Banquet Honors Contributions of Cicero’s Parent Patrol
It’s a testament to what can begin with just a few people and a desire to make a difference.
Cicero’s Parent Patrol began as just five parents from Unity School, concerned for the welfare of their Town and
wanting to do what they could to make a difference. Those five parents began to help monitor the streets as
children were on their way to and from school, helping to ensure that their commute was safe and free from gang
influence.
Today, the Cicero Parent Patrol boasts more than 100 members who are always noticeable in their yellow shirts or
yellow ponchos. Thanks to the dedication of Cicero parents, there are now Cicero Parent Patrol groups that help
watch over Wilson, Unity, Warren Park, Columbus East, Roosevelt, Goodwin, Lincoln, Liberty, Burnham, McKinley,
Cicero East, and Cicero West schools.”
“These parents who make up the Cicero Parent Patrol are a shining example of how the New Cicero works together
to build a better and safer community for our young people,” said President Dominick. “They provide the perfect
citizen compliment to our enhanced police patrols and other anti-gang, pro-public safety initiatives run by the
Town.”
“The Cicero Parent Patrol reminds us that there is no limit to what we can accomplish when we work together
towards a better future.”
Cicero Designates Gethsemane Lutheran Church a Historial Site During
Their 100th Anniversary
Cicero has a rich and diverse cultural heritage. One of the ways that this rich
heritage is represented is in the history of the Town’s houses of worship.
Recently, Cicero Town President Larry Dominick and the Cicero Town Board
honored one of those long-standing churches — Gethsemane Evangelical
Lutheran Church at 1937 South 50th Avenue — with a designation as a
historical site as the church marked it’s 100th anniversary.
Gethsemane began its life in a store front room at 5129 West Cermak Road
in Cicero when twelve people met there for a Lutheran worship service on
March 24th, 1912. On June 30th, 1912, Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran
Church was officially organized as a congregation. This year, the church and
it’s congregation celebrate 100 years as a important and vital part of our
Cicero community.
“Our strong faith communities are an extremely important part of the
fabric of the ‘New Cicero,’” said President Dominick. “I want to personally
congratulate Gethsemane Lutheran Church and Pastor Diane Johnson as
they mark 100 years serving Cicero’s faithful citizens and enriching our
community.”
