JULY 2007
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
My whole year, like some of you I've met along the way, pretty much revolves around the
DCA National Specialty, in particular the National Field Events (i.e. tracking, field trial and
earthdog test.) They've become quite the habit, an addiction if you will, and yet I am pleased
to report that the more involved I've become, the even more excited I get.
The DCA National Field Trial, in particular, has developed into an extravaganza of which we
can all be proud. This year's certainly was, by most accounts, quite the crowd pleaser, with 20
lb. jackrabbits, the open (though sometimes vertical) grasslands, the photography...I think I
am safe in saying that a good time certainly appeared to be had by all.
Everyone who attends or in any way follows the nationals must always remember that the
DCA specialty events are only accomplished through the dedicated hard work of some pretty
amazing organizers/club members (all volunteers) as well as with the assistance and
generous support of individuals and clubs from all across the country. According to this year's
income statement, the 2007 field trial and earthdog tests netted DCA $1650 and $1450
respectively, and the tracking tests $550, a field events total that shows an increase of almost
$400 over 2006. These funds will help increase DCA's financial reserve to a safe level once
again, one of the club's major priorities in recent years.
We have much to be proud of for truly enviable events such as these are usually only come to
clubs as a loss. The successful development of event sponsorships and trophy donation
support allows the DCA organizers, though prudent, to be afforded the unique luxury of
comfortably handling their necessary expenses and still showing a modest net income. It
should be intuitive that we could never accomplish this if we were trying to rely on entry fees
alone.
This year, at the DCA conformation events, I was chatting with someone with decades of
involvement in DCA activities. I asked if he felt his club or region might consider matching
some of the donations made by other groups in recent years. His reply was that they had not
been aware that clubs were making these kinds of donations ($50 to as much as $150 per
event, including those of the host club) and that they had "simply never really thought about
it." I was dismayed with the realization that we have faltered (slightly) as apparently not
sufficiently recognizing past donations. We have certainly acknowledged them at the events,
usually in a catalog or the field events program, but that does not reach our entire club
membership, in particular those not in attendance. There are still those who are "not aware."
Every one and every club should be aware of the generosity of these individuals and clubs.
Should a particular group not see itself capable of making similar donations (certainly a fair
choice given today's financial pressures) at least hopefully through spreading the word we will
all be able to at least say we had "thought about it."
Every DCA 07 field event sponsor that I am aware of is listed in this Voice in another section.
Please...stand up, be recognized, and accept all of our gratitude.
As this issue of the Voice is posted the organizers of DCA 2008 (with the DCA 2009 groups
watching in the wings) are making the final preparations for what should be a truly
exceptional series of events. Please watch for the sponsorship forms and the trophy donation lists, and do consider helping
out, both through your clubs and individually. If you find that you are not able to attend the festivities this becomes one very
gracious way for you to yet remain an integral part. These activities, quite simply, would not be done, or could not be done
nearly as well, without "all y'all's" incredibly generous and continued support.
I, for one, can hardly wait until January!!!
Trial Advisory Committee Meeting
Minutes
Dixon, California
March 17, 2007
DCA members present:
Lois Ballard, Jean Dieden, Jerry & Patricia Price, Gary & Jackie Nicholas, Dennis & Selma McNamara,
Kathleen Schooler, Julie Nielsen, Diane McCormack, Sharon Carr, Vicki Ronchette, Steve & Cheryl Shultz,
Bob & Gail Page, Susan Fuller, Peter & Bonnie Mercier, Sharon McDonald, Beth and Ben Benjamine. Guests
include Jamie Sexton and Nancy Field. Arriving while meeting in progress – Larry Gohlke, Cheri Faust, Scott
Woodall, Judy Gallamore.
The meeting was called to order by chairman Jean Dieden. The TAC secretary has the agenda and is still on
his way to the meeting. We will start the meeting with review and regional reports.
Chairman's report:
TAC’s notable accomplishments during the past year:
The DCA Yahoo group was formed to promote communication between members. There are approximately
100 email addresses at this time and it is proving to be an useful tool for disseminating information.
A proposal had been made to the AKC to change the FT rules to have the event secretary hold the entry
forms instead of sending them to AKC.
Following a suggestion from the AKC, a proposal is being made to the DCA board to request a change the
rules to allow individual specialty clubs to hold up to 8 trials per year. Difficulties have been noted in hosting
regional events as there is no ability to complete the applications on line, there are liability and accountability
issues as well. Clubs would still have the ability to host regional events if desired. TAC will submit to the DCA
board a draft of a letter to AKC requesting their approval of the changes.
Regional Reports:
Region 1 – Hosting DCA 2007. The regional clubs are hosting conformation, earthdog tests, field trials,
obedience and rally trials.
Region II – Clubs Santa Ana and Sierra are sporadically hosting 4 field trials per year. They have hosted
weekends with each club holding one trial at the same location.
Entries in the open classes are increasing.
Region III – Dallas-Ft. Worth DC is ready to host DCA 2008 in conjunction with Houston. The Dallas/Ft.
Worth trials in January at Ladonia, TX were held at the proposed site of the 2008 national trials. Plans are
under way to improve the grounds so that they may be suitable for the size and scope of the national field
events.
Region IV – The Buckeye DC was formed in Ohio. Central Iowa DC is close to being licensed.
Region V – There are new clubs seeking approval to hold FT on familiar Beagle grounds. Mississippi
Dachshund Club and Cumberland Valley Dachshund Club. The cost of holding trials was discussed.
Region VI – The loss of their grounds has been an issue. Several clubs have lost sites closer to home (Long
Island, Rhode Island, New York) and are now using a site in New Jersey. Discussed the Metropolitan DC
32

and/or DCNJ considering hosting DCA 2009 conformation in October. Performance events may be held in nonconsecutive
weeks but are being discussed for the fall as well. Future events were outlined.
Future National Events:
DCA 2008 – Points earned toward the triathlon award will accumulate unchanged. The effects of the split
conformation/FT are undetermined at this time. The amount of work for host clubs over a 2 week period is
difficult at best. The availability of facilities for all events in close proximity time and distance wise is an
additional concern
DCA 2009 – See notes of Region VI.
DCA 2010 – Normal rotation would put it in Region II. Due to the fall date for 2009 the date for 2010 will
have to be April or later.
Unfinished business:
There was a discussion about the Basset Hound Club of America’s hunting hound test. It is a noncompetitive
pass/fail test. Joining in with the Bassett clubs has not worked well to date. The upper level tests expect a dog
to display pack behavior. The Basset Hound Club of America approached DCA to join in since a single breed
test would not be entertained by the AKC. The starter gun required may be in conflict with DCA’s no firearms
policy. The voicing requirement is a concern. The Petite Basset Griffon Vendeen national club is uncertain if it
will go to the AKC seeking approval of their test program. We may need to develop a different test than the
Basset hunt test that better compliments dachshunds hunting style. It was discussed if TAC should form a
committee to consider this. It would not be an AKC event. AKC is unwilling to approve any single breed tests.
It will be discussed during the next week with others and consider the responses we receive.
DCA 2006 did well financially last year. Kudos to all who worked so hard to make it so. This year will likely
be less so but should also be profitable, a point which will hopefully put our field events in good stead with the
DCA board as far as approving the programs and relaying their support from the membership. Special thanks to
all who contributed in time, effort and sponsorship.
New Business:
Following a revision of the VC program, the DCA Companion Events Committee and the Trial Advisory
Committee have recommended an "Award of Excellence" program to the DCA board, recognizing dachshunds
who earn any 3 championships with a DCA newsletter cover and a special plaque.
TAC has submitted a proposal to the DCA board to request a change to the rules allowing individual specialty
clubs to hold up to 8 trials per year
Meeting adjourned.
Julie Nielsen
