ADAPTING A COMPLICATED
PHILLIP K. DICK STORY TO THE
BIG SCREEN ISN’T EASY, BUT
FIRST TIME DIRECTOR GEORGE
NOLFI PULLS IT OFF WITH THE
ADJUSTMENT BUREAU.
BY MICHAEL KAPLAN
Desolate cityscapes, glowering bad guys, visions
of a bleak future o en controlled by machines.
Among the thousands of dystopia fl icks released
since the early 20th century, the style is well
established, but many of the best examples of
the genre—classics like Blade Runner, Minority Report and,
now, The Adjustment Bureau—have more in common than
slate-gray skies. Many of them are adaptations of stories by
Phillip K. Dick, the prolifi c science fi ction writer who penned
44 novels and 121 short stories between 1952 and 1982.
It’s not surprising that the American writer’s brief, complicated
stories are notoriously difficult to adapt. They
were wri en a half-century ago, and many use elaborate
structures to convey ideas about death, drugs, computers,
science and the afterlife. George Nolfi, who directed and
6
wrote the screenplay for 2011’s The
Adjustment Bureau, an interpretation
of a Dick short story that centers on
fedora-wearing beings charged with
managing the fate of humans—was
hardly intimidated. “I sparked to it right
away,” says Nolfi , who also wrote scripts
for The Sentinel, The Bourne Ultimatum
and Ocean’s 12.
Despite that initial spark, Nolfi felt
that the original—a stripped-down
tale involving only one protagonist,
an insurance salesman—would need
an additional human element in order
to be compelling to viewers. So he added
a love story and had the masters of
fate try to thwart a love aff air between
a rising-star politician, David Norris
(Ma Damon), and a dancer, Elise Sellas
(Emily Blunt). “I saw it as a way of
telling science fi ction with romance,”
he says.
Nolfi also worried that Dick’s extreme
sci-fi landscape, which includes a scene
where everything is made of gray ash,
might put off some viewers. “The way
into this movie—that a bureau controls
the fate of humans—is such a crazy
idea that I felt a need to ground it into
reality as much as I could,” he says. “I
needed to make it as real as possible.”
To do this, Nolfi shot The Adjustment
Bureau on location in New York City,
rather than on a soundstage, which
created no shortage of logistical hurdles.
“Moving a full crew around the city is
not an easy feat,” says Nolfi . “We’d arrive
in the morning at the Circle Line Ferry,
bring on the equipment, shoot aboard
the boat and then move to Brooklyn for
the next scene. The desire for realism
drove that, but it was arduous.”
That desire was manifested in other,
more subtle ways. For instance, there
are no 555 phone numbers in The
Adjustment Bureau. “Those numbers
break you right out of a movie,” Nolfi
says. “I asked for a normal sounding
phone number, and I found out that
the studio had one cleared for another
movie. So we used it.”
Nolfi also used his casting choices
to add verisimilitude. He met Damon
when he was working on The Bourne
Ultimatum and fi gured that the actor,
who had li le experience with science
fiction scripts, would be perfect. “I
needed somebody who would not be
associated with this type of character,”
Nolfi says. The film had a relatively
modest budget of $50 million, and Nolfi
had no directing credits, so even though
the two had met, landing Damon wasn’t
automatic. But, Nolfi points out, he had
paid his dues in Tinseltown, which has
lent him credibility. As a screenwriter,
he spent lots of time on movie sets.
“I can’t tell you how valuable being on
the set of four sizable Hollywood movies
was,” he says. “I sat on a chair next
to industry veteran Richard Donner
[who directed Timeline, Nolfi ’s fi rst produced
script] and rode to the set with
him every morning. I did quite a bit of
rewriting during the fi lming of Ocean’s
12 and a lot on The Bourne Ultimatum,”
Nolfi adds. “So I’ve been on movie sets
for 300 days, and there was not a lot
that surprised me as a director.”
Not coincidentally, Matt Damon’s
character is a politician, an easy
character for Nolfi to write realistically
because the director/screenwriter
had been pursuing a Ph.D. in political
science at Oxford University before
selling his fi rst script. “I know politicians
and policy people, and that helped me
to write a campaign in the background
the movie,” says Nolfi. “I’ve been told
that I accurately captured the scenes
that depict him being a politician. Now,
with this movie having done well and
having been well-reviewed, I have the
confidence to find something a little
diff erent for my next project.”
Despite Nolfi’s efforts to ground
The Adjustment Bureau in reality, the
fi lm nonetheless retains much of the
mystery of the original story. Is it a
religious conceit? A commentary on
the US government? “Some people see
The Adjustment Bureau as a metaphor
for a totalitarian society,” says Nolfi . “On
the other hand, if you are interested in
science fi ction, you will view it as sci-fi .
Maybe you will see it in a political sense
or else you might see it in a religious
context. There is no answer to the question
about how much free will we have,
but if you take the idea of a bunch of
guys working for someone who controls
fate, well, then [that someone] has
to be a higher power.”
Despite having so carefully cra ed
a world around the frame le by Phillip
K. Dick, Nolfi is reluctant to offer
his own conclusions about the message
behind The Adjustment Bureau.
Cryptically, he says, “I’m leaving it open
to interpretation.”
