1.7 Scope <strong>of</strong> the Study<br />

The scope <strong>of</strong> this study covers the activities <strong>of</strong> All Nigeria Peoples Party <strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

out <strong>of</strong> the National Assembly, before <strong>and</strong> after elections. Also actions <strong>of</strong> some prom<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

members <strong>of</strong> the party were also analyzed with<strong>in</strong> the context <strong>of</strong> the politics <strong>of</strong> <strong>opposition</strong><br />

from 1999 to 2009. The study also covers the forces <strong>and</strong> factors that have shaped the<br />

formation <strong>of</strong> the Nigerian state, political <strong>parties</strong> <strong>and</strong> the various dimensions that political<br />

<strong>opposition</strong> politics have taken from colonialism to post colonialism.The study also covers<br />

the analysis <strong>of</strong> the characters <strong>and</strong> forces that had led the party through the path <strong>of</strong> crisis<br />

between 1999 <strong>and</strong> 2009.<br />

1.8 Organization <strong>of</strong> the Study<br />

Chapter one is on the general background to the study.It conta<strong>in</strong>s the statement <strong>of</strong> the<br />

research problem, aims <strong>and</strong> objectives, research assumptions, sope <strong>of</strong> the study <strong>and</strong> the<br />

significance <strong>of</strong> the study.<br />

Chapter two dwells on the review <strong>of</strong> the related literature on political <strong>parties</strong>, political<br />

<strong>opposition</strong> around the globe, Africa <strong>and</strong> Nigeria.The gaps <strong>in</strong> the literature are identified,<br />

which justified the study.Also, <strong>in</strong> this chapter, theoretical consideration <strong>of</strong> the relevant<br />

theories on political <strong>parties</strong> are undertaken <strong>and</strong> hence adopted the Roberto Michel’s Iron<br />

law <strong>of</strong> oligarchy is adopted as the theoretical framework <strong>of</strong> the study.<br />
