Stewart walks red
carpet on crutches
ACTRESS Kristen Stewart attended the
85th Academy Awards supported on
a pair of crutches. The 22-year-old is
said to have stepped on glass recently and was
unable to walk on her own.
Dressed in stylish Reem Acra gown, Stewart
stopped and posed for the cameras on the
red carpet, reports dailymail.co.uk. She was
comforted by actress Jennifer Lawrence, who

later won the award of best actress for her role
in movie Silver Linings Playbook.
Stewart was later seen hobbling on the
stage with actor Daniel Radcliffe as she went

I’m not a believer in Oscars: Sunny: National
Award winning actor Sunny Deol, who
is busy promoting his film I Love New Year,
is contented with Indian audience and doesn’t
feel the need to go to the Oscars.
“What is the need for Indians to go to the
Oscars? (Indians ko Oscar jaane ki zaroorat
kya hai?). Aren’t we happy here? Make the Indian
audience happy. We have a population of
130 crore, is it not enough?” Sunny Deol told
reporters during the theatrical trailer release of
I Love New Year yesterday.
In his 30 years’ acting journey, the 56-yearold
bagged two National Awards for Ghayal
and Damini and says they came as a surprise
to him.
“Everybody has an individual take on it. I
am not a believer of these things (Oscars). I
was surprised when I got the National Award. I
was like how the hell did I get it?”
Media shy Sunny talked candidly at the
event and said: “Everything is manipulated
these days. Things are such that we ourselves
give the news and read the other day.”
Known for his action roles, the actor’s I
Love New Year is a romantic comedy.
“As an actor I want to do everything. With
comedy, it gets gentler... in action, it’s much
about fighting. My fans should also see the
other side of me,” he said.
Co-directed by Vinay Sapru and Radhika
Rao, I Love New Year also features Kangna
Ranaut in the female lead and is slated for an

Life of Pi leads Oscar pack,
spreads Indian flavour
THE Indian flavour was predominant at
the 85th Academy Awards, when Life
of Pi, widely shot in India with Indian
actors, won the maximum awards, including
the best director’s trophy for Ang Lee, who not
only thanked his Indian crew but also wowed
everyone by saying namaste.
Another India link was Lincoln, a historical
drama about the last few months of 16th US
President Abraham Lincoln, which has been
co-produced by Indian business tycoon Anil
Ambani’s Reliance Entertainment and Dream-
Works.
However, India’s only hope — vocalist
Bombay Jayashri — lost the award in the best
original song category.
Life of Pi, based on Canadian author Yann
Martel’s Booker Prize winning eponymous
novel, won four out of its 11 nominations at
the 85th Academy Awards.
Apart from the best director’s gong for Lee,
who won his second Oscar after 2005 Brokeback
Mountain, Life of Pi clinched the trophies
for best cinematography (Claudio Miranda),
best music — original score (Mychael Danna),
and best visual effects (Bill Westenhofer, Guillaume
Rocheron, Erik-Jan De Boer and Donald
R Elliott).
In his acceptance speech, Lee thanked his
producers, “Indian crew”, technicians who
worked on the movie and the film’s lead actor
Suraj Sharma.
“Suraj, where are you,” he asked, and the
cameras panned to Suraj, a 19-year-old Delhi
boy who made his acting debut with the mov-
ie. He waved at Lee with joy. Lee ended the
speech with a warm namaste.
Indian singer Bombay Jayashri lost out
the trophy of best original song to Adele, who
took home the golden statuette for Skyfall. The
British singer also performed at the gala ceremony.
In a show of great variety, all four top
awards — best actor, actress, director and film,
went to different movies. The best actor trophy
went to Daniel Day-Lewis for portraying Abraham
Lincoln in Lincoln, which won a total
of two awards out of its 12 nominations. The
other gong was for production design.
Day-Lewis is the only actor to win three
best actor Oscars for My Left Foot, There Will
Be Blood and now Lincoln. Jennifer Lawrence
won the best actress trophy for her work in Silver
Linings Playbook.
The best film award went to Argo, which
was announced by US First Lady Michelle
Obama. Based on a joint CIA-Canadian secret
operation to extract six American diplomatic
personnel during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis,
the film also got the trophy for best editing and
best adapted screenplay.
While Anne Hathaway walked away with
best actress in a supporting role Oscar for Les
Miserables, Christoph Waltz picked up the best
supporting actor trophy for his performance in
Django Unchained.
The best original screenplay trophy went
to film-maker Quentin Tarantino for Django
Unchained, set among the slave plantations of
pre-American Civil War. — IANS
No Oscar for Bombay Jayashri,
Adele wins for original song
INDIAN vocalist Bombay Jayashri, who
was nominated in the best original song
category at the 85th Academy Awards for
her track Pi Lullaby from Life of Pi, lost the
trophy to British singer Adele, who took home
the statuette for Skyfall. However, Life of Pi
won the best music — original score award.
Written and sung by Jayashri, Pi Lullaby
was also competing with other numbers like
Before my time from Chasing Ice (music and
lyrics by J Ralph, Everybody needs a best
friend from Ted (music by Walter Murphy; lyrics
by Seth MacFarlane) and Suddenly from
Les Miserables (music by Claude-Michel
Schonberg; lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and
Alain Boublil).
Adele, who performed Skyfall at the glitzy
ceremony, collected her award with Paul Epworth.
The Oscar award for best music —
original score went to Mychael Danna for Life
of Pi.
Danna’s competitors for the award were
Anna Karenina (Dario Marianelli), Argo (Alexandre
Desplat), Lincoln (John Williams) and
Skyfall (Thomas Newman).
Best costume design: Jacqueline Durran
bagged the best achievement in costume design
trophy for the film Anna Karenina.
Other nominations in this category were
Paco Delgado (Les Miserables), Joanna Johnston
(Lincoln), Eiko Ishioka (Mirror Mirror)
and Colleen Atwood (Snow White and the
Huntsman).
The best achievement in make-up and hairstyling
went to Lisa Westcott and Julie Dartnell
for Les Miserables.
Best animated feature film: Directors Mark
Andrews and Brenda Chapman’s Brave won
the best animated feature film award.
The film’s story is about a high-spirited
Scottish princess Merida, who resists her
mother’s efforts to transform her into a more
ladylike young woman.
For Lawrence, life is lonely, but worth it!

where she encounters a witch, who teaches her
a dangerous spell.
The film pipped Frankenweenie, ParaNorman,
The Pirates! Band of Misfits and Wreck-It
Ralph, to win the prestigious trophy. Director
Andrews was “brave” enough to wear a kilt to
the Oscar stage and collect the trophy.
Christoph Waltz picked up the best supporting
actor trophy for Django Unchained.
Waltz, 56, played Dr King Schultz, a German
bounty hunter in the pre-Civil War South
who buys a slave to assist him with his work, in
Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.
This is Waltz’s second Oscar award. He
won the first for his supporting role in the 2009
film Inglorius Basterds.
For this year’s Oscar statuette, he pipped
Alan Arkin (Argo), Robert De Niro (Silver Linings
Playbook), Philip Seymour Hoffman (The
Master) and Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln).
