2012 CeaseFire Week in Cicero Reminds Us
that Cicero is Winning the War on Gangs
When Cicero Town President Larry
Dominick took office in 2005,
he made fighting the scourge of
gangs — and the violence and
drugs that come with them — a top
priority of his administration. The
annual CeaseFire Week in Cicero
has become a shining example of
the success of President Dominick’s
anti-gang efforts.
This year, President Dominick was
joined by Town officials, members
of Cicero’s law enforcement
community, representatives from
Corazon Community Services and
CeaseFire for this year’s CeaseFire
Week in Cicero, running from June
18th through June 22nd.
Sponsored each June by President
Dominick and the Town of Cicero,
CeaseFire Week reinforces to Cicero
children that gang life is a dead
end through featuring positive,
youth-oriented programs including
soccer, volleyball, softball and 3-on-3
basketball tournaments, as well as a
“family fun festival” and movie in the
park night.
The Cicero Town News July 12
From the President’s Desk
by Cicero Town President Larry Dominick
Dear Cicero residents,
I want to thank everyone who helped
put on yet another exceptional
CeaseFire Week in Cicero.
With this year’s CeaseFire week in
Cicero, it’s a good time to reflect on
just how far we’ve come in recent
years in stemming the tide of gang
violence and the drug trade on our
streets. Our pro-active policing
methods, along with the advent
of the Gang Crimes Tactical Unit,
diversion programs to help reclaim
young kids from the clutches of the
nefarious gangs, and communitycentered
Town programming to
provide our children alternatives to
the gang lifestyle and demonstrate
that making that choice is choosing a
dead-end life are all helping us to win
the war on the gangs.
When I took office as Cicero Town
President, I made fighting back
against the gangs a top priority
of my administration. One of
the fundamental core duties of
government is to provide for public
safety. And, there can be no public
safety with street gangs running the
streets.
In the year before I took office in
2005, there were 14 gang-related
homicides in Cicero. Last year, thanks
to our policing and community
engagement strategies, there wasn’t
a single gang-related homicide in our
Town. Not one.
Similarly, crime statistics are down
across the board. This is a clear
testament to what we can accomplish
when we are working together to build
a New Cicero that is free from the threat
of gangs and the violence they bring
with them.
+++++
With the return of the beautiful
summer weather, that means it’s
time once again for the return of the
Summer in the Park Festivals.
This year, we’ll be hosting the Summer
in the Park Festivals events on Mondays
in the courtyard at Cicero Town Hall,
with the Wednesday and Sunday events
being held at the beautiful Cicero
Community Park at 34th and Laramie.
It’s always fun to enjoy the beautiful
weather with everyone, so I look
forward to seeing you out there. These
kinds of community togetherness events
are an important part of our town, and I
hope that you’ll enjoy them throughout
the summer!
+++++
With the weather heating up, it’s
important to remember to stay cool. To
make sure that everyone can, the Town
has set up cooling centers for everyone
to beat the heat.
The Cicero Public Safety Building is
open every day until 4pm, the Cicero
Community Center is open every
day until 8pm, and the Cicero Police
Headquarters and the Cicero SOS
Headquarters are both open 24-hours
a day.
As the weather heats up, please be
mindful of your neighbors, particularly
our senior citizens. Be a good neighbor
and check in on our Town’s seniors to
make sure that they are staying cool.
July 12 The Cicero Town News
It’s just something we can all do to help
one another in the New Cicero.
+++++
With 4th of July weekend approaching,
it’s almost time for Cicero’s Annual
American Fest.
Our Town has become known for
exceptional festival celebrations, and
American Fest is no different. On July
6th-8th, we’ll all gather at 34th &
Laramie to celebrate the freedoms and
all enjoy by virtue of being Americans.
We’ll hear great music from Jim Peterik
and The Ides of March, HiFi Superstar,
The Meteors, and many other great
musical acts. We’ll also have a special
appearance by Chicago Blackhawks
legends Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Tony
Esposito, and Denis Savard, who will be
signing autographs and taking pictures
at the Bobby Hull Cicero Community Ice
and Roller Rink.
And then, of course, there’s the great
food, the carnival games, the fun and
exciting rides and much, much more.
I look forward to seeing you out there!
Sincerely,
Larry Dominick
Cicero Town President
Summer in the Park Festivals Kick-off Summer of Fun in Cicero
Part of building President Larry Dominick’s vision for the “New Cicero” meant providing new public green spaces where
families could gather and spend time with each other and with their neighbors.
One of those new spaces that has been realized under President Dominick’s leadership is the Cicero Community Park at 34th
and Laramie. And, every summer, that Park is home to Cicero’s annual Summer in the Park Festivals.
The Summer in the Park festivals annually feature family-friendly programming, such as movies, seasonal festivals and
celebrations, an eclectic selection of live music performances from all genres and styles, comedy shows, and much, much
more.
“It’s important that Cicero families have a place where they can gather and have fun,” noted Dominick. “Cicero Community
Park is one of those places and the Summer in the Park Festivals ensure that there is always something fun and interesting
happening in Cicero that adults and children alike can enjoy.”
This year, Summer in the Park Festival events will be held on Monday evenings in the courtyard at Cicero Town Hall, with
Wednesday and Sunday events being held at Cicero Community Park.
“These events are always a lot of fun, and I really enjoy the opportunity to spend a beautiful summer evening with my family
and with all the Cicero families who come out to enjoy them,” said Dominick.
2012 CeaseFire Week in Cicero Reminds Us that Cicero is
Winning the War on Gangs
At the kickoff ceremony and press conference, President Dominick accentuated how his anti-gang strategies have
made Cicero a safer place. In the year before Dominick took office, there were 14 gang-related homicides in Cicero.
Thanks to innovative new policing strategies and the advent of the Gang Crimes Tactical Unit, last year Cicero
saw zero gang-related homicides. This was one factor in House Hunt, Inc., one of the largest online real estate
operations, to naming Cicero one of the Top 20 Safest Cities in American in 2011.
Since Cicero is leading the way in fighting gangs and gang violence, Dominick extended an offer to Chicago Mayor
Rahm Emanuel to help with the city of Chicago’s surging gang problems.
“What happens in Chicago impacts the Town of Cicero and all of the neighboring suburbs,” said Dominick. “So, if
Chicago is more successful in combatting gangs then suburban communities will be safer, too. That’s why I want
to offer to a hand of assistance to Mayor Emanuel, so that he can learn about what we’ve been doing here in Cicero
that has been so successful in taking the fight to the street gangs — and winning.”
This year’s CeaseFire Week in Cicero, just like all the others, ended with the annual Peace March through the streets
of Cicero.
“Our presence in the streets reminds these gangs that the streets belong to us, not to them,” noted Dominick. “They
are reminded every time they see our increase police patrols, our Save Our Streets Task Force, our social service
programs like Corazon and CeaseFire, and especially our great citizens out in our streets, that these streets are going
to be a place of peace and community and not hubs of drugs and violence.”
Dominick thanked everyone who was involved in planning this year’s CeaseFire Week in Cicero, especially the
Town’s Police and Fire Departments, the Gang Crimes Tactical Unit, the S.O.S. Task Force, Corazon Community
Services, and CeaseFire Cicero.
Cicero Town President Larry Dominick, along with the Cicero Town Board and the Town’s Waggin’ Tails Animal
Shelter hosted the inaugural Pet Parade at Cicero Community Park. The event was held as a part of Cicero’s annual
CeaseFire Week, an anti-gang and pro-community week held every year to provide positive, family-oriented
programming to stress the importance of Cicero’s young people steering clear of the dead-end life of gangs and
drugs.
The first ever Pet Parade saw many of Cicero’s furry friends dressed up in their favorite costumes, and paraded by
their owners in a special showcase.
Waggin’ Tails Shelter and the Town’s Department of Animal Welfare is another department and set of Town services
that has been expanded under Town President Larry Dominick. Cicero’s Animal Welfare Department regularly
provides free pet microchipping services, services to help locate lost pets, wildlife trapping, and pet-give up
assistance for owners who can no longer properly care for their pets.
Cicero’s Waggin’ Tails Shelter always has a great selection of furry friends who are looking for a good home. So,
remember, the next time that you are looking for a new pet — don’t shop, adopt from Cicero’s Waggin’ Tails Shelter.
Banquet Honors Contributions of Cicero’s Parent Patrol
It’s a testament to what can begin with just a few people and a desire to make a difference.
Cicero’s Parent Patrol began as just five parents from Unity School, concerned for the welfare of their Town and
wanting to do what they could to make a difference. Those five parents began to help monitor the streets as
children were on their way to and from school, helping to ensure that their commute was safe and free from gang
influence.
Today, the Cicero Parent Patrol boasts more than 100 members who are always noticeable in their yellow shirts or
yellow ponchos. Thanks to the dedication of Cicero parents, there are now Cicero Parent Patrol groups that help
watch over Wilson, Unity, Warren Park, Columbus East, Roosevelt, Goodwin, Lincoln, Liberty, Burnham, McKinley,
Cicero East, and Cicero West schools.”
“These parents who make up the Cicero Parent Patrol are a shining example of how the New Cicero works together
to build a better and safer community for our young people,” said President Dominick. “They provide the perfect
citizen compliment to our enhanced police patrols and other anti-gang, pro-public safety initiatives run by the
Town.”
“The Cicero Parent Patrol reminds us that there is no limit to what we can accomplish when we work together
towards a better future.”
Cicero Designates Gethsemane Lutheran Church a Historial Site During
Their 100th Anniversary
Cicero has a rich and diverse cultural heritage. One of the ways that this rich
heritage is represented is in the history of the Town’s houses of worship.
Recently, Cicero Town President Larry Dominick and the Cicero Town Board
honored one of those long-standing churches — Gethsemane Evangelical
Lutheran Church at 1937 South 50th Avenue — with a designation as a
historical site as the church marked it’s 100th anniversary.
Gethsemane began its life in a store front room at 5129 West Cermak Road
in Cicero when twelve people met there for a Lutheran worship service on
March 24th, 1912. On June 30th, 1912, Gethsemane Evangelical Lutheran
Church was officially organized as a congregation. This year, the church and
it’s congregation celebrate 100 years as a important and vital part of our
Cicero community.
“Our strong faith communities are an extremely important part of the
fabric of the ‘New Cicero,’” said President Dominick. “I want to personally
congratulate Gethsemane Lutheran Church and Pastor Diane Johnson as
they mark 100 years serving Cicero’s faithful citizens and enriching our
community.”
are brought to you by the
Town of Cicero Health
Department & the Health
Committee of the Cicero
Youth Task Force (CYTF).
Summer is here and kids are out
of school! That means families
are spending time outdoors,
enjoying the beautiful summer
weather. However, when we are
spending time outdoors, we
need to consider the hidden
danger of sun damage.
Skin cancer is the most common
type of cancer in the U.S. and UV
rays from the sun are the
primary cause. Melanoma, the
most serious type of skin cancer,
will account for more than
75,000 cases of skin cancer in
2012.
These are some common causes
of skin cancer:
-Unprotected and/or excessive
exposure to ultraviolet (UV)
radiation (sunlight or tanning
booths)
-Pale complexion (difficulty
tanning, easily sunburned, natural
red or blonde hair color)
-Occupational exposures to coal,
tar, pitch, creosote, arsenic
compounds, or radium
-Skin cancer running in the family
-Multiple or unusual moles
-Severe sunburns in the past
Now that you know the causes,
make sure to avoid long
exposure to intense sunlight and
practice sun safety.
Try to avoid the sun
between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Seek shade: Look for shade,
JULY
HEALTH
HAPPENINGS
Get Hip on Your Health!
UV Safety Month
especially in the middle of
the day when the sun’s rays
are strongest.
Slip on a shirt: Cover up
with protective and
comfortable clothing to
guard as much skin as possible
when you are out in the
sun.
Slop on sunscreen: Use
sunscreen and lip balm with
a sun protection factor (SPF)
of 15 or higher. Apply a
generous amount of
sunscreen (about a palm full)
and reapply every 2 hours
after swimming, toweling
dry, or sweating.
Slap on a hat: Cover your
head with a wide-brimmed
hat, shading your face, ears,
and neck.
Put on sunglasses: Wear
sunglasses with 99% to 100%
UV absorption to provide
optimal protection for your
eyes and the surrounding
skin.
Follow these practices to protect
your skin even on cloudy or
overcast days, because UV rays
travel through clouds. Avoid
other sources of UV light, which
may come from tanning beds and
sun lamps. If you practice these
rules for sun safety, you will be
protecting your skin from cancer.
So, get ready for summer by
staying safe and protecting your
skin. You can still have fun in the
summer sun, as long as you
remember these safety measures!
Ask Dr. Ron...
Q: I have a stabbing pain in my back with
a burning pain in the back of my leg
and calf. Is this "Sciatica", and what
exactly is "Sciatica"?
Dr: Sciatica is the name for the inflammation and
irritation of the Sciatic Nerve that courses
through the tissues of the buttocks and legs.
It is a large nerve about the size of your
little finger. When pressure or irritation affects
the Sciatic nerve it will cause symptoms into
the buttocks and legs such as numbness,
tingling, burning pain, sharp pain, or weakness.
Sciatica is commonly caused by pressure on
the nerves exiting the spine (Pinched Nerve)
or muscles that are tight and squeeze the nerve.
Because a pinched nerve can be caused by
several factors it is very wise to seek medical
care to rule out any Disc herniations or severe
spinal arthritis. Active therapy in my office is
extremely helpful in reduction of symptoms
and possibly even healing the Sciatica.
Q: My shoulder hurts when I reach into
the cupboard for items or when I reach
out my arm for anything.
What do you think?
Dr Because the shoulder is an extremely mobile
joint a thorough evaluation must be done to
properly diagnose any pain. A very common
cause of shoulder pain is a Rotator Cuff
Impingement. This happens when the rotator
cuff muscle becomes irritated from repeat use
or an abrupt injury. The irritation then becomes
worse as the muscles and tendons continue to
be used. The muscle actually becomes
pinched between two bones in the shoulder.
This type of pain can begin as a slight pain
but can quickly escalate to severe pain and
possible damage to the rotator cuff muscle.
Physical therapy can greatly increase the
health of the shoulder. If physical therapy is
started early the problem can resolve completely.
