BARCELONA — An unknown drawing that appears to be the work of Pablo Picasso (1881- 1973) has been discovered at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, its representative said yesterday. The drawing, which has been named "Figure with pipe," had been attached to the back of Picasso's 1896 painting "Portrait of the mother of the artist." It was discovered when the painting was restored. The drawing, which appears to copy some 18th-century Flemish engraving, was made before the painting. It may have been an exercise forming part of Picasso's artistic training, museum director Bernardo Laniado-Romero said. Page 23 Tuesday, February 26, 2013 OOC’s Takatuf wins award By A Business Reporter MUSCAT — Takatuf, the human capital unit of Oman Oil Company (OOC), has been awarded top Honours in the category Best Leadership Engagement by e-Learning Solution Provider, Skillsoft. The announcement was made recently at an event held in Dubai by the learning solutions provider for its customers. The winning case study from Takatuf looked at how e-learning has been used as part of the leadership development programme within Oman Oil Company and its subsidiaries in Oman. Aliya Al Aufi, HR Business Partner at Takatuf accepted the award on behalf of the organisation: “e-Learning has been the perfect tool to standardise the varied experience and management practice levels across the group and to instill leadership practices at every level.” We have also used it as a bridging step to create a unified standard before our staff enters the formal leadership development programme with the London Business School.” The criteria for the award were that it had to be given to a company who has used innovative methods and strategy for the development and engagement of their leaders. The selection was made by a panel who evaluated several other company strategies and programmes in the Gulf region that are doing the same. Khalid Al Jashmi who heads up Takatuf describes the value of providing online training content that staff can complete on their own, “ It allows 24/7 learning access to a diverse workforce both professional and geographical.” “It also helps us create a culture of information sharing and learning driven development. It optimises training costs and pepares people to access knowledge through technology. “But probably most importantly it delivers fundamental knowledge in an efficient way.” The e-Learning leadership development content used by Takatuf within the OOC Group contains mandatory content linked to the group’s Leadership competencies and allows staff to develop new skills. “To ensure the success of this pioneering form of training a lot of detailed planning and getting the buy-in from a large enough section of our workforce was needed,” explains Al Jashmi. He further explained the lessons learned by the Takatuf team which helped them to achieve a good rate of participation and results. “In our planning we had to be pro-active and begin with the end in mind.” “To ensure buy-in and participation the team had to approach it with a winwin mindset and seek first to understand the needs of staff before implementation.” On the back of the success of the Takatuf’s e-Learning award for leadership development the organisation plans to build on the programme by making technical and professional e-learning content such as HR Advantage available. There are also plans to customise compulsory knowledge for areas like Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and confidentiality policies and make these available as e-Learning content. Fraudsters target Bank Muscat travel cards MUSCAT — Bank Muscat yesterday revealed that it was investigating suspected fraud involving prepaid travel card transactions totalling RO15 million in value. In a disclosure notification to Muscat Securities Market (MSM), the country’s largest lender stated that 12 prepaid travel cards were “compromised” on February 20, 2013. The transactions are believed to have taken place outside of the Sultanate. “No customers have suffered any financial loss and no other credit or debit cards issued by Bank Muscat have been affected. The Bank is working with all stakeholders to further investigate and to establish any losses arising from these transactions. We will inform the market of any material developments,” the statement added. China manufacturing growth falls CHINA’S manufacturing growth hit a four-month low in February but remained positive, British banking giant HSBC said, noting that the world’s second-biggest economy was still recovering slowly. Page 23 Royalty Pharma moots $6.6 bn bid for Elan DUBLIN — Investment firm Royalty Pharma has made a $6.6 billion bid approach to Elan, seeking to scupper the Irish drugmaker's plan to spend most of the proceeds from a major drug sale on deals and instead give the money to shareholders. Royalty Pharma, which buys royalty streams of patented drugs, said yesterday it planned to offer $11 per share, a 4 per cent premium to Elan's closing share price on Friday in New York, where the company has its primary listing. Elan announced earlier this month it would raise more than $3.25 billion by selling its interests in its main drug, multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment Tysabri, to US partner Biogen Idec and effectively reinvent itself by splashing most of the cash on acquisitions. Royalty Pharma, however, said the risks associated with this plan were substantial, prompting it to offer Elan shareholders a "simple and clear choice" with a cash proposal it said represented the full value of the company today. Elan shares in Dublin were up 8.9 per cent at 8.68 euros ($11.42) by 1200 GMT. The firm, in which US group Johnson & Johnson is an 18 per cent shareholder, said it would not make a comment on Royalty Pharma's proposal for the time being. Deutsche Bank analyst Richard Parkes said the small premium suggested by Royalty Pharma might deter Elan's shareholders. "But it's not totally unreasonable," he added. "I think investors are now faced with a straight question of whether you lock in the value at a small discount to asset value or you have faith that management can deliver on its planned strategy of acquiring assets." Royalty Pharma said it had not received a formal response from Elan and had been unsuccessful in its efforts to engage with the company since making contact with it on February 18. It added it was "surprised" by Elan's announcement on Friday that it planned to return $1 billion to shareholders by buying back some of its shares, because it did not address the proposed offer. Following the agreement to sell Tysabri — which accounted for almost all of Elan's revenue — the Dublin-based company will still receive a royalty on its sales. Elan said last month it had already spoken to several companies about potential deals and would look to move quickly over the next 12-18 months. — Reuters
