3. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 3 : Proforma This offers advantages for evaluating renal blood flow, anatomy and urinary excretion. After injection of contrast gadolinium – diethylenetriamine – penta-acetic acid (DTPA), signal intensity from the region of interest of hydronephrotic kidneys differed from that of non-hydronephrotic kidneys by showing less cortical decrease, and delayed contrast excretion. These techniques are beginning to gain acceptance and hold the promise for a single study that can provide information on both perfusion and function. The evaluation of renal perfusion with MRI has become feasible with the development of rapid data acquisition techniques, which provide adequate temporal resolution to monitor the rapid signal changes during the first passage of contrast agents in the kidneys (Bennett and Li, 1997).
