also mallein, tuberculin, and tetanus anti-toxin are prepared. Researches<br />

are being conducted in the etiology of diseases affecting animals, such<br />

as rinderpest, anthrax, surra, lymphangitis epizootica, and glanders;<br />

and District board veterinary assistants from the United Provinces and<br />

the Punjab are instructed in the use of various kinds of sera. <strong>The</strong><br />

annual expenditure is about Rs. 50,000.<br />

Muktsar Tahsil (Muktesar).— Tahsil of Ferozepore District, Punjab,<br />

lying between 30 0 9' and 30 0 54' N. and 74°4' and 74 0 52' E., with an<br />

area of 935 square miles. It is bounded on the north-west by the<br />

Sutlej, which divides it from Montgomery and Lahore Districts; on the<br />

east by Farldkot; and on the south-east by Patiala. On the west is<br />

a belt of alluvial land along the left bank of the Sutlej, irrigated by the<br />

Grey Canals. <strong>The</strong> middle portion of the tahsil is a level plain with<br />

a firm soil, while north and south the country is sandy. <strong>The</strong> central<br />

and southern portions are irrigated by the Sirhind Canal. <strong>The</strong> population<br />

in 1901 was 172,445, compared with 161,492 in 1891. <strong>The</strong><br />

head-quarters are at the town of MUKTSAR (population, 6,389). <strong>The</strong><br />

tahsil also contains 320 villages. <strong>The</strong> land revenue and cesses<br />

in 1903-4 amounted to 2.7 lakhs.<br />

Muktsar Town (Muktesar),—Head-quarters of the tahsil of the<br />

same name in Ferozepore District, Punjab, situated in 30 0 28' N. and<br />

74 0 31' E., on the Fazilka extension of the Rajputana-Malwa Railway.<br />

Population (1901), 6,389. Muktsar is the largest town and principal<br />

trade mart in the west of Ferozepore District. Apart from its commercial<br />

importance, the town is chiefly noticeable for a great Sikh festival,<br />

which takes place in January. It lasts for three days, and commemorates<br />

a battle fought in 1705-6 by Guru Govind Singh against the<br />

pursuing imperial forces. <strong>The</strong>re is a large tank in which pilgrims<br />

bathe, begun by the Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and continued and completed<br />

by the chiefs of Patiala, Jind, Nabha, and Faridkot. <strong>The</strong><br />

municipality was created in 1867. <strong>The</strong> income during the ten years<br />

ending 1902-3 averaged Rs. 6,100, and the expenditure Rs. 4,900. In<br />

1903-4 the income was Rs. 6,800, chiefly from octroi ; and the expenditure<br />

was Rs. 6,200. <strong>The</strong>re is a Government dispensary.<br />

Mukurti.—Peak in the Nilgiri District, Madras. See MAKURTI.<br />

Mula.—River in Baluchistan, rising in the Harboi hills and having<br />

a total length of 180 miles. As far as Kotra in Kachhi (28° 22' N.,<br />

67 0 20' E.), it passes with a rapid fall through the Central Brahui range ;<br />

in its lower reaches many flats lie along its course. <strong>The</strong> upper course<br />

is known as the Soinda; a little lower it is called the Mishkbel, and<br />

from Pashthakhan downwards it becomes the Mula. Its principal<br />

affluents are the Malghawe, the Anjira or Pissibel, and the Ledav. <strong>The</strong><br />

Mula drains the whole of the north-east of the Jhalawan country and<br />

also the south-west corner of Kachhi. Wherever possible, the small
