The history of <strong>Voith</strong> <strong>Turbo</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Crailsheim</strong> began <strong>in</strong> 1956 with the relocation of<br />

coupl<strong>in</strong>g manufactur<strong>in</strong>g from the orig<strong>in</strong>al factory <strong>in</strong> Heidenheim. Only a few<br />

employees were <strong>in</strong>volved with establish<strong>in</strong>g the site at that time. Production<br />

began <strong>in</strong> 1958 with 229 employees <strong>in</strong> the newly constructed facility.<br />

With its focus on research and development, <strong>Voith</strong> <strong>Turbo</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Crailsheim</strong><br />

has s<strong>in</strong>ce then succeeded time and aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> plac<strong>in</strong>g new and <strong>in</strong>novative<br />

products <strong>in</strong>to the market.<br />

Today, the product groups "Variable Speed Drives", "Start-up Components"<br />

and "Electronic Drive Systems" with sales, development, and manufactur<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Hydrodynamic Solutions<br />

from <strong>Voith</strong> <strong>Turbo</strong><br />

Hermann Fött<strong>in</strong>ger developed the<br />

Fött<strong>in</strong>ger transformer <strong>in</strong> 1905 and<br />

thus the idea of transmitt<strong>in</strong>g mechanical<br />

power by means of a liquid.<br />

This permitted <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itely variable<br />

conversion of speed and torque –<br />

the hydrodynamic pr<strong>in</strong>ciple is born.<br />

This hydrodynamic pr<strong>in</strong>ciple revolutionized<br />

technology and made <strong>Voith</strong><br />

<strong>Turbo</strong> one of the world‘s lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />

companies. For the first time it was<br />

Most of <strong>Voith</strong> <strong>Turbo</strong>‘s products employ this hydrodynamic pr<strong>in</strong>ciple: In an<br />

enclosed hous<strong>in</strong>g conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a liquid, two bladed wheels (the pump wheel<br />

and the turb<strong>in</strong>e wheel) face one another but are not <strong>in</strong> direct contact. The<br />

impeller is connected to the driv<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e, the turb<strong>in</strong>e wheel to the driven<br />

mach<strong>in</strong>e. The rotation of the pump wheel sets the liquid <strong>in</strong> motion. The<br />

liquid transmits the mechanical power from the blades on the impeller to<br />

the blades on the turb<strong>in</strong>e wheel. The only connect<strong>in</strong>g element between the<br />

bladed wheels is the liquid. This unique feature provides the basis for the<br />

wear-free and smooth power transmission associated with hydrodynamics.<br />

On the one hand, the powerful test fi elds <strong>in</strong> <strong>Crailsheim</strong> are used to test the<br />

feasibility of new product ideas. At the same time, they are used to ensure<br />

the quality of products currently be<strong>in</strong>g produced.<br />

The test fi elds offer power levels of up to 7 megawatts – this exceeds the<br />

average power demand of a city the size of <strong>Crailsheim</strong> by about 30 %. However,<br />

thanks to an <strong>in</strong>novative energy recovery concept, this enormous amount<br />

of energy is not lost: Almost the entire amount of electricity needed for test<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is returned to the grid. This is economical and protects the environment.<br />
