Spot the
difference
Yayoi Kusama started to paint
using polka dots at the age
of ten. The Japanase avantgarde
sculptor, painter,
novelist and fi lm maker
headed to New York in 1957,
and was heavily involved in
the city’s thriving art scene
throughout the 1960s. She
organised ‘happenings’ such
as body painting festivals,
fashion shows and anti-war
demonstrations. Kusama
returned to Tokyo in 1973,
where she has continued to
create her wild, spotted art.
This piece, entitled Ascension
Of Polka Dots On The Trees
was an installation for the
Singapore Biennale, while her
latest project is a limitededtion
mobile phone range.
