DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY - May 1, 2011
Today’s Gospel Reflection: John 20:19-31
GET REAL!
hose of us who flatter ourselves that we have a
“realistic” view of the world may listen to the first
reading today and say, “Get real!” when we hear Luke’s
account of the early, Elysian days of the Christian movement. All seems to
be rosy, lots of wonders are performed, everyone shares selflessly, they eat
together in “exultation,” and the Lord added to their numbers? Well, who
wouldn’t be attracted to a group like this? From the wind that swept
through the upper room at Pentecost as the Spirit of God blew over the
face of the waters in Genesis, and the fire that appeared over each disciple
as the light appeared at the dawn of creation, Luke’s intent in Acts is to
show a new creation, a restoration of creation’s original goodness through
the working of the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit who continues to make us
into the Body of Christ. We may occasionally, like Thomas in the Gospel,
say, “Get real!” but our ultimate reality in the Spirit is to work continually
to make our Christian community a new creation, one in which others will
find God’s joy and beauty. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
¿Cómo no sentirse
History of the Divine Mercy
On February 22nd 1931, Jesus appeared to a
young Polish nun, Sr. Faustina Kowalska. He
was dressed in a white garment and had one
hand raised in blessing and the other at His
breast. From His chest flowed rays, one in red
and the others in light shades. He asked Sr. Faustina to reproduce
the image of Him just as she saw it with the words "Jesus I Trust
in You" to be written below His feet. He asked her to display the
image in her own convent chapel and then throughout the whole
world. Sr. Faustina's Spiritual Director told her to ask Jesus the
significance of the two rays and Jesus explained:
"The rays represent the Blood and Water that gushed forth
from the depths of my Mercy when my Agonizing Heart was
pierced on the cross. The pale rays symbolize the water, which
cleanses and purifies the soul. These rays will shield the soul
before the justice of My Father. Fortunate are those who live
in this shelter, for the justice of God will not reach them
there."
The Feast of Divine Mercy, celebrated on the Octave of Easter
(the Sunday after Easter Sunday), is a relatively new addition to
the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar. Celebrating the Divine
Mercy of Jesus Christ, as revealed by Christ Himself to Saint
Maria Faustina Kowalska, this feast was extended to the entire
Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II on April 30, 2000, the day
that he canonized Saint Faustina.
FIRST FRIDAY PRAYER AND DEVOTION TO MARY,
OUR LADY
Our Church has traditionally honored Mary, Our Lady,
in a special way during the month of May. Mary, as the
mother of God and the mother of the Church, models for us what
discipleship in Jesus Christ is all about. Through the examples of
Mary’s “yes” to be the mother of God, her holiness, her vision, her
creativity, her mercy, her compassion and her love, we have the encouragement
to respond humanly to God’s presence and grace in our
lives. One way to respond to God’s presence and grace in our lives
during May is to spend time in prayer on the first Friday of the month.
Let this day be a beautiful way for us as individuals, as families, and
as a community of faith to grow stronger in our discipleship.
Our parish has Mass on the First Friday of every month at the
following times:
8:00 a.m. – English, 6:00 p.m. – Vietnamese
7:30 p.m. – Spanish
All parishioners are invited to pray before the Blessed
Sacrament on Friday, May 6 at the following times:
From the conclusion of the 8:00 a.m. mass until the beginning of the
6:00 p.m. mass.
At 8:30 p.m. with the Rosary for Peace Society (Rosary in English).
At 11:00 p.m. with the Sacred Heart Alliance (Rosary in Vietnamese)
12:00 midnight: Benediction to conclude exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament.
Please consider offering some of your time in
prayer on: FRIDAY, MAY 6
Our parish honors
Mary, Our Lady,
during the month of May
E
ver since the days of the Early Church, Mary
has been held in high esteem. The Early
Church revered her in the company of the apostles.
Soon after, the Church declared her to be the
“Theotokos,” the God-bearer. Over the ages, saints have invoked
her, theologians have speculated about her and ordinary people
have prayed for her intercession. Why is there such great devotion
to Mary, and why do we see her depicted in so many different
forms of art?
Mary is, first and always, the great disciple, the person who chose
to say “yes” to God’s invitation to grace and holiness. With love
she became the mother of God, bearing the incarnation in her body
and in her life. She, too, took up the cross, standing beneath her
rejected and reviled son as he died. Mary, as the mother of the
Church, is the sign of our own discipleship. She encourages all of
us to respond humanly to God’s presence and grace in our lives.
She is the model by which we must continue to enflesh the Word
in all that we say and do.
Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, Mary has been
depicted in a myriad of art forms. Just look around our own church
of St. Maria Goretti. How many different images of Mary can you
find? (Hint: there are at least seven!) All of these images serve to
remind us that we are called to emulate her steadfast faith, protect
the weak, defend the poor and comfort the sick and dying. Her
image represents all that the Church hopes to be.
The month of May has traditionally been the month that the
Church honors Mary in even a more particular way. Beginning the
weekend of May 7, 8 the different cultural communities of St.
Maria Goretti will invite the entire parish to honor Mary. Watch
each week as a different image of Mary, Our Lady, is prominently
placed within the church for all of us to pray before.
NEW MEMBERS WELCOME!
Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a
Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. To so
clearly state your Catholic commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages,
recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner
makes things much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school
registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor,
and even funerals.
We are often asked to provide affidavits for baptismal and confirmation
sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active, and contributing
member in our parish. How do you know if you are already registered? A
registered parishioner receives all parish mailings.
So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering.
Registration forms are always available at the church entrances. Please complete
one today and return it this week if you would like to join our community.
TREASURES FROM OUR
TRADITION
One of the great Easter traditions is “Mystagogy,” an ancient
word meaning “reflection on the mysteries.” It is a style of catechesis,
or passing on the faith. People who have shared an experience, in
this case those who have been baptized at Easter, are urged to recall
their experience, reflect on its meaning, and apply their insights to
their new way of life.
There is an aspect of an experience that is simply not available
until you’ve had it. For example, you may think you know weddings
inside out; you’ve been to dozens, seen hundreds in the movies
or on television, but until you’ve said “I do” to another, there is a certain
knowledge unavailable to you. Those who go down into the waters
of baptism as adults have similar experiences; they have all taken
baths before, but not like this one! Mystagogy helps such persons to
uncover the deep meaning of the experience, their sense of a new
beginning, of God’s abundant love, of forgiveness, of community.
It takes time for the power of the Easter Vigil to work its
wonders for us. Those who are newly baptized are called “neophytes,”
meaning “newly planted.” The tender buds of spring need care and
nurturing, and our new brothers and sisters need your prayer and your
faithful example. —James Field, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
HEALTH CORNER
Fire Up Your Metabolism. First, eat up! One way to get your metabolism
humming is to eat small meals and snacks throughout the day. Digestion
is a very energy intensive process; it takes work to convert the food you
eat into energy you use so get your body working by digesting!
Second, muscle up! The rate of your metabolism is in direct proportion to
the amount of lean muscle mass on your body because muscle tissue is
active even when you are resting.
Third, sweat it out. Sweat can eliminate toxins that slow down the body’s
metabolism. In addition, drink up. Your metabolism slows down when you
are dehydrated.
Last, get your "Z's and your D's". This refers to sleep and vitamin D. Sleep
is directly linked to our metabolism and our ability to maintain balanced
hormones. And a lack of vitamin D can lead to metabolic syndrome so 10
– 15 minutes of sunshine a day on your arms and legs will feel great, and
it could help your waist line.
SMILE!!
Divina Misericordia
a Iglesia Católica es universal, extendida
en diversas naciones y culturas. A través
—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
VIERNES PRIMERO: ORACION Y DEVOCION
A MARIA, NUESTRA MADRE
8:00 a.m. – Misa en inglés, 6:00 p.m. – Misa en vietnamita
7:30 p.m. – Misa en español
los Viernes Primeros en el siguiente horario:
De las 8:00 a.m. a las 6:00 p.m.
11:00 p.m. Alianza del Sagrado Corazón (vietnamita)
y perspectiva.
Nuestra Parroquia Honra a María,
Nuestra Madre
tu hijo”!
Virgen? No sabemos.
No olvide
cuantos pensamientos agradables. —Anónimo
