Compared to L’Ardia, an
ancient horse race taking place in
Sardinia from 6-7 July, the Grand
National seems like Crufts. Sedilo,
an elevated village of 3,000 inhabitants,
is the home of this annual feat of epic
equestrianism, which celebrates
Christianity’s victory over paganism in
312AD. The village’s best and bravest
horsemen compete in a dirty, dusty
and occasionally aggressive gallop
around the grounds of the Sanctuario
di San Costantino before a customary
feast of suckling pig and BBQ eels.
