From the President’s Desk by Cicero Town President Larry Dominick Dear Cicero residents, I want to thank everyone who helped put on yet another exceptional CeaseFire Week in Cicero. With this year’s CeaseFire week in Cicero, it’s a good time to reflect on just how far we’ve come in recent years in stemming the tide of gang violence and the drug trade on our streets. Our pro-active policing methods, along with the advent of the Gang Crimes Tactical Unit, diversion programs to help reclaim young kids from the clutches of the nefarious gangs, and communitycentered Town programming to provide our children alternatives to the gang lifestyle and demonstrate that making that choice is choosing a dead-end life are all helping us to win the war on the gangs. When I took office as Cicero Town President, I made fighting back against the gangs a top priority of my administration. One of the fundamental core duties of government is to provide for public safety. And, there can be no public safety with street gangs running the streets. In the year before I took office in 2005, there were 14 gang-related homicides in Cicero. Last year, thanks to our policing and community engagement strategies, there wasn’t a single gang-related homicide in our Town. Not one. Similarly, crime statistics are down across the board. This is a clear testament to what we can accomplish when we are working together to build a New Cicero that is free from the threat of gangs and the violence they bring with them. +++++ With the return of the beautiful summer weather, that means it’s time once again for the return of the Summer in the Park Festivals. This year, we’ll be hosting the Summer in the Park Festivals events on Mondays in the courtyard at Cicero Town Hall, with the Wednesday and Sunday events being held at the beautiful Cicero Community Park at 34th and Laramie. It’s always fun to enjoy the beautiful weather with everyone, so I look forward to seeing you out there. These kinds of community togetherness events are an important part of our town, and I hope that you’ll enjoy them throughout the summer! +++++ With the weather heating up, it’s important to remember to stay cool. To make sure that everyone can, the Town has set up cooling centers for everyone to beat the heat. The Cicero Public Safety Building is open every day until 4pm, the Cicero Community Center is open every day until 8pm, and the Cicero Police Headquarters and the Cicero SOS Headquarters are both open 24-hours a day. As the weather heats up, please be mindful of your neighbors, particularly our senior citizens. Be a good neighbor and check in on our Town’s seniors to make sure that they are staying cool. July 12 The Cicero Town News It’s just something we can all do to help one another in the New Cicero. +++++ With 4th of July weekend approaching, it’s almost time for Cicero’s Annual American Fest. Our Town has become known for exceptional festival celebrations, and American Fest is no different. On July 6th-8th, we’ll all gather at 34th & Laramie to celebrate the freedoms and all enjoy by virtue of being Americans. We’ll hear great music from Jim Peterik and The Ides of March, HiFi Superstar, The Meteors, and many other great musical acts. We’ll also have a special appearance by Chicago Blackhawks legends Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Tony Esposito, and Denis Savard, who will be signing autographs and taking pictures at the Bobby Hull Cicero Community Ice and Roller Rink. And then, of course, there’s the great food, the carnival games, the fun and exciting rides and much, much more. I look forward to seeing you out there!
