Survey In<strong>for</strong>mation<br />

These areas are characterised by privately owned properties facing directly onto the street. The<br />

research behind the project identified the peak pedestrian hours <strong>for</strong> this area type.<br />

Peak <strong>Pedestrian</strong> Hours (Minimum Survey Hours)<br />

14:00 to 18:00<br />

There is no significant directional bias found in residential areas. The exception to this are areas<br />

where a school is located where there may be a bias found as pupils walk to and from school.<br />

Recommended Survey Hours<br />

07:00 to 19:00<br />

It is possible to have breaks at 10:30 to 11:30 and 14:30 to 15:30<br />

Recommended Sample Duration<br />

5 minutes every half an hour on footways 5 samples every half an hour on crossings<br />

Recommended Sample Days<br />

One weekday (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and as a comparator, Saturday (09:00 to 16:00)<br />

School Holidays<br />

If there is a school in the immediate area, the site should be surveyed during the school term.<br />

Longer sample periods are required at the start and end of the school day (30 minute sample)<br />

Weather<br />

Flows are likely to be affected by poor weather. If weather is poor there may be a need to repeat<br />

the survey <strong>for</strong> the minimum survey hours<br />
