Samuel Guss<br />
Samuel Guss, father <strong>of</strong> Rumina Elizabeth Guss, was born April 15, 1824 in Perry County,<br />
Pennsylvania, sixth <strong>of</strong> twelve children <strong>of</strong> Henry <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth (Foose) Guss.<br />
Samuel migrated to Illinois with his younger brother William. They went first to Peoria,<br />
Illinois in 1847, then to LaSalle County, Illinois in 1848.<br />
Samuel married Mary Elizabeth Hadley on August 22, 1850 in Ottawa, LaSalle County,<br />
Illinois. Mary Elizabeth Hadley was born January 25, 1834 in Clermont County, Ohio,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> James P. <strong>and</strong> Rumina (Hill) Hadley.<br />
The 1850 census for LaSalle County, Illinois shows Samuel Guss, farmer, age 26, born<br />
in Pennsylvania <strong>and</strong> Mary Hadley, age 16, born in Ohio as both living with Joseph<br />
Ebersol <strong>and</strong> family, also <strong>of</strong><br />
Pennsylvania. This census was<br />
taken one month after Samuel<br />
<strong>and</strong> Mary were married. Ten<br />
years later, the 1860 census for<br />
Livingston County, Illinois shows<br />
Samuel, age 36, farmer, with<br />
his wife <strong>and</strong> four children as<br />
living with a Daniel Hite.<br />

Samuel served as a private in<br />
the Civil War with Company D,<br />
52nd Infantry Regiment, Illinois<br />
Volunteers, having enlisted<br />
September 10, 1861 at<br />
Sunbury, Illinois. He was<br />
discharged at Danville,<br />
Mississippi on May 27, 1862 by<br />
special field order <strong>of</strong> General<br />
Halleck. The nature <strong>and</strong> cause<br />
<strong>of</strong> his disability were described<br />
in his 1867 sworn statement in<br />
support <strong>of</strong> his claim for Invalid<br />
Pension, which he filed in Ft.<br />
Scott, Kansas.<br />
Samuel <strong>and</strong> Mary had nine<br />
children, the first six <strong>of</strong> which<br />
were born in Illinois. The<br />
younger children were born in<br />
Crawford County, Kansas.
