Riley Cephas and Rumina Elizabeth Pearson
Riley Cephas Pearson, or "RC" as he was sometimes called, was born January
3, 1847
in Croton, Lee County, Iowa, the seventh of twelve children of John Warren
and Jane
(Paulk) Pearson. Having come from Athen s County,
Ohio, the Pearson's had been in
Iowa for about three years at the time of Riley's birth. The 1856 State Census of Lee
County, Iowa lists John and Jane Pearson living in Iowa for twelve years.
In 1857, when Riley was ten years old, his family continued west and settled in
Cra wford County, Kansas. Makingthe trip from Iowa to Kansas with the Pearson's
were the Dalton and Hatch families. They chose homesteads near each other. Many
descendants of the three families remain in the area today. Riley's older sister,
Cha rlotte Tempel Pearson, married Riley Dalton. Riley Dalton appears to be the first to
bear the name "Riley"; he was 23 years old when Riley Pearson was born. The Dalton
family has a family reunion in Girard, Kansas every summer.
Rumina Elizabeth Guss, or “Mina”, was born April 30, 1852 in Livingston County, Illinois,
Pennsylvania, met and Married Mary in Illinois, and had been in Illinois for only a few
years at the time of Rumina's birth. When Rumina was about twelve years
old her
family moved to Crawford County,
Kansas.
Riley
and Rumina were married at
Rumina's parent's
house January 17, 1869
in Girard, Crawford
County, Kansas, by
William
Hoggatt, a Baptist Minister. The
1870 census for Girard shows Riley and
Rowena (Rumina)
with four month old
Mary
as living with Riley's father John.
The 1880 census shows Riley and Mina
(Rumina) with children Mary, Fannie, John,
and Charles living very near John. The
1900 census shows Riley and Mina with
children George,
Robt, Earl, and Ansie
(Ancel).
The 1900 census also shows
Riley's
son John Samuel and wife Laura,
