BERLIN — Holders Barcelona
and domestic rivals Real
continue their march towards
a possible "Clasico" in the
European Champions League
final against quarterfinal opponents
who couldn't be more
different.
The Spanish league leaders
Real Madrid visit arguably the
biggest surprise team in event
history, APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus,
today.
The next day Barca are at
Italian champions AC Milan
who have won the elite event
MADRID — Villarreal moved
above the danger zone in the
Spanish Liga on Sunday with
a 2-0 win at Rayo Vallecano,
with goals from Marco Ruben
and veteran defender Angel.
The comfortable win confirmed
Villarreal's progress
under Miguel Angel Lotina,
who took over as coach last
week from the short-lived Jose
Molina.
The yellows are now fifth
seven times and are the only
team to have taken a point off
the title holders in the campaign
in a 2-2 group stage
draw.
In the other ties, Chelsea
carry all English hopes when
they visit Benfica in Lisbon,
and Bayern Munich are at
Olympique Marseille in their
dream of reaching the May 19
final in their home stadium.
Just as Barca, Real Madrid
have won seven and drawn
the other game in an emphatic
campaign as they travel to
from bottom in the league, five
points above the danger zone,
and level with Granada on 31
points. Granada and Villarreal
are one point below Betis, who
stayed above the danger zone
on Sunday with a 1-1 draw at
home to Racing Santander.
Roque Santa Cruz put Betis
ahead. Christian Stuani then
levelled for Santander, who
are third from bottom, level on
25 points with Sporting Gijon
APOEL, who after surprisingly
winning their group eliminated
Olympique Lyon on penalties
in the round of 16.
"We've done something
exceptional, something that
can never happen again," said
APOEL president Phivos Erotokritou
ahead of the biggest
game in club history.
Cristiano Ronaldo and
company are the overwhelming
favourites even though
the Spanish league leaders
will miss the suspended Xabi
Alonso and injured lassana Di-
Villarreal, Betis move above Spanish danger zone
and Zaragoza.
Earlier on Sunday, Gijon
drew 1-1 at Bilbao. The result
did them few favours, just as
Santander's draw wasn't really
much help either.
Zaragoza, for their part,
beat Atletico Madrid 1-0,
thanks to a late Apono penalty.
However, it is clear that they
are still favourites for relegation,
together with Gijon and
Santander. Earlier on Sunday,
Butragueno remained his usual
diplomatic self.
"You never know, football
is unpredictable and it's true
that there were very strong
teams that we wanted to avoid,
but APOEL have been a big
surprise in this competition,
and we have to be extremely
respectful," Butragueno said.
"They have reached the
quarterfinals, which means
they are a very strong team, so
we have to be very focused on
every detail and be alert." Bar-
Luiz plays down Drogba ‘jibe’ ahead of tie
LISBON — Chelsea defender David
Luiz insisted Didier Drogba had not been
mocking Benfica when he was filmed
trembling theatrically after the Blues were
drawn against the Portuguese giants.
In video shown on Chelsea's website
shortly after the Champions League quarterfinal
pairings were announced, Ivory
Coast striker Drogba could be seen shaking
uncontrollably after the club were
drawn with Benfica.
The footage has been viewed as a jibe
against Benfica in some quarters, but Luiz
revealed yesterday that Drogba's bizarre
act was referencing the fact that Chelsea
were on course to play Barcelona in the
semifinals.
"If people watch the video closely, it's
not directed at Benfica, it was at Barcelona,
because Barcelona are a big team,"
Luiz told reporters.
"It was not directed at Benfica because
Didier knows that they are a big team
and that Benfica are going to be difficult
opponents."Benfica coach Jorge Jesus
meanwhile laughed off Drogba's antics,
but pointedly took a swipe at the demise
of English giants Manchester United and
Manchester City against Portuguese op-
position this season.
Benfica helped eliminate United in
the first round of the Champions League
while Sporting Lisbon dumped City out
of the Europa League earlier this month.
"Mr Drogba? Who knows what he
was thinking, he was probably joking,"
Jesus smiled. "But Benfica and Sporting
eliminated England's top two teams from
Europe this season so you can see that
Portuguese football is strong. "Any re-
sponses we give to Drogba will be given
on the field."
Jesus also shrugged off the problems
bedevilling Chelsea, who are struggling
to qualify for next season's Champions
League following a difficult season which
saw the departure of Andre Villas-Boas
earlier this month.
"It's not important. They are a team
well-used to reaching finals of big competitions,"
Jesus said. "The change of coach
doesn't change the quality and experience
of the players that they have. They are
used to reaching finals."
The Benfica coach also played down
the significance of Benfica's formidable
home record at the Stadium of Light,
where they are unbeaten in 10 home
matches in European competition.
"(The home record) is only a sign that
we've played well all the way through the
competition and a sign that we are working
well," Jesus said.
"But the further we go the stronger the
opposition gets so we're going to have to
continue to be strong to keep winning.
"We're going to have to play a perfect
game to win. At this time there are no favourites.
Both teams are strong." — AFP
Athletic Bilbao, Espanyol and
Levante saw their hopes of finishing
in the European places
dented.Bilbao were held 1-1
at home by lowly Sporting
Gijon, for whom Alberto Lora
equalized in injury time.
ca will also not have a stroll
in the park against Milan after
destroying Bayer Leverkusen
7-1 in the last game thanks to a
Champions League record five
goals from Lionel Messi.
But Barca won 3-2 in Milan
in the group stage and will
be happy that Thiago Silva is
missing for Milan after scoring
a late 2-2 equaliser at the Nou
Camp.
PARIS — Paris St Germain's
faltering Ligue 1 title challenge
suffered another blow
when they were held to a 1-1
home draw by Girondins Bordeaux
on Sunday.
PSG are level with
Montpellier on 60 points from
29 games but the unfashionable
southern side, who reclaimed
top spot on Saturday
thanks to a last-gasp 1-0 win
over St Etienne, lead on goal
the lead on 77 minutes when
Mohamed Al Naggar battled
before Kab Kwon triumphed
with 11-9, 12-14, 11-13, 11-
Schoolboys Sachin He-
sini is also ready for the big
occasion. "I think that Barcelona
are the strongest team in
the world, but it does not take a
wizard to know it. They marked
an era in football history, but
tackling them is a big stimulus
for us," Ambrosini said.
"It will take a game with
great spirit of sacrifice from
all of us. There is not a single
player to stop. Barca have
many weapons." The winner
of the Milan v Barca tie runs
into Benfica or Chelsea, with
the Blues looking to use a little
Nicolas Maurice-Belay set up
Cheick Diabate who scored
into an empty net but Guillaume
Horau equalised for the
powerful shot from a superb
Mathieu Bodmer heel pass.
Bordeaux moved up to
eighth place on 41 points.
Four days after their first
defeat in four months in the
French Cup, Paris played
poorly once again.
in the singles, joined
forces in the men’s doubles to
cause the biggest upset of the
tournament when they played
with maturity beyond their
bit of inside knowledge from
their former Benfica players
David Luiz and Ramires on
Tuesday.
"They will both know the
atmosphere there and they
both know the team. So it does
help. They are looking forward
to going back," said manager
Roberto Di Matteo.
Chelsea have no serious
injury concerns but Di Matteo
must choose between Didier
Drogba and Fernando Torres
in attack while Gary Cahill is
in pole position to start along-
react once again," PSG football
director Leonardo told
French television Canal+.
"This game had been exhausting
because we did
not have the control. You
suffer when you trail your
opponent on the scoreboard,"
he added.
Paris had the first chances
but Alex headed the ball
against the post on 29 minutes
and keeper Cedric Carasso
brilliantly denied Mohamed
top seeded team of Nitin
