1st Race Selections by K.C.M. Saturday May 4, 2013 THE HORSEPLAYERS JOURNAL
1 OK COMMANDER had a casual performance two back when the rival drivers allowed Saftic to win in gate to wire fashion with unchallenged World
Away. He cannot produce the predicted victory without combining a best effort with a suitable drive from McNair. The price should be good enough
if interested.
3 WARRAWEE NEEDY was capably driven by substitute Randy Waples last week when he won his third of the year. He’ll look to keep his Ontario
unbeaten status intact tonight and that is the result that most handicappers will be looking for. I don’t know if any of the others are good enough to
beat him if he races to his best potential and if Jamieson can keep him out of trouble. I’m going to try for an upset but not with great confidence.
He’s the one to beat.
4 UPFRONT HOOSIERBOY has produced a never worse than 2nd record for the current trainer. He might have had one more victory had Waples
not been so far back on April 20 when World Away stole a front end victory to score as a longshot winner. He might fool me tonight but I am going
to rate him in the three slot.
6 NO BU has not been as productive in recent races. Gone is the 1:50 speed that he had in March. It might be difficult to predict when and if he
will pace that fast again but it is possible with Allard training. Not too much surprises this handicapper any more. He’ll have a replacement driver
again. Jamieson will stick with the race favourite.
THE FOLLOWING LISTED IN POST POSITION ORDER
(2) ANDERLECHT will soon reach the $800,000 mark in earnings. Tonight might not be the night for that to happen. He would have to produce a
1-2 finish to reach that goal. Racing at the top level in the pacing division might make it too difficult for him this time.
(5) SING FOR ME GEORGE has rested briefly since his last race. O’Sullivan can have them ready in that situation. We’ve seen him produce good
results in the past with a short or long term layoff pacer. He’s not unplayable when considering exactor or triactor options.
(7) BETTORS REWARD had back to back wins in March/April. Fellows was riding a bit of a hot streak at the time. He’s lost some of his get up and
go recently and hasn’t been quite as good as he was when he was winning. The competition has been tougher to help explain the drop in his
production.
