Faculty Position in Human Nutrition and Metabolism The Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of California at Berkeley is seeking an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Nutrition for a nine-month tenure track position beginning July 1 , 1998. The appointee is expected to have established, or shown strong potential for developing, an independent research program in the general area of metabolic regulation, nutritional biochemistry or nutritional disorders. Research need not involve humans directly, but should be ultimately applicable to human nutrition and metabolism. Areas including genetics, endocrinology, metabolism, physiology and energetics are appropriate. An interest in the biologic basis or consequences of obesity is an advantage but is not required. The appointee may work with graduate students seeking advanced degrees in Nutrition, Toxicology, Comparative Biochemistry, Endocrinology or related fields. The applicant must hold a Ph.D. or an M.D. or equivalent degree. Teaching assignments will be in the area of human nutrition and health. PREDOCTORAL STIPENDS IN NUTRITION SCIENCES/CANCER PREVENTION An NIH-funded predoctoral position is available for U.S. citizens or permanent residents who desire Ph.D. training in Nutrition Sciences. Training includes courses in basic and clinical nutrition and chronic disease prevention; exposure to patients and to disease prevention projects; and research related to prevention of chronic disease, especially cancer. Support includes stipend, tuition and fees, supplies, and travel to scientific meetings. Minority applicants are strongly encouraged. FELLOWSHIP FOR PHYSICIANS IN CLINICAL NUTRITION A two-year NIH-funded fellowship position is available for M.D.s who desire training in clinical nutrition. It includes courses in basic and clinical nutrition and chronic disease prevention, training in the care of patients with nutritional disorders, and research. A one-year fellowship can be arranged. Desirable Qualifications: Prior college-level teaching experience, clinical experience in a medical setting beyond supervised practice, experience in human physiological and/or clinical research, demonstrated research productivity, computer-related multimedia experience and ability to communicate and interact favorably with students and faculty. Responsibilities: Teach medical nutrition therapy with lab, a large enrollment introductory nutrition course, and team teach graduate level nutrition courses; serve as Program Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics; conduct scholarly activity; and advise students. Qualifications: A Ph.D. in agricultural and resource economics or economics is required. The candidate must have a demonstrated trac record of commitmenttoteaching and performing research on prob’ems in the area of food, agricultural, and nuthtion policy, domestic and intemational. The candidate must have a strong background in econometrics and/or quantitative methods. Research: The incumbent is expected to conduct theoretical, conceptual, and quantitative research on policies on food and related resources, nutrition, and human and environmental safety and health. Issues thatmay be addressed include food and nutrition demand, the economics of nutritional status and well-being, food and nutrition information and intervention policies, economics offood and environmental safety, the economics of food systems, food security, and nutrition and food problems in economic development. Teaching: Two semesters of undergraduate and/or graduate courses and one graduate or undergraduate seminar per year.
