that sounds far-fetched at first, adjusting the<br />
campaign background to incorporate elements<br />
of all the players’ backstories.<br />
We generally do a little pre-planning and<br />
offer guidance around the icon roles, followed<br />
by adjustment and retconning as the players<br />
create their uniques and backgrounds.<br />
The notes on relationships with the<br />
following heroic, ambiguous, and villainous<br />
icons supplement the master chart. This isn’t<br />
new information since it’s all in the chart, but<br />
the text’s phrasing may spark something for you<br />
that the chart didn’t.<br />
Heroic Icons<br />
Usually Archmage, Emperor, Great Gold Wyrm,<br />
and Priestess. Possibly Dwarf King and Elf<br />
Queen.<br />
Positive Relationship with Heroic Icon<br />
(max 3 points)<br />
The icon is favorably inclined toward you,<br />
possibly based on your family history, your<br />
personal accomplishments, omens in the stars,<br />
etc. You can often parley this favor into personal<br />
advantage.<br />
Conflicted Relationship with Heroic<br />
Icon (max 3 points)<br />
The icon harbors both favorable and<br />
unfavorable inclinations toward you. The<br />
conflict is often between two different levels of<br />
social interaction: such as, you’re from a family<br />
to which the icon is indebted but your personal<br />
behavior has caused real problems. You can<br />
usually manage it so that the connection benefits<br />
you more than it sets you back, but sometimes it<br />
bites you on the ass. Occasionally, if you’re a<br />
troublemaker, you might have the opportunity<br />
to cause problems for the icon that relates to<br />
your conflict.<br />
Negative Relationship with Heroic Icon<br />
(max 1 point)<br />
One way or another, you have gained the icon’s<br />
wrath. Even so, the connection represents some<br />
sort of resource for you, such as insider<br />
knowledge associated with the icon or<br />
acquaintance with the icon’s rivals, who may<br />
treat you as an occasional ally.<br />
<br />
Ambiguous Icons<br />
Usually Crusader, Dwarf King, Elf Queen, High<br />
Druid, and Prince of Shadows. Possibly<br />
Emperor and the Three.<br />
Positive Relationship with Ambiguous<br />
Icon (max 3 points)<br />
As with a good icon, except that the relationship<br />
is more likely to provide you access to the dark<br />
side of power politics.<br />
Conflicted Relationship with<br />
Ambiguous Icon (max 3 points)<br />
As with a good icon, except that you are more<br />
likely to find heroic allies siding with you<br />
against the icon. In most social circles, for<br />
example, one is expected to have no better than<br />
a conflicted relationship with the Prince of<br />
Shadows, and a character with a publically<br />
positive relationship to him would fall under<br />
suspicion.<br />
Negative Relationship with Ambiguous<br />
Icon (max 2 points)<br />
As with the good icon, except that being at odds<br />
with the icon is much more socially acceptable.<br />
<br />
Villainous Icons<br />
Usually Diabolist, Lich King, Orc Lord, and the<br />
Three. Possibly Crusader and Prince of<br />
Shadows.<br />
Positive Relationship with Villainous<br />
Icon (max 1 point)<br />
Any character who is in the good graces of a<br />
villainous icon has some explaining to do. One<br />
point of positive relationship is the maximum<br />
because villains and their henchlings aren’t in<br />
business to help heroes.<br />
