Irish chef Colin
Fassnidge, who assumed the helm
at Paddington’s Four in Hand hotel
several years ago, and turned its
restaurant into an award-winning
destination. This year, he also added
Oxford Street’s Paddington Arms to
his pub food stable.
“In a way the whole gastropub
thing made me angry,” he says,
It’s all about
simple food,
good value
and cooking
food well
explaining that
from the beginning,
he operated the
Four in Hand in
the same way he
would any fine-dining
restaurant. “Some people
gave me grief because it was in
a pub,” he recalls. He didn’t pay the
adjoining bar much attention until
the global financial crisis hit and
his fine-dining patronage halved.
In an attempt to address this, he
upped the food quality at the bar –
serving the likes of crumbed pig’s
tail with celeriac rémoulade, roast
bone marrow, and corned beef with
braised fennel – and substantially
beefed up his bottom line.
Fassnidge says pub dining has
become more accomplished as
diners have come to know and
expect more. Now, he says, it’s all
about simple food, good value and
cooking food well. “And it’s not hard
to cook well, really,” he adds.
wonder
wall
Fleur Bainger camps
overnight on the Great
Wall of China
My body is stiff, my hips are bruised
and my hair is a tumbleweed, but
the view from my unzipped tent
makes it all worthwhile. I’ve spent
the night camping on the Great
Wall of China. I’ve travelled more
than three hours from Beijing to
Jiankou to visit a beautiful, timeworn
strip of the Wall that is well
away from the more accessible,
restored sections.
I didn’t sleep much last night. My
bed was a thin foam mattress laid
on hard stone, the air was thick with
humidity and mosquitoes. But my
complaints are nothing compared
to the suffering of the people who
actually built the wall. It’s thought
that one million people died during
its erection.
“You could call this China’s
largest cemetery,” says Liu Jianjun,
aka “Jack”, my English-speaking
tour guide.
While tourist-heavy sections
of the wall, such as Badaling and
Mutianyu, have been renovated to
show what the wall was like
in its heyday, Jiankou’s
degraded stretches reveal
its layered past. As we
trek a short, ragged
section, I am in awe of
this age-old rampart.
Sometimes, even if you’re
tired and sore, you feel
lucky to be a traveller.
COLOUR
Today’s amazing. Just take a look around you. You can
connect with the world at the click of a button. You can
buy flowers online, then smell them for real minutes
later, or talk to your aunt in China whilst messaging
with mates in Melbourne.
Pretty amazing right?
Telstra believes in the power of connection, because a
life connected to everything and everyone you love is a
life lived in full colour. That’s why we’ve built Australia’s
fastest and most reliable national mobile network, and
why we’re enhancing our mobile network with 4G. 4G will
let you multitask with ease. Plus you can upload and
download at faster speeds in more places than on any
other mobile network in Australia.
We’re also developing the connected home. Imagine
downloading your media at even greater speeds and
then being able to enjoy it from a completely connected
living environment.
And that’s just the beginning.
But if you really want to make the most of your
connections today and into the future, you’ll need the
network that’s been designed for them. Because the
world is as amazing as you want it to be. And amazing
is just a click away.
4G speeds are currently available in all capital cities, associated airports and selected regional locations
and will automatically switch over to our fastest 3G speeds available in other coverage area.
Telstra 4G: Typical download speeds of 2Mbps to 40Mbps are available in all capital CBD’s (meaning within 5km from GPO), associated airports and selected regional
locations (3km from regional town centres). Outside these areas, 4G capable devices will automatically switch over to Telstra’s advanced High Speed Packet Access or HSPA
enabled 3G network and speeds will be less. Actual speeds vary due to factors such as location, distance from the base station, local terrain, user numbers, hardware &
software configuration and download source/upload destination. The spectrum device is a trade mark of Telstra Corporation Limited.

Q: WHAT DO YOU LOVE
ABOUT SYDNEY?
A: The beach and the city sit side by
side — it’s the best of both worlds.
You can stroll the streets of Newport
on the Northern Beaches, kick back
under the Norfolk pines by the
waves, or hang with city folk and
boogie down until sun up.
Q: SECRET PLACE TO STAY?
A: Barrenjoey House at Palm Beach
— it’s low-key and chilled.
Q: WHERE TO EAT?
A: Breakfast: Boat House, Palm
Beach. After eating breakfast
overlooking the water you can walk
up to the Palm Beach lighthouse.
Lunch: Kawa on Crown Street,
Surry Hills. You can sit and watch
the world go by, and the salads and
sandwiches are rad!
Dinner: Mexicano, North
Narrabeen. It’s an awesome new
Beach, run by locals.
Q: WHERE TO GO OUT?
A: Shady Pines, Darlinghurst:
Have a few whiskies to warm your
spirits and feel like you’re lost in a
log cabin in the middle of nowhere.
505, Surry Hills: A hidden livemusic
and you never know what might
The Flinders, Surry Hills: An
awesome, chilled pub that’s open
late, with good tunes and good
drinks. Definitely somewhere to roll
in past 10pm.
Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE
I’ve never been one for holidays.
I don’t trust brochures. I’m not a
romantic and I’m a hard sell for a
holiday for a destination’s sake. I
live in Central Australia, a worldfamous
destination, and would often
wryly smile at the international
tourists meandering around Alice
Springs as they crossed it off their
bucket list. It’s a beautiful place, but
no more or less special than any
place on Earth, surely?
My youngest son Albert and I
were standing in front of a travel
agency in Adelaide, waiting at a
set of traffic lights, when a poster
of Fiji caught my eye. Can there
really be such a place? I’d had a
tough, exhausting year, juggling
comedy with my family, and I was
42
fijian
remedy
Comedian Fiona O’Loughlin
found that a holiday in the South
Pacific is a wonderful panacea
“Let’s go to Fiji.” “Really?” “Why not?”
“Can we?” “Of course we can.” We did.
tired beyond belief. I had not had a
holiday for 15 years. Something in
me was mesmerised by the
white beaches in the
poster, the blue ocean.
“Let’s go to Fiji,” I
blurted.
I shudder at
the thought of
having missed that
poster, and I seized
the opportunity on a
complete whim. Until my
dying day, my Fijian holiday
with my two youngest kids will be
one of my most deliriously happy
memories.
Three weeks later, we took off for
Fiji from Sydney on Jetstar – just
me and my beloved “bear cubs”.
Three weeks
later we took
off for Fiji from
Sydney on
Jetstar
From the second we landed, Albert,
Mary-Agnes and I knew that we were
on to something. Time stood still, as
if we had stepped into a brochure.
We sailed, we snorkelled, we ate, we
laughed, we stopped and took the
time to truly understand
how lucky we were. For
the first time in so
long I felt the weight
of the world lift from
my shoulders.
I’m on a holiday!
This is how it’s
supposed to feel! This
is what a holiday is!
It’s three years since our
Fijian escape, but it wouldn’t
matter if it were 20 years, because
I take it with me wherever I go. I
had no idea that a holiday is an
investment for life. No matter what
happens to any of us anywhere, any
time, we will always have Fiji.
“
Gyton? What kind of name is
Gyton?” So asks a character
played by actor Gyton
Grantley in the short film Being Carl
Williams, which was a finalist in the
2009 Tropfest competition.
Only a year before, much of
Australia wondered the same thing.
And, like the protagonists of the
short, many of us were having
trouble separating Grantley from
a character he was playing on a
television series. The show was
Underbelly and the character was
the late Carl Williams, a Melbourne
criminal who at the time was alive
and serving a life sentence.
Despite having graduated from
the Australian actors’ finishing
school that is the soap opera – think
Home & Away and Headland – and
having a CV peppered with stage
work and feature films such as
Danny Deckchair, people thought
of him as, well, “You know, that guy
from that show…”
That all changed on February
13, 2008, when the first episode
of Underbelly aired. Grantley’s
portrayal of Williams would
eventually win him a Logie Award.
Grantley’s masterstroke was making
viewers care (even if just slightly)
for this convicted killer.
Grantley’s evolution from nice
guy to crim and back again is all the
more remarkable when you meet
him in person. The Carl Strut is a
gangly amble, the eyes more puppy
than parolee, the sneer a smile. On
a picture-perfect day in his home
suburb of Bondi, Grantley is a man
as comfortable in his own skin as
that of the characters he inhabits.
While Underbelly has become
one of the most successful
franchises in Australian TV history,
Grantley’s career has seen a similar
ascendancy. Still indulging his love
for short-film projects and the stage,
he has also starred in Australian
war film Beneath Hill 60, Balibo,
the thriller The Reef and SBS crime
series East West.
In his role as Kane Albert on
Channel Nine’s drama House
Husbands (the first season of which
ends this month), the 32-year-old
notches up an Australian TV first –
playing a gay parent.
“In this role, I’ve tried to
highlight that a person’s sexuality
has no bearing on their capacity
to be a father, or as a partner in a
relationship,” he says. “That said,
I never wanted the character of
Kane to be defined by his sexuality.
Whether I’m playing an overweight
serial killer or a gay dad, I ask what
the character wants out of life and
how he is going to go about getting
these things.”
So what’s it like having such a role
now, at a time when gay rights are
so hotly debated?
“I think it’s important that
homosexual people are as visible on
television as they are in the rest of
society,” Grantley says. “The show
doesn’t make a big deal about it,
because it is simply not a big deal.
Especially in a society where the
idea of a ‘conventional family’ is
becoming redundant.”
House Husbands, which also
stars another Underbelly star, Firass
Dirani, has recently been renewed
for a second series, to screen in 2013.
Grantley is looking forward to again
exploring contemporary fatherhood
through his character. But such
challenges won’t be featuring in the
single Grantley’s off-screen life – at
least not right now.
“Having a family is something
I’ve always wanted,” he says.
“Pretending to be a father has added
fuel to the fire of cluckiness.”
Grantley’s next project is TV
movie Cliffy, which tells the story
of legendary ultra-marathon runner
Cliff Young. After which it’s back
to shooting House Husbands in
Melbourne.
Before that, though, the former
Queenslander will spend summer
by the beach he has called home
for 10 years. Bondi caters to
Grantley’s love of surfing, fishing
and photography. It’s also perfect
for another of his pastimes: people
watching. “It may be a gesture, tone
of voice or turn of phrase, but I’m
fascinated by how people behave,”
Grantley says. “Like
many actors, I’ll
see someone do
something and lock
it away to use in
a role.”
But if you want to be as close to the
FIRST STOP: HO CHI MInH CITy
The hustle and bustle of Old Saigon
is a shock to the senses. There’s a
constant rush of people, motorbikes,
and loud, beeping horns. Delicious
aromas waft up from the street
stalls, as do some smells that aren’t
quite so appetising.
I can’t wait to get among it all.
Before I left Australia, I was given
insider tips from my friend and
fellow chef Luke Nguyen of Red
Lantern restaurant in Surry Hills.
His TV show about the Vietnam
food scene, Luke Nguyen’s Vietnam
[first screened on SBS in 2010] was a
major inspiration for my journey.
First stop: Ben Thanh market. It’s
even more intense than I imagined.
I pass tanks of live seafood ready
to be grilled over hot coals and
mountains of chillis, garlic, gai lan
(broccoli), water spinach, coconuts
and farm-fresh vegetables – all
the basics for great Vietnamese
cooking. Live chickens amp up the
noise levels in the market.
The next day, I take a guided
tour of the Cu Chi Tunnel – an
underground network of Viet
Cong passages that was a base for
several military campaigns during
the Vietnam War. It’s strange to
squeeze through the openings of
these underground mazes, the site
of many a gory ambush.
Over the next few nights, I dine
out in local restaurants. The menus
in Vietnam are long, with dishes
featuring the staples squid, prawns,
sea bass, pork and wok-tossed
zucchini flowers. My favourite
is Cuc Gach Quan, an old-style
Vietnamese restaurant in an old
shophouse. Their caramelised chilli
squid is beautiful, and so is the fresh
passionfruit juice.

SEvEn DAyS On THE MEkOnG
I board the river cruiser Jahan
for a seven-night meander up the
Mekong. It’s a gorgeous old wooden
boat modelled on the boats of the
British East India Trading Company.
First stop is a town called Cai Be.
We hop off our boat and onto a junk
to visit the floating markets. There
are boats full of green papaya, green
pineapples (picked before they are
ripe), coconuts, jicamas (turnip-like
vegetables) and rambutans.
At the market, an elderly
Vietnamese lady teaches me the
intricacies of hand-making ricepaper
rolls the traditional way. It’s
an amazing skill – one that would
take me a fair bit of practice.
From Cai Be we cross the border
into Cambodia and dock at the little
town Chau Doc. The Jahan has an
onboard chef, so I head off with
him on a tour of the local market.
Locals here speak a combination
of Cambodian and Vietnamese,
which makes conversing tricky. But
it’s worth negotiating the language
barrier because it’s a bountiful
local market with the freshest of
vegetables. We purchase winged
beans, chickens, jicamas, lotus
root, okra, prawns, betel leaves and
coconuts. I turn these ingredients
into a fresh winged-bean, coconut,
prawn and chicken
salad for the boat
guests.
Next stop is
Phnom Penh,
capital of
Cambodia. It’s a
a couple of hours spare and wander
on this trip.
Hard as it is to do, during the day
I venture out to visit the beautiful,
peaceful temple complex of Angkor.
The centrepiece, Angkor Wat, is the
highlight for me – it’s where Lara
I spend my final day in Cambodia
Bangkok is rapidly gaining ground
as one of the premier fashion hubs in
Asia with the emergence of several
international designers on the
global scene. And it’s not just the
runways where Thais are leaving
their mark. While the “Big Mango”
still retains many elements of
its Eastern charm, many of
the steamy city’s youth have
embraced Western fashion while
also looking to Bangkok’s many
local markets to give their look
its own unique twist.
To the trained eye of a
fashionista, two main trends can be
spotted on the city’s bustling streets
and in its numerous shopping malls
and markets: high-end designer
labels or the vintage, retro look.
The affluent “hi-so” (Thai slang for
high society) can often be seen
in the Ratchaprasong District
(home to Siam Paragon,
Central World and more
high-end malls), sporting
designer labels that are as
much a symbol of social
status as an expression
of style. Across town
at Chatuchak Weekend
Market, a more DIY retro look
reigns supreme as Thai youth
scour second-hand clothing stalls
to mix and match their wardrobe
on a budget. This retro fashion is
an extension of the Thai hipsters’
obsession with antique and vintage,
which is currently considered the
pinnacle of cool among Thai youth.

My seven-year-old, the surfer. It’s a talent she
never knew she had and probably would
never have discovered had it not been for
the instructors at Wave House Sentosa, the indoor surf
centre on Singapore’s Sentosa Island.
the Wave House
"After lots of prActice
at kneeling, then standing
on a board, I stood trembling
waiting to ‘ride’ the fAst
moving surge of water”
They offered an irresistible
combination of patience,
encouragement and good-natured
humour to steer my two daughters
and myself through an hourlong
encounter with the “Double
FlowRider”, the smaller of two
impressive artificial waves on offer
at the centre. Iris, nine, needed little
encouragement; her younger sister,
Eden – frozen in terror on her first
attempt at standing up on a board
– needed lots; I very nearly didn’t
even try.
But eventually, after lots of
practice at
kneeling, then
standing on
a board while
holding on to
a rope, I stood
trembling
waiting to “ride”
the surprisingly
fast-moving surge of water. I wanted
to flee, but there was no escape, so
I did it, staying upright for a full 10
seconds before wiping out.
The Wave House was the
unexpected hit of our first family
day out at this hugely popular island
playground just half a kilometre
off the south coast of Singapore. A
cross between a mini-Disneyland
and a resort, Sentosa is like an
enormous toy box overflowing with
activities to keep kids occupied. You
can get them flying (without wings)

on an indoor skydive, screaming
their lungs out with excitement
on a 450m-long zip line at Imbiah
Hill, or clamouring for more at the
movie-set themed rides of Universal
Studios Singapore.
Critics carp at how artificial the
island is, that it’s overdeveloped
and cheesy. They’re missing the
point. From the moment we stepped
into the cable car at HarbourFront
Place for a stately descent down
to Sentosa over the water (you
can also take the monorail from
VivoCity mall), I just knew the
family was in for a smooth, seamless
ride. At Imbiah Lookout, where we
disembarked, smiling staff were
at the ready with maps and advice
about what to see and do. The
well-signposted roads between
attractions were lined with lanky
coconut palms and blossoming
tropical shrubs.
Yet life here hasn’t always been
quite so beguiling. Once known
as Pulau Blakang Mati (“Island of
Death from Behind”), the place
languished as a swampy, malariastricken
backwater and occasional
pirate hideout until the British
turned it into a military fortress
in the late 1800s. During World
War II, following the Allied Forces’
surrender in 1942, the island became
a Japanese PoW camp. A new lease
of life began in 1967, when the newly
independent Singapore government
decided to develop the island as a
holiday resort. In 1972, the newlook
resort was launched with the
name “Sentosa”, after a Malay word
meaning “peace and tranquility”.
Today – in the year of its 40th
sudoku
Grab a pencil, put on your thinking cap and join the craze!
The objective of sudoku is to fill in
the missing squares so that each
row, column and 3x3 box contains
the numbers 1 through to 9. To get
you started, here are a few tactics…
Scan each horizontal and vertical
band consisting of three 3x3 boxes.
It’s often easiest to start in a spot
with the most numbers already
given. If you can find the same
number in two rows, you know
that number must be in the third
6 5
2
9 1 2
4 3 1
3 6 1 7
1 5 8 3
2 4 3 6
1 9 5
9 2 5 7 8
9
(the same goes for columns). Now
see which intersecting rows and
columns can be eliminated because
they also contain that number. (This
method is called slicing and dicing.)
Some sudoku fans like to pencil in
possible answers in the corners of
individual squares. Once you have
a few numbers filled in, you may
also find it handy to jot down a list
of missing numbers for each row,
column and box.
Brett foxley-Conolly, flyIng operatIons
development manager (melBourne/
jetstar pIlots
Is It more fun
to take off or
land a plane?
A: Landing is
certainly more fun
and rewarding for
a pilot, especially when it results
in a smooth touchdown. During a
landing, the pilot has to consider
external elements as the aircraft
approaches the airport. The wind
can push the aircraft away from the
runway, while turbulence means the
pilot has to work harder to keep the
aircraft in the correct position. Rain
or cloud can reduce the pilot’s vision.
The landing involves reducing the
aircraft’s rate of descent to nearly
zero just above the runway surface,
while contending with turbulence
and cross winds. Some landings
can be challenging, and make pilots
draw on all their skills.
When they’re picked up at the
airport, passengers are often asked,
“How was the landing?”
ask us a question!
Thanks to the work of World Vision, a Cambodian teenager
and his HIV-positive mother no longer face discrimination
Y
“
ou are the son of HIV and
AIDS! Go away, don’t play with
us!” Sarath, 17, has sad memories
of when the other children in his
village excluded him because his
mother is HIV-positive.
Sarath’s mother, Sokhorn, lovingly
told her son to ignore them all and
focus on his studies. “I obviously
love my mother,” Sarath says. “I want
to study hard to become a teacher. I
want to see my mother smile.”
Sarath and Sokhorn were isolated
by their community because of her
HIV status. “Once I got sick and
my mother had no money, so she
begged our neighbours to borrow a
small amount to buy medicine for
me. Nobody lent my mother any
money because she lives with HIV,”
Sarath recalls.
Things began to change for
Sarath and Sokhorn when World
Vision started supporting their
community through the Community
Care for Children project. Supported
by StarKids, the project works to
improve the quality of care and
support for vulnerable children like
Sarath and their families.
World Vision has worked with
community leaders to ensure they
understand the difficulties that
face people living with HIV, and
have helped to set up community
support groups that actively support
families like Sarath’s. These small
groups help connect HIV-affected
families to health services, allow
them to receive anti-retroviral
treatment and ensure they receive
their legal entitlements.
World Vision also conducts
HIV- and AIDS-awareness
campaigns in the community that
have been effective in helping to
stop discrimination. “Everyone
in my community now seems to
understand. All those who used
to discriminate against my mother,
they are friendly to us now,”
smiles Sarath.
end their
weekends at
Salt House –
it boasts the
best views,
cocktails and
tapas in town
Best day trip from the city
Pack the car with a picnic basket
and explore Cairns’ most stunning
beaches. Don’t forget to check out
Trinity Beach, Palm Cove and – of
course – Port Douglas.
Most beautiful view
Take a stroll along Cairns Esplanade.
The area is also steeped in cultural
history, and you can learn all about Ye-
I-Nie, the last King of Cairns, through
a series of outdoor displays.
Most unique tourism
experience
Splurge on a private reef experience. It
includes a helicopter ride to a private
reef pontoon followed by a snorkelling
session, five-star service and lunch.
Why Cairns is awesome
Besides the weather and the people,
I love Cairns because of the friendly
culture. Cairns is a city of restaurants,
bars, cafés and easy-going people. It’s
the perfect place to relax and unwind.
Best brunch
It would have to be Rehab Café on
Lake Street, a stone’s throw from the
CBD. They serve a range of rustic
breakfast options as well as delicious
coffee.
Look like a local
During the summer, always remember
to place a coaster over your beer
glass. This will stop the raindrops
from spoiling your drink during any
tropical showers.
you
need to
know
My winter
tip would
be to pack a
lightweight
jacket for the
slightly cooler
temperatures
jamie mitchell
Jamie Mitchell, 35, is a 10-time winner of the Molokai
to Oahu Paddle Board championships and was
crowned winner of the Biggest Paddle-in Wave in the
Australian Big Wave Awards 2012. World surfing
champion Kelly Slater namechecks him as one of his
personal heroes. Jamie talks us through his passport:
Q: HOW MANY PASSPORTS HAVE YOU HAD?
A: I am onto my third now.
Q: HOW MANY STAMPS ARE IN
YOUR PASSPORT?
A: I have travelled so much I’ve lost count of
exactly how many. They have all been full.
Q: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST
OVERSEAS DESTINATION?
A: Bali, Indonesia.
Q: DO YOU REMEMBER MUCH ABOUT IT?
A: I remember being mesmerised by how
different the culture was to home. The traffic,
food and the smell were all different from
Australia. It was such an eye-opener. I also
remember the surf was really good.
Q: FAVOURITE AUSTRALIAN CITY?
A: The Gold Coast, Queensland. Great waves,
great weather, great nightlife. It’s the place I call
home. It is only one hour to Brisbane, two hours
to the Sunshine Coast and 40 minutes to Byron
Bay. Pretty hard to beat.
Q: BEST AUSTRALIAN TOWN?
A: Coffs Harbour, NSW. It’s where I grew up.
Q: ULTIMATE HOLIDAY DESTINATION?
A: Hawaii, for sure. I have been there so
many times. I have so many great friends and
memories from there.
Q: FAVOURITE ASIAN CITY?
A: I would have to say Hoi An in Vietnam. Great
food, people, culture and nightlife.
Q: HAVE YOU BEEN TO NEW ZEALAND?
A: I went to a little town called Piha, for a
surf competition (find out more at piha.co.nz).
Q: WHICH JETSTAR DESTINATION IS AT THE
TOP OF YOUR WISHLIST?
A: Tokyo. I haven’t been to Japan yet and I’ve
heard it’s an amazing city!
The Gold Coast
has great waves,
great weather,
great nightlife.
It’s the place I
call home
