Bryn Terfel and Rhys Meirion were born within a few miles of eac h other among the western
foothills of Snowdonia. They are the product of a unique culture where singing – from a very
young age – is as normal as breathing, and singing competitions (in ‘Eisteddfodau’) a part of
everyday life. Both Bryn and Rhys testify to the importance of Welsh culture in their musical
upbringing, and this collection of duets is a tribute to that culture.
There are also songs from other cultures, and Bryn Terfel and Rhys Meirion are equally at home
in many genres and musical styles. To watch them in the recording studio w as to witness two
musical beings in perfect harmony –
not only do the voices match,
but their innate feeling for the songs
matches as well. And that harmony
is heard and felt throughout this
very special recording.
Two great singers from one little
corner of Wales, with a performance
that will resonate around the world.
Dwy law yn erfyn sydd yn y darlun Two hands praying are in the picture
Wrth ymyl fy ngwely i, by my bedside,
Bob bore a nos every morning and evening,
Mae’u gweddi’n un dlos, their prayer is so beautiful,
Mi wn er na chlywaf hi. I know though I cannot hear it.
Pan af i gysgu, mae’r ddwy law hynny When I fall asleep, those two hands
Tra’n gwawdio pob peryglon He scorns the name of danger
Tra’n brwydro’r ffyrnig don. and fights the angry wave.
Ein hyder yn y Nefoedd We have more trust in Heaven
5 Perhaps Love
Perhaps love is like a resting place,
A shelter from the storm.
It exists to give you comfort,
It is there to keep you warm
And in those times of trouble when y ou are most alone
The memory of love will bring you home.
Perhaps love is like a window,
Perhaps an open door.
It invites you to come closer,
It wants to show you more
And even if you lose yourself and don’t know what to do
The memory of love will bring you through.
Oh love to some is like a cloud,
To some as strong as steel,
For some a way of living,
For some a way to feel.
Some say love is holding on,
Some say letting go,
And some say love is everything,
Some say they don’t know.
Perhaps love is like the ocean,
Full of conflict, full of pain
Like a fire when it’s cold outside
Or thunder when it rains.
If I should live forever and all my dreams come true
My memories of love will be of you.
! Eli Jenkins’ Prayer
The Sunset Poem of the Rev. Eli Jenkins
from Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas
Every morning when I wake,
Dear Lord, a little prayer I make
O please to keep thy loving eye
On all poor creatures born to die.
And every evening at sun-down
I ask a blessing on the to wn,
For whether we last the night or no
I’m sure is always touch and go.
We are not wholly bad or good
Who live our lives under Milk Wood,
And Thou, I know, wilt be the first
To see our best side, not our w orst.
The Accompanists
Annette Bryn Parri is
one of Wales’ leading
and most versatile
pianists, featuring
regularly as
accompanist on
recordings, TV
programs and concerts.
As well as a soloist in
her own right, she lives
her musical life to the full as a conductor, tutor,
producer, arranger and composer. Catrin Finch
is rapidly becoming the symbol of the ne w harp
age; a masterful and adventurous harpist, her
style reflects her personality – colourful,
confident and completely natural. Celticana is a
quartet of talented young women from West
Wales who met as members of the National
Youth Orchestra of Wales, who trained as
musicians in London together, and can now
perform with great vivacity everything from the
classics to rock. Rhys Wyn Parry is one of the
most prominent musicians in the field of Welsh
popular and rock music, but his prowess as a
guitarist extends to all musical st yles, and Nigel
Hopkins is one of those rare creatures – a firstrate
instrumentalist who is also a sound
engineer and accomplished producer.
The Composers
This recording brings together the works of
many of Wales’ best composers of songs. As
well as prominent names from the past, suc h as
Joseph Parry, and more recent ones such as
Gilmor Griffiths and Ryan Davies, the songs of
four contemporary composers are featured.
Rhys Jones has recently published a new
collection of solos with his friend Aled Lloyd
Davies, one of which is included here. His
daughter Caryl Parry Jones is one of her
generation’s most productive and popular
composer-arrangers. Eric Jones is confirming his
reputation as a composer for choirs and soloists,
and Robat Arwyn, a school friend of Bryn Terfel,
is one of those rare composers who ha ve
become a legend in their own lifetime. His
Benedictus is destined to carry his reputation
far beyond the boundaries of his native land.
