Voith WearCare 500
Reduces bearing wear significantly
Voith WearCare 500 is a lubricant for applications involving highperformance
universal joint shafts subject to high specific loads.
Thanks to its special characteristics, this lubricant promotes maximum
bearing life while lengthening the intervals between lubrications.
Voith WearCare 500 thus combines all of the char ac ter istics
needed for use in rolling mill applications.
Relevant factors when determining life cycle costs of universal joint shafts
Product n Product / replacement part costs
n Installation and removal costs
n Costs resulting from down time / loss of production
Maintenance n Personnel costs incurred for maintenance and lubrication
Operating fluid n Lubricant costs
Determining the appropriate lubricant requires consideration of all costs
The challenges
Bearings in universal joint shafts have a special
charac teristic. They execute an oscillating, or reversing,
motion, not a continuous motion in one
direction. The rolling elements oscillate around a
pivot point, successively forcing the lubricant out
of the gap at the surface. Under certain circumstances,
the protective lubricating film can break
down, leading to a condition of mixed friction.
Moreover, for every one rotation of the universal
joint shaft, the rolling elements are accelerated
and decelerated twice. The risk of slip, which can
lead to wear in the bearing races, is especially
high at the reversal points.
Use of a suitable lubricant promotes optimal tribological
conditions for operation of universal
joint shafts, contributing significantly to longer
bearing life. The results: longer service life and
thus lower costs for the operator. Conventional
lubricants quickly reach the limits of their capabilities
in the face of such challenging operating
con ditions.

Field trial: Metal particles in the bearing lubricant of a high-performance universal joint shaft used in the main drive
of a rolling mill. It takes 24 months for the same number of metal particles to appear in the Voith WearCare 500
compared to 15 months for a standard lubricant.
Voith development engineers have combined
their universal joint shaft know-how with the tribological
know-how of renowned bearing and
lubricant manufacturers. The result of this cooper
ation is an innovative and exclusive lubricant
– Voith WearCare 500 – with properties far
above those of conventional standard lubricants.
WearCare 500 forms a protective coating on the
rolling elements and the surface of the bearing
races with which they are in contact. In the
course of operation, this fi lmy coating bonds to
Operating time in months
Extended
operating time
the surfaces and provides long-term protection.
The contacting components are no longer subject
to metal-to-metal contact, and accordingly the
abrasive wear is reduced to a minimum. During
the run-in phase, a signifi cant amount of wear
debris forms due to surface smoothing in the new
bearings. WearCare reduces this signifi cantly.
This means fewer contaminating metal particles
in the lubricant – bearing life and the service life
of the universal joint shaft are both extended.
Benefits during operation
In the case of large universal joint shafts, the capital
cost of the product is significantly greater than
expenditures for maintenance and operating supplies.
The primary objective in any company is to
operate equipment economically by keeping life
cycle costs (LCC) low. Use of improved lubri cants
extends product life cycles and re duces LC costs.
At the same time, system availability is increased.
