new stadium dedicated At homecoming
By Jana Mahon
As the leaves began to change colors and the air turned
brisk, students at Daniel Boone High School could hardly
contain their excitement for the upcoming fall activities—
especially Homecoming.
Scheduled for September 29th, the annual powder puff
game took place on the school‘s brand-new stadium and
kicked off Homecoming festivities. The football game
against visiting Pottsville, the dance, and the DB Varsity
Club’s Wall of Fame ceremony were held a few days later
on the weekend of October 1st and 2nd.
The annual powder puff game pits two
teams of senior girls (Pink and Purple) in
a game of flag football. The pink team, the
defending champions, stepped onto the field
ready to go. However, in the end, the purple
team came out on top 31-24.
Erin McGrEal, a member of the purple
team, was positive they would take the title
with all the time her team put in.
“We practiced a couple of days after school,
and we also got together on the Sunday before
the game, so we were pretty confident,”
McGreal said.
Only two days later the Blazers football
team took on Pottsville in the annual
Homecoming game. It was an intense contest
from beginning to end. In the very last minute sophomore andy ricci kicked the winning field goal to give the Blazers a
thrilling 16-14 win.
Ricci was amazed at what he had just accomplished. “It was a rush of adrenaline that I have never experienced before,” Ricci
said. “It was an amazing feeling that not until I woke up the next morning, [had] I absorbed the full effect of what I did for
this school.”
During halftime the Homecoming Court, including the king and queen, were announced and they all walked out onto the new
turf. The 2010 Daniel Boone High Homecoming Court is: aaron BallMEr, Brandon BEnjaMin, KylE SchuErGEr,
Superintendent’s Corner
As part of my ongoing effort to keep our community informed
of what is happening in our district, I want to focus
this message on the upcoming development of the 2011-
2012 budget for the district. Last year
was a particularly difficult fiscal year
as our state and national economy continued
to struggle. The development
of next year’s budget will present yet
another set of challenges as we wade
through this difficult economic and fiscal
environment.
The same factors that impacted our budget decisions last
year continue to represent fiscal challenges and, in some
cases, there are even greater challenges than last year. We
continue to experience reduced revenues and will be facing
increases in our fixed costs and contractual obligations.
Investment income continues to remain flat and we are
expecting a significant decrease in state revenues, based on
feedback from the newly elected governor. The Act 1 Index
has dropped significantly since last year, which severely
limits the amount of revenue the district can raise via tax
increases. Overall, the fiscal realities that confront us will require
a careful and thorough examination of our entire educational
program and all district programs and operations.
The school board and administrative team have already
started the hard work of trying to meet the challenges that
we know face us as we try to develop a budget for the 2011-
2012 school year. We know difficult decisions that impact
the district’s fiscal standing and educational program will
need to be made. We invite you to provide your feedback
and ideas at our public meetings over the next six months
as we work through the process of providing the most costeffective
programs we can based on the resources that we
will have available to us.
Sincerely,
Dr. Gary L. Otto
teammate Chronicles Undefeated season
By Ben Linsey
In 1982 the Daniel Boone wrestling
team accomplished something that no
Blazer mat team has been able to since
then. During that season, the Blazers
lost none of their 16 team matches – a
season of perfection.
“At the beginning of the season, we
knew it was possible…we knew we
had a shot,” said douG WEaVEr, a
member of the team back then and a
Daniel Boone groundskeeper now.
at Daniel Boone Middle School.
Ironically, a teammate, Eric
Daniel Boone High School.
Weaver was a member of that
team, which was honored during
Homecoming festivities Oct. 1 by being
placed on Daniel Boone Varsity
Club’s Wall of Fame.
capacities for the Daniel Boone Area
The 1982 Daniel Boone wrestling team was honored during Homecoming activities
Oct. 1. Members that were able to attend were: (top row, left to right) WaynE
a part of that team and wrestled from
105 to 126 pounds. The wrestling
team was coming off of a year in which
they had only two losses and nearly
everyone was coming back.
“We took it a match at a time,”
said Weaver, who was a co-captain
of the team along with wrestler PaT
KanE. One of those matches included
a championship match including a
wrestler from Oley Valley who was undefeated
at 21-0 with 19 pins. Weaver’s
job was simply not to get pinned, and
even though he lost, he avoided the
pin and the Blazers came out on top.
The team’s coach was Weaver’s father
Don, which added to the younger
Weaver’s amazing experience.
“In addition to being outstanding
athletes, ten members of the team
were also members of the National
Honor Society,” said head coach don
WEaVEr. “So much of our success
came from the athletes’ dedication and
the leadership of our veteran wrestlers.”
The younger Weaver had mixed
emotions when the Blazers won their
last group meet.
“It was a combination of elation and
relief,” he said. The relief was simply
4
that he could eat again. Weaver, during
the season, needed to get down
to a lower weight class to help Daniel
Boone win.
Weaver went on to college at Penn
State for one semester and then transferred
to West Chester University.
He began working at his old high
school, Daniel Boone, and coached
track, wrestling, cross country, and
soccer for one season after the coach
left. His father was the athletic director
at Daniel Boone and chose him to fill
in as soccer coach for that one year.
Weaver also ran a tutoring room at
the high school for 11 years as well.
Currently, Weaver is the groundskeeper
at Daniel Boone Middle School and
has a daughter in 11th grade in the
Hempfield School District.
Weaver is proud to be a part of that
memorable 1982 wrestling team, and
learned a lot from his senior season in
high school.
“The main take away was that if
you keep working success will come,”
Weaver said.
John Perella Lends Skills For Local Home Makeover
By samantha eigenbrot
An amazing gift was given this summer
to recently widowed mother,
Trisha Urban of Tilden Township—a
new home. She was surprised by Ty
Pennington and the design team of the
reality-TV show “Extreme Makeover:
Home Edition” at a carnival at the
Cochranville Fire Company in August.
One week later, Daniel Boone Food
Service Director john PErElla considered
himself lucky to have participated
in the life-changing project.
“As I was walking through the house
just before the family came home I
realized, for the first time, that we
did not just build a house—we built a
home,” Perella said.
Perella was one of hundreds of volunteers
from Berks County to help
build Urban and her year-and-a-halfold
daughter Cora a new home on the
site of her ancient farmhouse.
The television show based on the
project was aired on ABC the night of
Sunday, October 24.
Perella was one of six members of
what “Extreme Makeover” calls the
Cobra Team. Each volunteer is assigned
to one of the local project managers
as their assistant, Perella said. He
acted as a troubleshooter.
“As the build progressed, anything
that was missed or overlooked by the
tradesmen was my responsibility to fix
in order to keep the build on schedule,”
Perella said. He added that the
tasks included anything from organizing
volunteers to keeping the work site
clean to re-framing walls to accommodate
last-minute design changes.
“I was there every day from
2 p.m. to 2 a.m.,” he said.
Perella became Daniel
Boone’s Food Service Director
in 2009. He explained that
while growing up he lived
in an old farmhouse; he was
constantly helping his dad in
restoration projects and has
“done just about everything
you can do to a house.” He
added that during college he
worked in a wall-panel plant
at a lumberyard and also as
an electrician. “Although
construction is not my profession,
I am fairly handy,”
Perella said.
The popular “Extreme
Makeover: Home Edition” is
obviously an emotional experience for
all involved, Perella included. He said
the significance of the project really
6
hit him when the family was shown
the home.
“During the week, I was so concentrated
on just getting everything done
that I really didn’t have time to stop
and think about what we were doing,”
Perella said.
Pictures of Trisha, Cora, and Trisha’s
husband Andy—who died of a heart
attack just hours before Cora was
born—were strategically placed in almost
every room. Each step leading
to the second floor was numbered so
Cora could count them as she climbed.
Sections of the mural Cora’s father
painted on the nursery walls of the
old home were displayed around the
house.
Perella said when the bus finally
pulled away to reveal the new home,
knowing what the Urban family was
about to walk into and how much it
was going to change their lives for the
better, tears were on everyone’s face—
including his.
“Let’s just say, I was glad I had my
sunglasses on,” Perella said.
New Flag Waves Over Monocacy
A new star-spangled banner was hoisted at the Monocacy Elementary
Center in a flag-raising ceremony on Friday, September 24. The event
was organized to present a new flag to the school by PTC Vice President
MrS. KEri linSEnBiGlEr. The new flag was donated by rEP. daVid
