Carcharodon must be credited to Agassiz with <strong>the</strong> type Carcharodon verus AGASSIZ 1838<br />

(="Carcharias"<strong>of</strong> Agassiz 1835 illustration).The specific name verus dates from CLOQUET 1817-<br />

22, it's use not being precluded by Blainville 1816, as <strong>the</strong> latter is a nomen nudum and <strong>the</strong>refore has<br />

no standing.In 1965, <strong>the</strong> ICZN ruled that Carcharodon should date from A.Smith 1838, who<br />

designated Carcharias lamia RAF. 1810 <strong>the</strong> type, proposed as a substitute for Squalus carcharias<br />

LINN., and <strong>the</strong>refore type by monotypy.<br />
