Authority on Sasquatch
A candidate takes critical look at
spending and educational system
The provincial election will be
now or next spring and John Green
will be right there, challenging
Hugh Curtis's Saanich and the
Island seat.
The prospective Conservative
candidate was on Salt Spring Island
last Friday, calling on supporters
and others.
Right-hand man to party leader,
Vic Stephens and a Conservative
by birth, he was eager to
explain his stand on a variety of
aspects of provincial affairs.
Son of Howard Green, once a
minister in Diefenbaker's cabinet,
John grew up in a persuasive
Conservative atmosphere.
The Social Credit government
has attacked none of the problems
facing British Columbia, he charged.
At the defeat of the NDP
government Social Credit loudly
condemned the NDP pattern and
then copied it.
There have been no economics
in government, he told Driftwood.
He ventured a forecast that if
the province were to achieve a 5 %
cut in the provincial taxation
picture for industry, this could
result in a 5 % reduction in
provincial unemployment. Reduction
of government spending is the
No. 1 key to an improved economy,
he asserted.
He wouldn't buy zero-based
budgeting.
MODERNIZE
PROPANE
"That's gimmickry," he said.
All a shrewd politician has to do
to throw a wrench in the gears is to
introduce a couple of needless
projects during the year and their
elimination answers all the demands
of the zero budget.
HOUSING
"We'd take a look at the
ministry of housing," he told
Driftwood.
There was housing long before
there was a ministry and there is
no shortage today. Eliminate the
ministry and absorb its staff into
other areas and there is a government
economy, said Green.
Under a Conservative government
corporal punishment would
come back into the schools.
A grade one ^hijd who is
difficult is required to stay otM*?f
the room. A particularly difficult
youngster may spend most of his
first year or so outside the room
because no other form of punishment
is permissible. That student
will never master the curriculum in
later years.
Instead of punishing him physically,
you are depriving him of an
education.
He took a further look at
education.
The NDP introduced the condition
whereby a teacher enjoys a
sinecure for life, he recalled. If a
teacher is dismissed today, he can
sue the school board for vast sums
of money in compensation.
A Conservative government
would legislate authority for school
boards to dismiss teachers without
announcing reasons.
NO JEOPARDY
No teacher should be kept on
staff if the board is not satisfied.
stated.
Social Credit is running scared,
the Tory candidate is convinced.
The Premier has travelled
throughout the province on his
campaign tour, he told Driftwood
and a poll taken a year or so ago
warned the Socreds . that they
would not hold a seat on Vancouver
Island.
Green is a former newspaperman.
He was publisher of the
Agassiz Harrison Advance until he t
sold out about five years ago.
He is also a giant-killer. John
Green is the province's leading
authority on the mysterious monster
of the forests, the Sasquatch.
Send him to the Legislature and
he'll be able to find them the more
readily, he quipped.
Trustees were told at their
Thursday that the Ministry of
Education wants all school districts
in the province included in a
college district. To date the Gulf
Islands district has not been part of
any college district.
FERNWOOD Elementary
School News
It was another busy week at
school as students had to forget
Thanksgiving and look forward to
Hallowe'en.
It was really hard to concentrate
in Grade 7 this week as the whole
class looked forward to visiting the
King Tut exhibit in Seattle.
SPELL-A-THON
By Lisa White
On October 17 Fernwood Elementary
School had the Spell-A-
Thon for grades two to seven.
Grade seven words were quite
difficult but, nevertheless, three
people in the class got 100 words
out of 100 correct. Three others got
95%.
Everyone worked very hard and
got some exceptionally good marks
in turn. Now we are working hard
collecting the money from our
sponsors. All our teachers at
Fernwood organized a treat fori
their classes called "Glad the
Spell-a-thon is over" party. Most
teachers brought a cake for their
classes. Our class enjoyed date
squares and ice-cream. Many
thanks to all the people who
sponsored us and many thanks to
all Fernwood students who participated.
SOCCER TOURNAMENT
By Lyle Brown
On Thursday, Oct. 19, the
Fernwood and Salt Spring Elementary
Schools had a soccer tournament.
Eight teams competed in-the
tournament; a Fender Island team,
a Mayne Island team, two Crofton
teams, a Fernwood Elementary
team and three Salt Spring Elementary
school teams, Stallions,
Mustangs and Colts.
In the Round Robin section we
played three games without defeat.
Our first game we won 2-0 against
the Colts. The second game we
won 5-0 against the Crofton "A"
team. The third game we won 3-0
against the strong Mayne Island
Team.
We were in the semi-finals,
now, because of our wins. We had
to play the Stallions. It was a well
matched game till a scrambling
ball was kicked out and right onto a
Stallion forward's foot. He shot it
and the Fernwood goalie missed it
by a finger. We tried to catch up
and had our chances but just
couldn't put it in.
Everyone played in the four
games that we played. We gave
our best effort in all the games.
Even though we could have
beaten the Stallions it was an
enjoyable tournament.
That was the second time that
Tory Candidate John Green is
seen with his active supporter, Pat
Crofton. They were on Salt Spring
Island on Friday.
we have only conceded one goal
and still not come out winners.
All the kids that played in the
tournament got Participant Certificates.
Thanks to all the coaches,
referees and the grade 7 girls who
were running the concession stand.
