teammate Chronicles Undefeated season

In 1982 the Daniel Boone wrestling
team accomplished something that no
Blazer mat team has been able to since
then. During that season, the Blazers
lost none of their 16 team matches – a
season of perfection.
“At the beginning of the season, we
knew it was possible…we knew we
had a shot,” said douG WEaVEr, a
member of the team back then and a
Daniel Boone groundskeeper now.
Weaver is the head groundskeeper
at Daniel Boone Middle School.
Ironically, a teammate, Eric
WaGnEr, is head groundskeeper at
Daniel Boone High School.
Weaver was a member of that
team, which was honored during
Homecoming festivities Oct. 1 by being
placed on Daniel Boone Varsity
Club’s Wall of Fame.
Weaver – who has worked in many
capacities for the Daniel Boone Area
School District for several years – was

a part of that team and wrestled from
105 to 126 pounds. The wrestling
team was coming off of a year in which
they had only two losses and nearly
everyone was coming back.
“We took it a match at a time,”
said Weaver, who was a co-captain
of the team along with wrestler PaT
KanE. One of those matches included
a championship match including a
wrestler from Oley Valley who was undefeated
at 21-0 with 19 pins. Weaver’s
job was simply not to get pinned, and
even though he lost, he avoided the
pin and the Blazers came out on top.
The team’s coach was Weaver’s father
Don, which added to the younger
Weaver’s amazing experience.
“In addition to being outstanding
athletes, ten members of the team
were also members of the National
Honor Society,” said head coach don
WEaVEr. “So much of our success
came from the athletes’ dedication and
the leadership of our veteran wrestlers.”
The younger Weaver had mixed
emotions when the Blazers won their
last group meet.
“It was a combination of elation and
relief,” he said. The relief was simply

that he could eat again. Weaver, during
the season, needed to get down
to a lower weight class to help Daniel
Boone win.
Weaver went on to college at Penn
State for one semester and then transferred
to West Chester University.
He began working at his old high
school, Daniel Boone, and coached
track, wrestling, cross country, and
soccer for one season after the coach
left. His father was the athletic director
at Daniel Boone and chose him to fill
in as soccer coach for that one year.
Weaver also ran a tutoring room at
the high school for 11 years as well.
Currently, Weaver is the groundskeeper
at Daniel Boone Middle School and
has a daughter in 11th grade in the
Hempfield School District.
Weaver is proud to be a part of that
memorable 1982 wrestling team, and
learned a lot from his senior season in
high school.
“The main take away was that if
you keep working success will come,”
Weaver said.
