Spinstersover the age of 40 are evenless likely to marry — only 1.3 percent of these women, according tostatistics, ever become brides.Lyon said many 'experts' considerthis a major problem, andhave suggested women couldsolve it by being "nice to men."Others, she noted, are hintingthat many women will need to"set a snare or bait a trap" if theywish to marry.Lyon poked fun at the suggestion,saying it seemed to indicatewomen should hunt their mendown like wild animals. She askedthe audience, tongue in cheek, ifit might be necessary to protectmales from such activities. "Willwe have to spray paint themgreen?" she asked. "Will wehave to call on Greenpeace toprotect half the population?"Turning to the serious side ofthis issue, Lyon suggested that itisn't right for women to entrapmen into marriage. Men, shesaid, should be treated like thehuman beings they are, whilewomen should be honest andopen about their intentions. Sheconcluded that although journalistsand other 'experts' mightconsider current "nuptiality patterns"a problem, it was likely the'problem' would be solved just asit has for thousands of years.Lyon, who earned the privilegeof competing in Pacific NorthwestRegion Council 5's annual speechcontest by winning the SaltSpring Speakers' competition earlierthis year, was one of ninecontestants representing ITCclubs throughout VancouverIsland.Second - place in Saturday'scouncil competition went to ClaireThimsen of the Swiftsure ITCClub, who delivered a six-minute,five-second speech entitled CommunicationBreakdown. Thimsendiscussed the three things neededfor good communication: a sender,a receiver and a cleartransmission. She also gave severalhumorous examples ol whatcan happen when one or more ofthese three are not present in aconversation.The winner of the Saturdayevent was Debra Crozier-Smith ofthe Victoria #90 ITC club, whospoke after Lyon on the program.In her speech, ironically entitled'Will we have tospray paint them green?Will we have to call onGreenpeace to protecthalf the population?'Tough Acts To Follow. Crozier-Smith related to the audience herexperiences with two sets offamily pets. She had the audiencelaughing with a story of howanimals, though of the samebreed, often possess extremelydifferent personalities.Crozier-Smith will representCouncil 5 at the Pacific NorthwestRegion ITC speech competition tobe held in May. Should she winthat event, the Victoria residentwill compete against representativesfrom 26 other ITC regionalorganizations around the worldlater this year.Should Crozier-Smith be una­GARYble to attend the upcoming regionalcompetition, Thimsen willrepresent Council 5.Adjudicating Saturday's competitionproved a difficult task.All three judges — Doris Gintherof the Quilchena ITC Club, EdnaPite of the Arbutus ITC Club, andLois Warren of WashingtonState's Alderlynn ITC Club —praised the contestants for thequality of their speeches.Lil Morton, speech contestprogram leader, was equally impressedwith the calibre of competition.She noted that underITC rules, contestants in theevent received a topic in a sealedenvelope. Each speaker was thengiven a mere 10 minutes in whichto prepare a five- to eight-minutespeech on the topic she received.Saturday's Council 5 speechcontest was attended by close to90 people. After the contestantsdelivered their speeches, theaudience enjoyed a buffet dinnerprepared by Harbour House staff.The Salt Spring Speakers ITCClub, whose president is AliceRichards, hosted the event. With only one previousoff-island game to their credit theyentered the Palm Dairies juniorsoccer tournament organized bythe Lake Hill Soccer Associationand tied for first place.Over 500 young soccer playerstook part in the tournament, whichwas played at Braefoot during thelast week-end of March. The islandteam was accompanied by a goodcrowd of supporters consisting ofparents, family and friends.Although the emphasis is not oncompetition, the youngstersacquitted themselves famously,winning two games and tying athird to place first in their division.Brief shots of the team in action intheir striped jerseys appeared onChannel 6 TV.The Otters first game was onSaturday when, despite having thebest of the play and confining theiropponents to two shots, they couldonly manage a tie. Both games theteam played on Sunday were wonhandily.All participants were awardedmemento trophies by thesponsoring Palm Dairies, who areto be complimented for their partin encouraging junior soccer. TheOtters are part of the on-goingGaliano School of the Artsprogram, so Akasha Forest andmanager-coach Bob Walker are tobe congratulated for the success ofthe team.Galiano Volunteer Firemen 'hada ball' when they played a fun twoballfoursome last week. Thetournament, organized by DonAnderson, was played at theGaliano Golf and Country Club.The trophies created by seniorvolunteer Jim Macdonaldillustrated his interest in modernsculpture and his peculiar sense ofhumour, being at the same timeexotic and erotic.The lowest score was achievedby Don Anderson, partnered byFred Wilson, but as a result of atechnicality the 'Hook and Ladder'Trophy was awarded to runnersupBill Stevens and MichaelSharp. The Forestry Trophy,constructed from meltedstyrofoam into which had beeninserted a pruning of twigs toproduce a monstrosity of whichany flower arranger would bedeeply ashamed, was awarded tothe couple who spent most time inthe bush searching for lost balls.The winners were anonymous. TheWoodpecker Trophy given to theplayer who hit the most trees wasnot ready for presentation, socould not be given to Bill Stevenswho so richly deserved it. Thehigh-score booby prize winners,who shall be nameless, won atrophy which shall also benameless, although it was the mostpractical since it contained twouseable golf balls.Golfers will be familiar with theslice which sends the ball veering tothe right, but the slice perpetratedby Jim Macdonald was a moreliteral one. His drive actually cuthis ball in two. Jim naturallyplayed the half nearer the hole.Side bets became an interestingside-line to the serious golf. FireChief Chester Williams and hisgalianoreportpartner lost the first seven holes.However, on the eighth the playersbet a pint of beer, stimulating thechief to concentrate and win thehole. This alcoholic 'skin game'continued on the ninth with thesame result. Chester retired to theclubhouse to down his winnings.The South Galiano Volunteershave begun trainig for the Fiestawhen they will field a tug-of-warteam. They issue a challenge to anyother island organization toassemble a team of eight to accepttheir challenge.Garden ClubA crowded North Galiano Halllast Wednesday testifed to thepopularity of the Galiano GardenClub. On an excellent show benchone item stood out. Grown by thedoyen of gardeners, Dr. A.A.Kingscote, was a wintercauliflower weighing 314 pounds.For the first time in living memorya show bench entry was awardedthe maximum five points byvegetable judge Margaret Edgar.Tony reported he had a dozensimilar heads grown on four plantswhich had survived their secondwinter.The speaker. Dr. Kay Beamish,who was introduced by BillPeterson, spoke about alpinewildflowers and regions andillustrated her talk profusely with aseries of beautiful slides. TheVancouver Naturalist Societyannually organizes a summercamp, and Dr. Beamish reportedon the one held on TrophyMountain near Wells Gray Park.The Society has recently learnedthat the area they visited has nowbeen incorporated into the park,which is good new, indeed. Campis set up with the aid of a helicoptorwhich brings supplies into the areain which the group will work.Walks may take the naturalists ashigh as the 8,000-foot level.Although the expedition takesplace at the end of July there arestill extensive snow patchesthrough which poke AvalancheLilies and Western Anemonies.Other flowers growing in thiswonderful alpine area includearnicas, lupin, columbine,mimulus, cinque-foil, fleabane,several species of heather andlovely chick-weeds (would we hadthis variety in our gardens insteadof the one that plagues us).Although these names arefamiliar, the species are not all thatsame that grow at our level.Almost all alpine varieties growvery close to the ground because ofthe severe conditions and shortgrowing season. Slides of otheralpine areas were shown includingthe Rockies, northern regions andAustralia.The next garden club meetingwill be on Wednesday, May 13,when Bernard Moore will speak onFlowering Shrubs and GroundCovers.Coming EventsGaliano is gearing itself up forthe Easter weekend. A memorial service for KarlBegrich was held recently at ClamBay Farm.Pender auction raises fundsin aid of playschool activitiesBy ELEANOR HARRISONEvery spring the Pender IslandPlayschool holds an auction toraise money to support the schooland make it possible to continuethe following year's activities.This year it was held onSaturday afternoon, April 4, witha large interested number ofPenderites hoping to find just thecast-off treasure from some of theneighbours they needed forthemselves.George Morden did his usualinimitable job in the role asAuctioneer.Just to give an idea of the varietyof goods available, they rangedfrom an automatic garage door, awork of art, a French fishing net,hay for the farm animals, lots ofwindows for the do-it-yourselfhouse builders, home baking andmany donations from the stores,gardening work, income tax preparation,dinner for two at tworestaurants and much more.Pender Island Playschool has anaverage of 20 families. Theyreceive no grants or subsidies sothe auction is a large source of theiroperating funds. They do chargetuition fees and each family assiststhe professional teacher during theoperation of the school year. Thisis the eighth year the auction hasbeen held.Children aged two, three andfour years attend the playschool. Itis government certified, and acertified playschool teacher isemployed. The school is a memberof the Vancouver Island CooperativePlayschool Association,from whom they receive helporganizing the school. Underthe bill, which has already beengiven first reading, teachers'unions would possess the sameright to strike as other employeeorganizations.The Teaching Profession Act,meanwhile, establishes a B.C.College of Teachers and removesthe statutory requirement thathas made membership in the B.C.Teachers' Federation compulsory.Board members took no standon the controversial legislation atlast week's meeting. SuperintendentMike Marshall and chairmanDavid Eyles both said they neededmore time to review thedocuments."The bill (the Teaching ProfessionAct), I think, is farreaching,"said Marshall. "Thebill reaches into a number ofother acts, including the SchoolAct, and makes a number ofamendments. We don't know allthe ramifications of the changesyet."Marshall noted that the Actwill, for instance, change theduties of school vice-principals. Inthe past, the role played by theseadministrators has been limitedby provisions in the School Act.The Teaching Profession Act, hesaid, will make them "administrativeofficers."District 64's superintendentnoted that provisions containedwithin the new legislation havebecome an emotional issue formany groups. However, he expressedthe hope that "people willtake the time" to carefully reviewthe bills and gauge their impacton education in B.C."I think we don't understandall the legislation," he said, "andwe haven't seen the regulationswhich generally accompany newNORTH SALTWATERWORKSacts, so there's not a lot we knowabout them."But there are a few things wedo know, and one of them is thatthe kids (students) will still behere. Therewill still be a tremendous amountof room to carry on locally."Eyles reiterated Marshall'sstatements, adding that he feltthe B.C. government's actionswere having a negative impact onrelations between teachers and"people in management capacities."However, he noted thatSchool District 64 has alwaysvalued good relations with itsteachers.
