Kovsies host first
HEDSA symposium
As an institution that prides itself on innovation and
equity, it is no wonder that our university was the host
of the first ever general meeting for the Higher Education
Disability Services Association (HEDSA).
This newly constituted body represents the Disability
Units from the various universities across South Africa.
By creating a forum for an open debate, HEDSA
hopes to find solutions the problems faced by students
with disabilities.
Prof. Niel Viljoen, our Vice-Rector: Operations also spoke
on this issue. He spoke of the project our university started
to ensure wheel chair accessibility to all buildings. After an
extensive survey, our university has decided to spend R2
million a year for five years to achieve this goal. The project
will be completed by 2014.
Hetsie Veitch, Chief Officer of our Unit for Students
with Disabilities (USD), coordinated the event with
HEDSA: “I am really excited that the first ever HEDSA
symposium was held at our university. It also places our
university at the forefront of matters regarding disabilities.”
