To: ARRO Executive Committee
Statement of Interest
Collaboration, leadership, service and excellence are values I hold dearly and will seek to implement if I
am honored to serve on the ARRO committee. As one of only two residents in my current program, I
realized the importance of those values in my service and training. Despite attempts at standardization
by governing bodies regulating medical education, such as ACGME and other entities, the experience is
highly variable from one program to another; moreover, although program directors establish a system
to bring good education to the programs, it’s ultimately in the hands of the residents to shape their own
experience. That being said, I’m very interested in optimizing my own residency experience as well as
that of all my colleagues both internally and external of my program.
As a professional in multiple capacities prior to attending medical school, I am thankful to have the
leadership and service experience necessary to effectively interact with a large and diverse set of
individuals. My years in research and managing projects, with resultant publications and presentations,
gave me an understanding and a deep respect for researchers and medical scientists. As a consultant at
PricewaterhouseCoopers in the Health Industries Advisory division, I had the opportunity to interact
with leaders and businesses to help them shape and optimize their organizations. As an educator who
established a non-profit tutoring organization, I realized the importance of setting the ground-work for a
solid education, training and growth.
As a member of executive/advisory committees and boards, I have seen how individuals can work
together as a team to bring about excellence and advancements. I thrive in overcoming hurdles and I
rejoice in small successes leading to overall improvements, but I’ll always strive for large positive
impacts by and for both my colleagues and myself. With this same relentless passion I added to these
committees, I would also like to contribute to the ARRO Executive Committee, amidst the like-minded
individuals committed to the same career path.
I am driven by a vision of teamwork and strong passion for bringing the “best” care to cancer patients
across the nation and ultimately the world. In order to accomplish that, the upcoming generation’s
trainees in Radiation Oncology, amongst other oncology fields, must obtain the best training, tools and
resources. I want to take part in making that happen. It would be an honor and a pleasure to serve as a
member of ARRO’s Executive Committee and to realize all its goals.

COMMUNITY SERVICE / TEACHING / LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE
Healthcare:
Dec 2009 – present Santa Verena Charity, Planning Committee and Leader, Diocese of Los Angeles, Los Angeles,
CA
The major division of this charity organization is to serve the medically indigent and needy in the
United States and all over the world (including Africa, Brazil, Mexico). At the beginning of every year,
we prepare an annual general plan to detail the areas of action for the year and allocate the resources
accordingly. I’m in charge of leading traveling groups of physicians, medical students, social workers,
and other volunteers in setting up and working with local clinics and hospitals. I also have my duties of
seeing patients and presenting to volunteer attendings in the areas of general medicine and in reading
radiographs.
Jan 2007 – Jun 2011 UCLA Healthcare Collaborative, Executive Committee Medical Student Representative, UCLA,
Los Angeles, CA

N. Hanna C.V. - Page 4
The Healthcare Collaborative at UCLA brings together students, alumni, faculty and staff of the
School of Public Health, The Anderson School of Management at UCLA, the School of Medicine at
UCLA, and members of the Southern California health care community. The Collaborative strives to
facilitate the exchange of information, ideas and services thereby educating our health care
professionals and organizations in California and at large. As the medical student representative on the
executive committee, I advised and assisted in executing events such as symposia with expert leaders
and dynamic speakers on important topics in healthcare
Jul 2006 – Jun 2011 Various leadership and volunteer commitments to underserved:
• UCLA Mobile Clinic, Medical Student Volunteer, Hollywood, CA
In conjunction with the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition (GWHFC), The Mobile Clinic Project
at UCLA is a student-run initiative with the goal of providing basic health care and social services to a
homeless population in Los Angeles, namely in the West Hollywood area. Weekly medical services
are provided in a street setting (with privately mobile exam rooms) of an industrial area of Los
Angeles. The project is run entirely by an interdisciplinary group of UCLA students from the schools
of public health, medicine, and the undergraduate college. As a regular volunteer, I help provide
emergency care, follow-up, and counseling to patients under the supervision of a volunteer attending
physician
• Step-up Clinic for teenagers, Los Angeles, CA
• Common Ground Free Clinic
• LIGA medical services in Mexico City, Mexico
Sept 2006 – Jun 2009 Medical Alumni Association, Medical Student Representative, UCLA DGSOM, Los Angeles, CA
Represent the class to the Medical Alumni Association in Board Meetings. With the support of the
Board of Directors, I organized a “Careers in Medicine Conference” in January 2007, which was well
attended by 250 medical students as well as 50 physicians of all specialties. I helped raise funds for
scholarships for incoming students and proposed innovative ideas to obtain alum support for our
current class
Sep 2006 – Aug 2008 Health Care Symposium, Head Coordinator and Director of Speakers, UCLA DGSOM, Los
Angeles, CA
An annual Southern California symposium organized and presented by five medical student
symposium directors at the UCLA School of Medicine with cutting edge topics and prominent
speakers each year. My specific role was to find expert speakers in field related to the topic of the year.
This year (12 th Annual HCS) our topic was “Markets, Patients and Providers: Healthcare Reform
2008” and this year’s symposium set a record attendance of 800 and brought expectations to a new
level. This year’s speakers included Dr John McDonough, Director of “Health Care For All” in
Massachusetts, Thomas Priselac, CEO of Cedars Sinai, Duane Dauner, President of the California
Hospital Association, and Bob Brook, Director of RAND. Symposium speakers in the past have
included other prominent individuals such as Dr. David Satcher, MD, 16th Surgeon General of the
United States, Al Gore, Michael Dukakis, and Dr. Robert Ross, MD, President and CEO, The
California Endowment
