Most unusual thing to do: Rent a motor-pedicab and do a city tour. Go to Maimoon Palace, Grand Mosque and Tjong a Fie Mansion in the Kesawan area. Best breakfasts: Soto medan (chicken soup) at Sinar Pagi on Jalan Sei Deli. Even though this place is traditional and simple, the food here is really delicious and relatively cheap. Another one to try is Dim Sum Ayong — well known because of its homemade dim sum. Great places for dinner: The Traders on Jalan Kapten Pattimura is a nice and elegant place to have dinner with your family or other half. It serves Western, Japanese and Indonesian food. Behind the restaurant is Shoot, where you can play pool and listen to live music. Or try Nelayan, a Chinese restaurant that serves modern dim sum. Best nights out: Retrospective pub, with DJ performances and live music by local and foreign bands. Or try Entrance The Music Temple, a brand-new pub at Grand Aston Hotel Medan. Best place to party with the gang: K2 Karaoke, which has KTV rooms for four to 20 people. I love Medan because: It’s a food paradise. We also have the biggest lake in Indonesia, the lovely Lake Toba, just four hours away from Medan. SURABAYA INDONESIA Indonesia’s second-largest city may not come to tourists’ minds instantly, yet it is a veritable hotbed of commerce, industry and food — and the gateway to East Java’s charming attractions. Must-eats: Rujak cingur (fruits and vegetables with beef snout) and petis (chilli shrimp sauce). I like the one on Jalan A. Jaiz. It’s rather expensive, but defi nitely worth it. Next, the shrimp rice of Bu Rudy on Jalan Dharmahusada. The fi ve-yearold restaurant has gained much popularity among foodies. Favourite local festival: The food festival in May. Many traditional foods are presented, such as rujak cingur, lontong kupang, lontong balap, nasi rawon — to name a few. For history: Kampung Arab, Ampel, or China Town in Jepun. Tanjung Perak is also worth a visit if you want to see traditional boats, called phinisi. Most unusual thing to do: Rafting on River Pekalen, Probolinggo, four to fi ve hours from Surabaya.
