ELEPHANT TRUNK HILL The magnetic appeal of Guilin does not just lie in its scenery. Its allure can also be explained by the strong local belief in mythology. You cannot help but be fascinated by those stories of fantastical creatures and divine deities. A prime example of a venerated myth is the Elephant Trunk Hill. Located on the western bank of the Li River, the hill stands proud as a symbol of the city. If you’re pondering about its peculiar name, just look at the hill from afar for insight. You will see the unmistakable outline of an elephant with its trunk submerged in the water. “According to the legend, this elephant was once a god who refused to return to the heavens. One day, while it was drinking from the river, the other gods decided to plunge a sword down the top of its head. That was its punishment for its non-compliance,” explains Wei Xiang, a tour guide and director from the Guilin Municipal Tourism Bureau. For a closer look of the hill, take a boat through the Water Moon Cave. The semiround cave opening, which is penetrated by water, can be found between the trunk and legs of the elephant. When this opening is viewed along with the inverted refl ection of the cave in the water, the shape of a full moon can be seen. To experience this phenomenon that inspired the cave’s name, stay past sunset on a moonlit night. The sight is nothing short of magical.
