The status of E. lanceolata Lea 1828 in Maryland is currently uncertain because of its cryptic nature, a lack of verified records, and the poorly understood taxonomy of lanceolate species (Johnson 1970, Bogan et al. 2009). A single specimen identified as E. lanceolata was reported from the Southeast Creek watershed in 1995, but after further scrutiny it was determined to be a misidentification. Though sampling occurred within 8digit watersheds where E. lanceolata was apparently historically and recently collected, no individuals were encountered in 2009 (Figure 11). Figure 11. Elliptio producta Conrad 1836 has previously been encountered at 11 sites throughout five watersheds (Figure 12). In 2009, they were collected five times at two additional sites (Table 1). Investigating environmental conditions coincident with E. producta was not possible at this time due to the low number of collection records with associated ecological data. Figure 12.
